I think there's nothing wrong with Maggie's serves in the match. I also enjoyed her playing style, i.e., serve and attack, which is an ancient recipe for pen-holder players. Way to go!
@mensoyhotmail Her ball throwing hand is covering the bet right till almost the time of contact with the ball. She might be getting away with this because of the fact that she is throwing the ball real high up, so the referee thinks that the ball is clearly in plain sight for a long time, and overlooked the fact that her hand is covering the sight of the point of contact when the ball hit the bet, which is a violation under the new ITTF rule.
@caieros the serve looks legal to me. you can download the video using Real Player and play it in slow motion. she moves her hand before the contact, so it is in plain sight of the opponent.
@muntecy the new rule state that the blade and ball should remain visible to your opponent and the umpire from the moment the ball is thrown from the palm of the hand until the time of contact with the ball. Some umpires are more lenien than others. lots of the top chinese players kind of block the sight with their bodies and get away with it. What Maggie is doing is close to what they used to do by using the other hand to distract and conceal the blade angle, only not so obvious.
IMO, it's a stupid new rule anyways. Good TT players should be able to read the spin of the balls as it's coming towards them. Don't have to look at the angle of the blades touching the ball to know what kind of spin is on the ball.
@caieros The new service rule does not mention anything about covering the bat before contact. it has to be visible at contact, but not necessary before the contact.
2.6.4 From the start of service until it is struck, the ball shall be above the level of the playing surface and behind the server's end line, and it shall not be hidden from the receiver by any part of the body or clothing of the server or his doubles partner; as soon as the ball has been projected, the server's free arm shall be removed from the space between the server's body and the net.
