  • I was born and raised in dgo. -lived there for 20+yrs. -been on this train about a million times. as a kid me and my freinds would put pennys on the track, and after 478,427 and others flattened them, we would take them downtown and sell them to tourists for 10 bucks a pop-it worked! they would buy them!-dgo tourists beware of children with flattened coins!

  • what whistle is that???? the original d&ng one?

  • Now I just want a ride behind the great #478 next time I'm in Colorado. People say it's the best engine on the line, and man, great whistle.

  • Wow, how fast was it going at 1:30, that's pretty fast for a k-28.

  • Nice vid. I rode the train when it was still being run by the D&RGW before the private company took over.

  • Great video. Very painstakingly shot at all the points she passes. Its a better view than being on the train to see a steam locomotive from the sidelines.

  • That whistle gives me goose bumps just listening to it.

  • Really great sounds! Thanks for posting!

  • That is one huffnpuffin choogga chuggin hermufastuffin by god machine at work right there!!...thats all you can say about that :)

  • A magnificent video!

  • Cool. I remember riding this train back in the summer of 1969.

  • my kids are loving this!! we rode on that train a couple weeks ago. Loved it!!!

  • I love the DSNG and please people understand I am Not Insulting this Wonderfull operation but I wish they would do away with that damn awfull yellow color of those coaches and go back to the Pullman Green like on the old DRGW SanJuan I just think it would be alot more attractive and authentic looking than that Yellow

  • i agree with that. dark green like SP, Pullman, and DRGW used is awesome

  • @jimmyp42002 LOL thats cool I am glad someone else agrees on that I first saw this yellow as a kid I like it but the green is alot more authentic especilly for these old coaches I just returned from rideing an Everyday servive narrow gauge line in Germany it sort of reminded me of a cross between this and the Cass Scenic railway called the Harz Mountain Narrow Gauge big chunckey 2-10-2T engines for everyday service on that line we used a couple of special 0-4-4-0T than a 0-6-0T and one 2-10-2T

  • @gaycowboy31 Only a gay cowboy would complain about the color.

  • They should rename this video - the BEST STEAM TRAIN WHISTLE EVER!

  • 4:12

The epitome of an American steam locomotive whistle.

  • I absolutely love #478, it's a very stable and reliable locomotive with, in my opinion, the best whistle on the line and one of the best steam whistles that I have ever heard.

  • You know, her whistle sounds more like Sierra Railway #3's than any other engine I've heard, and I DON'T, repeat, DON'T say that about just any steam locomotive. #3 is my most favorite, and any similar sounding locomotive deserves a place as my next favorite. I'll pay more attention to this engine from now on.

  • @SierraRailway

Sierra Railway #3's whistle sounds more like D&S #486 in my opinion. Here's a video with #486's whistle.

    watch?v=_TCvJoQDRH0

  • Sorry, I don't hear it as much as I hear it on #478. Even #482 sounds similar. Go watch "chasing Sierra Ry. #3" by Carlbd2000. listen to the whistle after the first one at the beginning.

  • You are right, there is a hint of #478's and/or #482's voice in #3's. #3's sounds like it could match any of the D&S K-36 whistles. I think we can both agree that all of these whistles are beautiful nevertheless!

  • Indeed. Too bad the 3's original whistle in that video is in too bad of shape to be used anymore. We at Railtown 1897 are forging it though because everyone recognizes her whistle. I suggested that we do that, but they may have already talked about before me.

  • Very nice.

  • Nice video clip!

  • you gotta love steam engines

  • Ooooooh yeahhhh, gotta love them D&S whistles!

  • You bet!

  • 478 is my favorite engine. As for the K-37s, they are too big, and they derail more than the others. As for the whistles, 478 does have a beautiful 5-chime which was mounted on the 473 back in the 80s-90s. The 3-chime that's on the 473 now came off of the 476 which she wore in the 80s-90s. Honestly, 478 has the best whistle of all the engines, but 486 also has a beautiful whistle.

  • all trains leave out ouf durango

  • Does she leavefrom Durango starting out or Silverton??? Trying to decide where to stay..:0

  • This particular train and another that followed it departed Durango that day.

  • nice old K28 action this is the locomotive of my childhood memories a photo of me on the pilot of the engine in Silverton I am pleased to see this engine still doing what it was made to do

  • is that whistle a 3 chime?

  • D&RGW 5 chime, but one of them (480?)wears a 3chime.

  • no..its got to be a 3......it sounds just like the 844 steam locomotive..look it up..and listene.

  • Nope, its a 5-chime. It doesn't sound at all like 844... the 844 wears a Hancock 3 chime and it is at least an octave deeper than this whistle.

  • This is a D&RGW 5-chime, which was on the #473 for years. The 3-chime that used to be on the 8 is now on the 3.

  • I believe the 3-chime was also on the 6 in the 80s to early 90s.

  • This is actually a Rock Island 5 chime FYI

  • D&RGW. The D&S only had one foreign whistle in use that summer.

  • 480 had a 3 chime in the summer of 08 for the fun of it but 473 always has a 3 chime on her.

  • Nice footage!

  • Some Serious Action @ 3:43 she slipped a bit, and some real sweet audio too, thanks for the ride

  • gotta love those whistles realy cool

  • they should have had all the steam engines out on railfans day do their whistle salute

  • Holy cow. You almost feel like you are there.

    Great video! Thanks a heap!

  • Awesome Video, good area.

    Wonderfull steamtrain.

    I like this movie.

  • I saw 478 and 473, but it was the 78 that was running. I rode behind the 486 for the first leg to Silverton, and for the second leg I rode the 478 back to Durango. The 478 is a beautiful and a far more superior than the K-36s and K-37s.

  • Hey Chris I agree with you. 478 definitly has the it factor going for it lately. I remember when I visited Durango all the way back in 1989 she pulled the first out of the four trains the first day and then pulled the last train out the day after. I ended up riding behind 480, but I definitly think there is something very special about 478.

  • what happened to 476

  • unfortunaly the K-37 are verry rearly used (490 series for D&SNGRR) they got 2 in stock i am not shure thier condidtion bot in 07 when i worked there 1 was used for parts to get the other up to par doubt they will run the 37's they are almost too big for the line cant take the turs like the K36's

  • Yep! Been there before! Very good ride :-D

  • Ugh... they went back to the Circus lettering on 478... should have stayed with the RR Roman

  • Awesome Video!! Very senic up there!! I didn't ride on it but I got to see Silverton and the trains.

  • It's nice to see a good railfans perspective of the line, instead of some tourists video made with a cell phone camera.

  • WoW, you sure have gotton around lately! #478 was up around also when I went there. She was only in the round house though, I didn't catch her on the main. Only #481 and #82 were out and about.

  • I went on a railfan vacation recently. It's going to take several weeks to sort through the material and post the videos. Stay tuned, although no more steam video to post.

    I enjoyed your video response!

  • To bad, but this vid was/is awsome steam action at its best there. I will be on the lookout for more of your stuff!

  • Whoa!

  • Very cool Indeed! 5*****
