Little can be said about the others. My comments are against MG. Ive been ripped off by them in the past and like my comment says , Do your reasearch on MG . Thanks for trying to advise me, I appreciate your time and expertese.
@rhythm013 If you boost it with an overdrive pedal, yes, but hiwatts weren't made for metal. They can do any genre, but for metal you could get a mesa for much cheaper than a hiwatt.
Here's one for you, all these vintage amp bores go on about the types of caps used and NOS valves and re-creating the old trannies, and a million different little things, but Marshall, vox, orange and hiwatt Etc were all designed with uk power in mind diffrent frequency and voltage, now if the type of caps and all that other shit makes such a big diffrence then surely the fact these amps are designed around 50Hz 220-240 V must make a big diffrence also, just a thought. nice playing btw.
And third , have you ever play a Hiwatt , or some British head live outdoors? This kind of amps are designed for bigger venues , not for little rooms !!!! go outside , or on bigger stage and you will see that attenuator just do not the job....
And attenuator is not good, first of all it damages your tubes, and more important amp reacts with the speakers on some volumes and produce healthy tone. with attenuator amp sound shrill , not like it was designed for. listen in this video at 2:45 when guy cranks Presence pot....
That's total bullshit, dude. You clearly don't know what you're talking about. Attenuators don't damage tube amps...cranking them to 10 and playing them for hours on end is what kills them and that's what people who use attenuators will unknowingly do sometimes unless they know better. The truth is that an attenuator represents nothing more than a load to your amp...much like a speaker and that's the whole point.
Also, there are attenuators out now that do a tremendous job of preserving the amps cranked tones a low volumes. The Ultimate Attenuator, the Aracom Power Rox, and the Faustine Phantom, to name just a few.
I am talking about tubes. attenuator ruin the tubes. go and educate yourself about tube amps. And second, SPEAKERS "sing" not the amp!!! if you put unnatural load between amp and speakers , they do not "sing" like they are designed to
Again, that's total bullshit, pal. Attenuators do not ruin tubes. You're the one who needs an education. It's the cranking of the amp to 10 that's gonna kill your tubes. Modern tubes just can't take that much power going through them like NOS tubes can. Second, of course, the speakers are not going to push air and break up like they would, but the cranked tone of the amp itself is there. You sound like a man who needs to try out some good attenuators.
Half stack or full stack it is made for you to choose depending on what venue are you playing and depends on what color of sound you want, which means that amp in full stack will work "harder" and sound will be more ballsy, and more open.you hear more mellow, not ears bleeding sound.less the speakers more shrill the sound is.thats because Pete T. use 6 boxes...
Listen , decibels do not have anything with blowing the speakers.OR 120 has about 120W but,it depends how you bias your power tubes.I have Hiwatt dr 103 from 1973 and Hiwatt has almost the same wattage , maybe a little more. Marshall 100w has less wattage than orange and hiwatt. And about 8 speakers in the same time , you are wright, but it does not mater because you should never turn the amp too loud, even if you play hardest rock.drummer is gonna kill you,and your ears are gonna bleed
