@petacavanagh That's how gun laws are. Not just any one can own a gun. Over 21 for concealable firearms. 18 for all others and you can not have any smudge on your record. If you've been convicted of a felony you can not own a gun. A full background check has to happen before you can even get the gun you are trying to buy. Even at gun conventions. This varies on state to state.

On top of that hunting is a large business here so gun laws are naturally balanced. Not every state has this luxury. Oregon is a good example of what to do with guns though. Very low gun crime rate here.

There are some other factors due to overall crime statistics in a given area but this is certainly true when taking a whole nation into account.

As for the machine guns (selective-fire weapons), they are only illegal if they were not registered with the United States Federal government before May 19, 1986 per the Hughes Amendment. Machine guns made after that date are legal under a few different circumstances. Like you said you need that license (I can only name two people in the US who have it - they do the machine gun shoots), and I think you can if you have the FFL.

Whether guns are legal or not, a criminal is always going to have access to one. If guns are outlawed, then a dangerous criminal won't have to think twice about robbing someone, or breaking into a house, or robbing a store, because they won't have the fear of being shot if they have a gun. But, because guns ARE legal, these people DO have to think twice about robbing a store,person, or house. I own a gun btw and plan on owning a small caliber handgun for SD. As for the machine guns (selective-fire weapons), they are only illegal if they were not registered with the United States Federal government before May 19, 1986 per the Hughes Amendment. Machine guns made after that date are legal under a few different circumstances. Like you said you need that license (I can only name two people in the US who have it - they do the machine gun shoots), and I think you can if you have the FFL.

A lot of people just own firearms because they can. they're very interesting pieces of machinery and can help save your life. @Breezyis7herealest No hating here, but why shoot to kill? That is what most people who own guns for self defense say they NEED to do. I own a gun btw and plan on owning a small caliber handgun for SD. But personally I would rather shoot a threat to my life in a manner that is non lethal, or has the least potential to kill, that would both save a life and stop the threat. Reasoning behind this is simple, I don't know what his motives are...just b/c he threatens me, don't mean he will shoot me.
