@DjangoDerDude I dunno. The Marvel Knights series has more black humor. Think of the Russian beating up Spider-Man or Punisher and Wolverine causing havoc in this South-American Neo-Nazi enclave.
@DrGull1888 Yeah, the Russian is great^^ but i just think the tone of the series just doesn't fit the punisher... it always seems like ennis is holding back... and i don't like dillon's style on this one, it's too happy^^ (altough i LOVE his work on preacher)
It's probably because i read the max titles first and expected the grittier stuff...
have you read his battlefields stuff? i think they're pretty great...
@DjangoDerDude Oh, that's unusual since when people think of Ennis they automatically think of his old collaborator Dillon. But it doesn't matter. Punisher Max is grimmer and darker in tone which is also okay. There are also some Punisher Max stories I like like his origin story in Vietnam or "Widowmaker" where those mafia widows try to take revenge on him.
@DrGull1888 my favourites are "the slavers" and "man of stone"... so good...
But i also like "Barracuda"... just because of the title character^^ I just read his little spin off mini series... it's hilarious^^ i love this character^^
@DjangoDerDude Barracuda is great. He reminds me of Herr Starr in Preacher, loosing limp after limp. I haven't read the spin-off yet but the next shopping frenzy might come soon. I don't have a deeper impression left from The Slavers. I know it's the one with the human trafficking. Time to reread it I guess. Man of Stone, well Zakharov is a great villain and the Russians in Afghanistan are bad-ass. Barracuda is bad-ass too. And fun.
@DjangoDerDude I read Battlefield Happy Valley. I find Ennis takes on World War II rather tiresome since he recycles the same clichés over and over again. There's the greenhorn, the guy who takes the greenhorn under his wings, the constantly swearing rest, Nazi fighter aces, bad ass Russians, foul mouthed Marines or Rangers, etc.
Nebenbei, wenn es Dir lieber ist, können wir auch Deutsch parlieren.
@DjangoDerDude Hast Du Dich an The Boys herangewagt?
@rang3r34 Thanks a lot for your compliments and for your subscription. But I beg to differ. Not everything Ennis has written during the last decade is that good.
@tayloroftheland I'm deeply ashamed to admit that I haven't read Wormwood. The Boys was okay until Herogasm, including Herogasm. Since then sex and violence have become repetitive while the plot hasn't made any progress.
hitman was his best book, punisher max is great but the marvel knights was more parodic than anything
but The Boys is trash. I liked the initial premise or a black ops CIA squad who's job it is to keep super heroes in line.I can buy that the world's biggest super hero team are a bunch of corrupt perverts who are essentially super villains with really good publicity. But every. Damn. Hero. Is like like that.
i mean come on garth we get it ! you hate religion! it' your opinion, do new stuff !
@DrGull1888 That would have been nice, though with what you chose this song was the wiser since ennis is so off the wall funny about his plot development. You should do a part 2 top ten list with crossed and Just a pilgrim.
@DrGull1888 That would be the new number 1 on the second top 10. Personally, I would list it as, 1-The boys, 2-crossed, 3-Punisher MAX collection, 4- Just a Pilgrim, 5-chronicles of Wormwood (ive never read it, actually, so I dont know where to rate it.), 6- Barracuda, 7-303, 8-Fury, 9-Streets of Glory, 10-Bloody Mary. THose titles but in different order though.
@Zamudiokid Also perhaps Rifle Brigade and Enemy Ace. But I find Ennis' approaches to WWII a bit naive. Not in the sense of brutality but in the sense of character development.
Have you read Ennis' Legend of the Dark Knight: Freak Out? Pretty bizarre. The villain is a flower power hippie.
@DrGull1888 i thumbed through a couple issues of the boys and herogasm, thats just taking it too far honestly. i dont know the story but its some sick shit imo. i dont wanna see swinging dicks in my comics.
@DrGull1888 yes it is. like preacher, i didnt mind the sex. i never mind the sex. herogasm and the boys is actually the first comic i have ever had a problem with in that regard
That was kinda fly. I liked how you provided a brief plot synopsis along with the titles. But man, I'm surprised that his work on The Demon Entrigan wasn't on the list. His run on that title was incredible and has to be experienced to be believed and is inexplicably over-looked even by his most devoted fans. Nice upload.
@dafullclip Thanks a lot for the compliments. I have held Ennis' Etrigan in my hands several times but never found it interesting enough to buy it. Perhaps I must reconsider this.
CROSSED hadn't mad the impact it has when this was posted in August of 2009. THE BOYS would be on my list, but I think your list includes a lot of the work I'd suspect that was close to Mr. Ennis's heart....particularly the inclusion of TRUE FAITH.
@Chuckqnit I chose comics I had a good time while reading them and I tried to vary a bit. I haven't read Crossed yet and when I made this list I hadn't read the Boys either. If this list included The Boys, they would be on number 3 or 4.
No punisher max?! Probably the greatest comic book ever created! Its almost like theres two versions of garth ennis. Theres the one that tells fantastically violent and hauntingly dark stories and theres the one that tries to be weird and shocking and out there while squeezing every last punch line he can into the script. I always prefer him when hes not trying to be funny or shocking, for me thats when he does his best work.
THE BOYS has lots of moments of awesome hilarity, but it's been rambling a bit for a while. I think maybe if the run had been cut down a bit it would be tighter and better.
I still think PREACHER is the pinnacle of graphic storytelling. That book is perfect, a true literary masterpiece.
The Boys has been a bit of a mixed bag thus far. I understand why it's not up here. Actually, "Son of Man" is my favorite of his Hellblazer stories. "Dangerous Habits" is certainly great itself, though. I kind of go back and forth between Hitman and Preacher for my favorite but it's Preacher's artwork that seals the deal.
To be honest, it isn't up there because I hadn't read The Boys when I made this video. Son of Man is a good one. I realy don't remember if I read a bad Hellblazer comic.
I think the punisher max series is way better then the marvel knights one...