50-200 watts doesn't necessarily yeild more decibals- its minimal. I'm not disagreeing w/ you totally, but you ARE taking chances on possibly blowing a speaker, which could blow an output or power tranny- which is something I personally would NOT take a chance on wth a vintage piece of equipment......but I do know what you're saying- I play small clubs- an attenuator can get you into the "tone zone" to push the power section of the amp and NOT kill the poeple in the back of the room. I dig it!
Ha ha- you ARE an idiot!! Yeah, go for the least common denominator right off the bat! It doesn't take much to blow these speakers- turning the amp all the way up doesn't necessarily yeild that much more db on the speakers anyway- you can still blow the hell out of a cab at low volumes w/ a 100w amp, especially when using only 1 cab- now who is the unintelligent cock sucker? You EVER see Pete T. use just one cab w/ a dr103? Didn't think so YOU UNIFORMED LICKER OF OTHER PEOPLES BOTTOMS!!!
How many times you see 4x12 cab in your life? and how many times you put your guitar cable in one of these amps? are you play guitar or something, or just watch amps on screen?
No, don't even know how many strings are on a guitar......what do you think??
I've played enough to know that its not that hard to blow speakers in a single 4x12 cab especially w/ a Hiwatt that says its 100 watts, but in reality they can be quite a bit more.
Until you've blown a vintage speaker or two, you might think its OK- I've blown a few speakers, so I know this from actual experience- My initial post was more in a joking manner- if you took it the wrong way, sorry! I've played 25+yrs
Listen , fanes are 30w if I remember correctly... like celestion g12h30 , I play 1974 Orange with original cab about 6 years on stage, and most of the times just with that one cabinet. and never blow the speakers. if you turn the hiwatt dr103 that much to blow your speakers , you probably would destroy your ears , except if you are on stadium of something.... two boxes is good for beefier or warmer sound, and more open sound.
Is it an OR80 or OR120? Those were one of the few amps that were actually over-rated as far as power goes- you can get away with it with one of them. Marshalls and Hiwatts are a little different- you ever owned one of either? Fanes can be anywhere from 20-50 watts, but the amps are so powerful, its easy to blow them up in a single 4x12 config- when you use 2 4x12's it disippates the wattage into 8 speakers so each speaker sees less wattage, thus you're less prone ot blow them up
I have one of these rigs, and I can say they kick ass! But you have to crank them to get any dirt or run a pedal through. I use an MXR Dyna Comp and a Big Muff PI.
Townsend used Hiwatt DR-103W (Customs with The Who faceplate-Treble and Mids wired together on one knob-Only input 1 active-Vol. at 7 and Gain dimed) with a hand made Dallas Arbiter distortion box for solos.
Man, this amp sounds AMAZING!!!!! Can you say, TONE TONE TONE?!? haha
I'm playing through a "Sovtek Mig 100" which sounds pretty damn good for the money (they run about $500.)! Btw, I had it modded to keep it clean at high volumes...But it's def not a Hiwatt!!!! LOL!
I'm thinking about getting a "Reeves Custom 100" & a "Reeves" 4x12 cab w/ "Vintage Purples," or, an used "Hiwatt DR103?" That's if I can find one that's in decent shape for a fair price?! haha

