@NovaScotiaChick Damn true... It's been shot using a cheap phone (or a regular 2007 phone, which is about the same thing). A simple photo camera would have got better output...
So sorry that the majority of listeners don't have access to Tim Buckley's album. I grew up with his soaring, heart-felt voice singing this song (the sound on YouTube is past-horrible now--nothing even remotely like the original).
I've listened to most of the suggested new
versions that the posters recommend here--most are just "OK" compared to Buckley. The Israeli singer does rate a B+, though he can't hit those high soaring notes like Tim did--none of those I listened to could.
only one singer matches the sensitivity of the original, in his inimitable and unique way -Robert Plant. I think it would be impossible to surpass Buckley's version, but Plant easily equals it, and offers us a heart piercing interpretation that ratchets up the emotional essence of the song several clicks.
To cover a song like this, you have to be very self-assured. John Frusciante did an amazing job of this. Oh, I see there were already many people who said that. But just check it out.
I heard a duet recorded by lovers Elizabeth Frazer and Jeff Buckley, Tim's son, and my idol. So I started reasearching Liz Frazer. What a sweet trail it was to follow to land here. Rediscovering Elizabeth Frazer was in the Cocteau twins (she also sang Massive Attacks beautiful "teardrop"). They had did this beautiful Song to the Siren. And who was it written by? Her lover Jeff's father. Beautiful sweet voyage of rediscovery and reminiscing.
The first version I knew about was This Mortal´s ..then I put the name of the song on google, and there were other artists, and that´s how I discovered Tim.... It´s the BEST version of the song, ever! He turned into one of my favourit artists since then... Also love Cocteau.. s;)
i actually heard the frusciante version first, and loved it so much that if figured i should give the original a try...not disappointed. this song is so beautiful from the first note to the last.
I sold my Starsailor CD on eBay a few years ago and regretted it ever since. Last week I found the original 1970 LP pressing at a Half Price Bookstore and bought it for a mere $10.
Don't be ridiculous - the noise wasn't there when TB actually recorded the song - this is just the drawback of vinyl...you dont actually here faithfully what was recorded. As I said..the CD must be a better listen. Move on...join the 21st Century!
Hmm...all I can say about this version is eww. I fell in love with this song as covered by This Mortal Coil, thinking at the time that it was one of their originals. After hearing this wasn't true I looked for this version, as being the original. I'm afraid I just don't like it. Thanks just the same for posting it, so I now know what it sounds like.
I knew the This Mortal Coil version but I never heard the original version until now. It surprises me that TMC pretty much kept the original melody intact (as the TMC song sounded like an improvisation with a much tighter song as its jumping off point).
Tim has been my beacon of spirituality ever since I first unwrapped Goodbye and Hello back in the late 60's. He has never let me down in my struggle to find my way and his light shines as bright for me today as it did the day I first met him. So much from someone in so little time. Tim left me with wealth beyond what any amount of money can buy. So sadly missed but so lucky for what he gave to me. Once, I was too.
I have Tim Buckley singing this live on "The Old Grey Whistle Test" on tape. When I get my equipment updated I will load it here and sod Third Music whoever they are.
bring back the monkees show version you tube nazi's!!! Is anyone really out there snatching up tim buckley songs to sell on the internet? i dont think so!- this guy is the most obscure musician ever- copyright? you guys are crazy- this isnt worth anything to anyone-
This is a beautiful song, but the quality of the clip is not. It does not do Tim's haunting brilliance justice. There are much better versions.

Starsailor is a great album, very different from the rest of the Tim's production, but so innovative and so pure.
Great song from one of the best singers in the musical history

@kiwiclogger, Plant still does not beat the prototype. I am speechless at how beautiful it is.

yes, Frusciante's version is the most intense, heart rending, emotional incredible version ever. Buckley would be happy with it, no doubt.
