I have a APS BOV on my '04 STi. The piston was sticking so I rebuilt it myself. After the rebuild.. my turbo started fluttering which meant my BOV was opening too late (spring pressure too high for the amount of psi I'm pushing). I loosened the adjustment nut and flutter issue solved. Any fluttering noise is always a bad idea.. either under accel or decel since flutter is caused by disturbance of air. I'd like my turbos to have smooth airflow under any circumstances.
And I thought they were supposed to sound like the car in the beginning... My 300zx sounds like the car at the end of the video. I kinda like the sound in the beginning though.
@z31man it sounds bad ass, yes, but still is bad for your turbo. IDK some people don't run any bov and say it works fine, other parts will fail first. but hey my bearings can be replaced, rather than whole turbo.

This can slow down your turbo between shifts, the closer you can get to a vaccuum between shifts, the higher the turbo rpm when you open the throttle
The fluttering is caused by the sudden closing of the throttle, Air is traveling from the throttle butterfly to the turbo back and forth very fast. That is a flutter. A turbo don't cause flutter. Also that fluttering your hearing can cause you turbo to stall, Also putting very strong load on your in turbo bearing causing long term damage. The reason your having flutter is cause your BOV spring is too tight.

@tibbracing1 Bullshit iv been a mechanic for 11 years and i know surge when i hear it. This is amplified surge noise and and as thats a wrx they come stock with a DV (Dump Valve). DV's are used for the track as it eliminates most compressor surge ,therefore keeping the turbine rpm alot higher on shifts. You may know of it as a silly BOV that makes funny noises. Clearly the DV has been removed for a BOV(Sound) ,i see this done by many young lads. Serious BOV and dose is all for show ,DV is for go

Thats the same i have on my nissan 200sx, it flutters a little before the dump opens, most likely because his dump is on the air intake side and not on the turbo side..
so the preasured air will go back into the system for a sec before it reaches the dump on the other side

Some try to run too strong a spring in the setup. And they never figure this out until the shaft goes in two directions SNAP. Large spool turbines can handle this but the smaller ones suffer immensely. OH and by the way don't do this again even for a how to. This can sometimes crush the veins in the inter-cooler, if it has the cross pass veins like mine. Even a inlet line blow off can crush em. Inlet to inter-cooler under boost, usually at high end.

throttle butter fly closes in fact wich blocks the boost, and the flutter is nuthing more than the piston in the BOV opening and closing real quik as the air is regulating out.
omg wen the engine revs up and spins the turbo its creating boost goin thru the valves but when u decelerate, the engine speed drops (valve opening speed) and the turbo "still spinning" builds to much presure in the intake and needs to be released via the blow of valve (valve pressure relese)

@noobskater15 Turbo spool is the high pitch whistle before the BOV piston opens or the turbo flutters, Basically the turbo spinning up to create boost.
@fifteenYear Wastegates dump exhaust which in turn reduces boost. In this case the turbo has already spooled and has positive pressure on the intake manifold so when the throttle snaps shut the pressure is escaping backwards past the compressor and back into the air box/filter rather than escaping from the BOV like it should.
@s04r3r ur a fuckin retard dont post on wat u dont know...wastegates dont dump exhaust (thats why the fuckin TURBO is hooked up to the exhaust) its a spring/diaphragm that dumps the excessive BOOST thats HIGHER then wat its set at. Secondly the boost between the closed throttle plate/plates get let off by the WASTEGATE cause you have no air flow into the engine so now your pressure is higher then the spring rating in the wastegate housing which forces the diaphram open till the excess dumps off
Youve got it all wrong. Wastegate and blow off valve are different things.
Waste gate is between exhaust piping and turbine, blowoff valve is between compressor and intake piping.
Throttle opens and the intake manifold pressure drops so the wastegate directs more exhaust flow through the turbine to raise the manifold pressure.
All the blowoff valve does is get rid of of excess pressure in the inlet manifold before the wastegate reopens when you take your foot off the throttle.

I have a turbocharged car running 6-9psi with an appexi bov and i once replicated this sound by messing with the screw on top of the bov. By tightening the screw, it got to a point where the valve was barely opening and causing this sound. Once i backed it off, the valve went back to normal. Just some food for thought!

Some try to run too strong a spring in the setup. And they never figure this out until the shaft goes in two directions SNAP. Large spool turbines can handle this but the smaller ones suffer immensely. OH and by the way don't do this again even for a how to. This can sometimes crush the veins in the inter-cooler, if it has the cross pass veins like mine. Even a inlet line blow off can crush em. Inlet to inter-cooler under boost, usually at high end.

omg wen the engine revs up and spins the turbo its creating boost goin thru the valves but when u decelerate, the engine speed drops (valve opening speed) and the turbo "still spinning" builds to much presure in the intake and needs to be released via the blow of valve (valve pressure relese)

@fifteenYear Wastegates dump exhaust which in turn reduces boost. In this case the turbo has already spooled and has positive pressure on the intake manifold so when the throttle snaps shut the pressure is escaping backwards past the compressor and back into the air box/filter rather than escaping from the BOV like it should.

@s04r3r ur a fuckin retard dont post on wat u dont know...wastegates dont dump exhaust (thats why the fuckin TURBO is hooked up to the exhaust) its a spring/diaphragm that dumps the excessive BOOST thats HIGHER then wat its set at. Secondly the boost between the closed throttle plate/plates get let off by the WASTEGATE cause you have no air flow into the engine so now your pressure is higher then the spring rating in the wastegate housing which forces the diaphram open till the excess dumps off

Youve got it all wrong. Wastegate and blow off valve are different things.
Waste gate is between exhaust piping and turbine, blowoff valve is between compressor and intake piping.
Throttle opens and the intake manifold pressure drops so the wastegate directs more exhaust flow through the turbine to raise the manifold pressure.
All the blowoff valve does is get rid of of excess pressure in the inlet manifold before the wastegate reopens when you take your foot off the throttle.

I have a turbocharged car running 6-9psi with an appexi bov and i once replicated this sound by messing with the screw on top of the bov. By tightening the screw, it got to a point where the valve was barely opening and causing this sound. Once i backed it off, the valve went back to normal. Just some food for thought!