you know what? you won. you won the biggest asshole of the month. how does that feel? and you know what else your'e pathetic for having that long of an argument on youtube. dont even reply because im not going to even read your arrogant ass reply.
Yes, but proportionally to one another, they aren't that far off. If there were 300 million people in the UK, with the same percentage of overweight people, there would be 75 million obese/overweight. You failed to mention that although America has a huge percentage of overweight, the UK is tied for second with Mexico. Also, in fairness to both sides of the argument, if a person is even 1 lb or .45 kg overweight, they are thrown in to the statistic, for me and many, I could burn 1 lb in 2 days.
Outside of Detroit or LA, NY and Las Vegas are the two scuzziest cities in America. One if very, very large (about a third of the population of the UK) and destined for crime, the other is a city destined for gambling and legal prostitution, what did you expect? Most Americans look down on Vegas, btw. I personally think that British assholes like you are bitter about the USA being the wealthiest, most powerful country in the world, don't even try to argue that it isn't because it clearly is.
Haha, idk where you got your stats, but, according to statistics released by the US government, about 55 percent of adults are overweight or obese, and about 30 percent of adults are obese. Also, according to stats from the UK government, the percentage of overweight or obese adults in the UK is about 50%, and the percentage of obese adults is around 24-25%, not too far off... I found these stats on a BRITISH website, which I will show you if you'd like. I think you are jealous of America.
and why the fuck are brits arguing with yanks on here..do it somewhere else! the revolutionary war was 300 fucking years ago dick heads! get over it lol
Why must you attack my country? You think that all Americans are a bunch of fat idiots?! Have you even been to American outside of New York, Boston or LA? I'm not fat, and my IQ is 135, so I am not a 'fat idiot'! You don't know what you're talking about. That is equivelent to me saying that all Brits are a bunch of tea-drinking,cricket playing, arrogant pricks who think they are better than everyone else. That is a common stereotype in the USA btw, although I know for a fact that it isn't true!
Haha, of course the English invented the language dumb shit, you must be stupid to think I didn't think that. Also, the Brits didn't 'MAKE' the language, rather it is an evolution of Latin, so the Romans 'MADE' the language, asshole. However, you can't possibly attribute British slang as being 'the original language'. A 'mum' is short for a Chrysanthemum, a flower. And most of the English speaking world refers to their mothers as 'mom' and not 'mum'. Get over yourself wanker.
great job bro, look it up. compared to your small minority of english speakers in the UK, most people call their mothers 'mom' and there IS a specific flower called a mum. Haha you are the dumb one here.
ya and thats with the hot plate making it all fizzy. If it didn't have the hot plate it would be much more crisp sounding...oh and that guys ears would be bleeding.
Not really. We're used to playing at volume, but you'll notice we put a Hotplate attenuator in between the head and the cab so we could crank the amp for distortion yet not go deaf.
Cool, I have 2 heads & 3 cabs. I had the heads wired to drive the pre-amp tubes back in the mid 70's, I'll never part with them. Ya know they only made about 40 a month.
Cool vid! I really like the different sounds you can get with the four inputs on the amp. None of my amps that I had can't even compare to this amp lol. I really want to get a (used) halfstack one like this.
hey man dont even sell it man please make a band man will be great belive me i wish i had that amp if i was you i have a line 6 15 watts with a behringer 4x12 of 400 wats and i love it but man i love hiwatt more i allways anted one
Hi, I really want this amp but im worried that itmight be too much? Im playing mostly in small and medium size venues for a Pink Floyd tribute band and need an amp head with tons of clean headroom. I don't need OD from the head. I will use pedals for that. Do you think this amp will work in my case? Better than the custom 50?
I do the same thing - use pedals for my OD/distortion!
A super clean amp w/ lots of headroom is the only way 2 go, IMHO! For one thing you can use a few different pedals and get huge variety of OD/distortions! Right now I'm playing through a "Sovtek Mig 100" (modded for more clean HR) w/ a" Boss BD-2 Blues driver" (Keeley mod - altho I like the stock version as well), an "Option 5 OD 2" and for the real heavy stuff I use a "Boss MT-2 Metal Zone." They all sound gr8 thru the Mig 100!
Love every partridge amp :) Kickass HIWATT !

