If Canalscape could be done, it would make areas near the canals much more desirable and sustainable. Phoenix, as currently configured, will be a very difficult place to live in the future if the peak oil theory is correct. What if the largely sedentary population could no longer afford to drive air-conditioned cars in the searing desert heat? Using canals as pedestrian corridors with lots of shade surrounding them could help alleviate a potential mass exodus out of Phoenix to cooler climes.
