At one time, VHF/UHF waves caused a disturbance in the natural Quantum Flux nullifiers. This was when the earths rotation caused the Northern Hemisphere to be directly aligned with the constellation of Leo. If left on after 1:00 AM, the result of those waves would have been apocalyptic.
Wow...never knew that about TV waves causing any type of disturbance overhead after 1AM! (Back then, not now) I always thought that TV stations went off-air due to not having anything else they wanted to air. (Of course, that's not a problem anymore...even PBS is 24/7/365.25 LOL)
WPTF was one of the worst NBC affiliates ever. They pre-empted so much programming, and then rectified the low ratings with more pre-empting. Anyone wonder why they're stuck with MyTV now?
LOL! Sinclair has a duopoly in the Triangle, they own WLFL (CW22) and WRDC "My28" (which sounds less tacky than "MyRDC", which is actually what they call themselves).
They were actually a little less crappy about preemptions than WXII in the Triad where I grew up. I remember I had to struggle to get 28 (or 10 from Roanoke VA) in Greensboro to watch an NBC show or so that WXII opted out of showing. But yes, 28 did have many complaints about its operations. WNCN (17) is NBC O&O and is definitely a better affiliate for the Triangle now.
WRDU/WPTF/WRDC was the full-time NBC affiliate from 1971-1995. However, the station did not fully take advantage of the fact that there was a now a full-time NBC affiliate in the Triangle. As you said, they pre-empted a good amount of programming, which NBC did not like at all. And so, in 1995, they signed an affiliation deal with Outlet, moving NBC to WNCN, which would be an NBC O&O from 1996-2006.
Meanwhile, WRDC affiliated with UPN, which would have ended up on WLFL, but rather than changing WLFL from FOX to UPN, their owners, Paramount Stations Group, sold WLFL to Sinclair in the Spring of 1994. (Sinclair returned the favor by selling KOVR, Sacramento's CBS affiliate, to PSG's successor, the Viacom Television Stations Group, in 2005).
To this day, it is not known why PSG sold WLFL rather than making it a UPN station.
WRDC, as a UPN affiliate, did not have as much programming to preempt, as UPN programmed for far less time than NBC. Meanwhile, WNCN, which had been a WB affiliate from 1/95 (before that independent), gave some of its syndicated shows to WRDC (others went to new WB affiliate WRAZ, now a FOX affiliate).
I also remember KSNW in Wichita,KS and it's satellite stations used the same SSB to sign off in the 80's, then somewhere around the late 80's/early 90's they used a different SSB to sign off. Also KOKI-TV in Tulsa,OK used that SSB to sign on and different one to sign off.
Does anyone else remember this station's mascot, Petey F. Peacock (as in "PTF peacock")? He was a big, smiling NBC peacock (6 feathers). I wonder what happened to the costume.
This is so cool. Thanks for putting this up. TV28 was a lot nicer place to work in before it was sold and became WRDC. I can't place the voice-over. Someone from then-sister station WQDR-FM? Is it Mitchell Lewis. I think this was before he started working there...
i freakin love this! does this happen anymore?

obviously because the owners do now know how to operate a decent station like the original owners...

Oh, no way. They're owned by Sinclair now. That's worse.

I think KDLH and KBJR aired that same National Anthem film back in early 1980's.

I recognize this SSB! in the 1980's KDLH and KBJR used this on its sign-on and sign-off.

An airforce jet in the skies over America? Too bad Bush didn't think of that on 9/11.
vestalallen 5 years ago
I'm afraid that particular jet wouldn't have done anyone any good. That's a Northrop Grumman T-38 Talon, an unarmed supersonic training aircraft.