One if very, very large (about a third of the population of the UK) and destined for crime, the other is a city destined for gambling and legal prostitution, what did you expect? Most Americans look down on Vegas, btw. I personally think that British assholes like you are bitter about the USA being the wealthiest, most powerful country in the world, don't even try to argue that it isn't because it clearly is.
blahman178 3 years ago
prostitution is illegal in Las Vegas, you have to get outside the county
mojavecat 3 years ago
Haha, idk where you got your stats, but, according to statistics released by the US government, about 55 percent of adults are overweight or obese, and about 30 percent of adults are obese. Also, according to stats from the UK government, the percentage of overweight or obese adults in the UK is about 50%, and the percentage of obese adults is around 24-25%, not too far off... I found these stats on a BRITISH website, which I will show you if you'd like. I think you are jealous of America.

and why the fuck are brits arguing with yanks on here..do it somewhere else! the revolutionary war was 300 fucking years ago dick heads! get over it lol
petetownshendjr 3 years ago
ah yes! ofcourse you make a HIWATT demo video playing "live at leeds" licks! the best live album of all time and the very album that changed my life!
petetownshendjr 3 years ago
Why must you attack my country? You think that all Americans are a bunch of fat idiots?! Have you even been to American outside of New York, Boston or LA? I'm not fat, and my IQ is 135, so I am not a 'fat idiot'! You don't know what you're talking about. That is equivelent to me saying that all Brits are a bunch of tea-drinking,cricket playing, arrogant pricks who think they are better than everyone else. That is a common stereotype in the USA btw, although I know for a fact that it isn't true!
blahman178 3 years ago
Haha, of course the English invented the language dumb shit, you must be stupid to think I didn't think that. Also, the Brits didn't 'MAKE' the language, rather it is an evolution of Latin, so the Romans 'MADE' the language, asshole. However, you can't possibly attribute British slang as being 'the original language'. A 'mum' is short for a Chrysanthemum, a flower. And most of the English speaking world refers to their mothers as 'mom' and not 'mum'. Get over yourself wanker.
blahman178 3 years ago
great job bro, look it up. compared to your small minority of english speakers in the UK, most people call their mothers 'mom' and there IS a specific flower called a mum. Haha you are the dumb one here.
blahman178 3 years ago
You stupid fuck, in the rest of the world, a 'mum' is a flower, so if you'd like to come and fuck the flowers in my garden come here and do it.
blahman178 3 years ago
Umm ok asshole, if you'd fly 3000 miles to do so. Haha you are stupid?
blahman178 3 years ago
OK, say that, ashole. They sound awesome, just not worth the price.
blahman178 3 years ago
anyone else find these a bit like vox ac30's but with a tighter sound/overdrive?
orchidwulf 3 years ago
Hey! Quick question; are the new DR103's just as good as the older ones?
Theogibsonfreak 3 years ago
you wanna talk about overrated, plexi is on top of that list sir.
netmdfreek2004 3 years ago 4
I agree that modern ones are, but have you played an original one? Hiwatts are awesome, but they are too pricy.
blahman178 3 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Those amps are sooo overrated. I like classic plexis
blahman178 3 years ago

Bohn2 3 years ago

Good stuff. I have my original '72 Custom 100. Never let me down.
iconosphereuk 3 years ago
Cool, $3,200 for sale I would say it worths every dime of it. Have you tried the Weber Mass attenuator? It is not as bright as the THD.
yputup 4 years ago
I'm told that the Ultimate Attenuator is the most transparent of them all.
JohnnyJohnnyJohnny 3 years ago
did you turn up high in order to get that natural distortion. Did your ears hurt?
yputup 4 years ago
Not really. We're used to playing at volume, but you'll notice we put a Hotplate attenuator in between the head and the cab so we could crank the amp for distortion yet not go deaf.

I have 2 Lead 30 Combos and an original VOX AC30. This is my dream amp to finfish my collection. Very nice.
zoltar5282 4 years ago
Cool, I have 2 heads & 3 cabs. I had the heads wired to drive the pre-amp tubes back in the mid 70's, I'll never part with them. Ya know they only made about 40 a month.
CatfishLemonjellySwa 4 years ago
Cool vid! I really like the different sounds you can get with the four inputs on the amp. None of my amps that I had can't even compare to this amp lol. I really want to get a (used) halfstack one like this.

PCGAMERTURBO 4 years ago
The 400w rating on the cab is the handling capacity of it.
EveryMn 4 years ago
My only problem with that this amp is that it isn't mine
IXIBobOhIXI 4 years ago
now THIS is how you sell an amp!!
mikepage 5 years ago
Hi, I really want this amp but im worried that itmight be too much? Im playing mostly in small and medium size venues for a Pink Floyd tribute band and need an amp head with tons of clean headroom. I don't need OD from the head. I will use pedals for that. Do you think this amp will work in my case? Better than the custom 50?
bchamorro 5 years ago
I personal try both of this amp, and the rare 200w head, I use myself a 1977 custom 50 head and I prefere 50 w head...
Its just my own opinion, Hiwatt are so good !
ACjanusDC 5 years ago
They sound break up faaster...
EveryMn 4 years ago
