i dont see what the problem with just a simple electric make is, it does exactly what he does by pouring hot water of beans in a filter and letting them drip down
@Koolaiddewz Electric coffee makers are great, I like mine. This method just allows more control over the ingredients. He says in part one that he doesn't like the huge-over-the-top machines, standard coffee makers are fine.
@Koolaiddewz The problem is that many (most) home electric brewers don't heat the water as hot as it really needs to be. Sometime try holding a plastic canister under the brew head and put a thermometer in the water. This will let you determine the temperature of the water being dispersed over the grounds. More than a few times, I've seen expensive machines only heating the water to 160F... definitely not hot enough for proper extraction.
It was "fine" by him 9 years ago...Just like Marinating my steak was fine by me 9 years ago. I would go with the "burr grinder." He's found a better way.

@suckithardnfast Health problems, like me i love coffee. But the caffine in coffee actually causes me some pain (at least i think it's the caffine). Decaf coffee doesn't do that so i am forced to enjoy my coffee without much kick. Tiss sad i know...*sniff*
Blade grinders are not the way to go. They just chop the beans up, and not very consistently. Burr grinders consistently and uniformly grind the beans. When I switched from a blade to a burr, the flavor improved quite a lot. That's about the only thing in this vid I disagree on. The rest is all good. :)
I've got to disagree with using a $20 grinder. One of the most important things to making great coffee is consistent size of the grind, and you'll need a burr grinder for that.
@ottoi I have to disagree. The burr grinder is necesarry... for espresso. Not that drip coffee is 'substandard' in any way, but it's not as precise a process as espresso, and the resulting coffee, while good, isn't amazingly out of this world good (unless it's for the sole purpose of getting high on caffine :) But, as AB says in the espresso episode, the differance between burr ground and blade ground is microscopic, and thus, unless you're making espresso, really doesn't make a differance.
thank you thank you thank you! the first time i saw this was months ago but then i got into drinking coffee but i couldn't remember how to make it well-- then this was on tonight but i was talking on the phone so i thought "well, i guess it's a few more months of instant-- but no, you saved me! THANK YOU!!!! (although, judging from how excitable i am, maybe i should avoid caffeine)

Tch. Notice at around 3:55? Remember how Alton was stressing "Keep your beans in an *airtight* container?" He didn't seal the jar back up after spooning the beans out. Stayed open for the rest of the shot.
I also have the illusion of working better when I'm high all the time.

He says the blade grinder is "fine" for him, but in man food 2 he says they're worthless and he says to use a burr grinder. What gives, Alton?

Chuck is hilarious :)
I loved his expression when this happened:
AB: What do you think is the biggest favor you could do your beans?
Chuck: For fiends...
And
AB: Buy a bottle of champagne and ask the cashier to uncork it for ya, would you?
:)
Chuck: ...
