  • bewildering complex mosaic of music styles, never heard anything like it! It shouldn't work but it does! Breaks all the rules, but quite ingenious & brilliant imo.

  • i had this album when it was first released,,cutting edge for sure!! like a cross between fusion, and new-age!!

  • My god. I can't get this song out of my head. I need to buy this album.

Who ever said Youtube was bad for record sales?

  • @stripedhyenuh Clearly a dickhead in a suit.

  • 4 people was not proclamated !!!

  • This song is black magic.... <3

  • This is a pretty groovy song. I approve.

  • or deaf

  • none so blind !!!

    totally unique 40 years on.

  • For some reason, I find this band more accessible than Van der Graaf Generator (most people would think otherwise).

  • Best listened to in a good set of headphones

  • No groove? Rather, it is the Greatest. Dance. Tune. EVER!!!!! :-D

  • My favorite Gentle Giant song

  • @traumlicht11 It's Mine too, this song kick's ass in so many levels.

  • what the hell is this?

  • @baldingmoose Its the greatest band ever

  • I read that Sherman Hemsley did an interpretive dance to this on the Dinah Shore Show. Somebody please track that footage down!!!

  • @grecomic I think probably the only way we will ever be able see it is if anybody could somehow contact sherman and see if he has a copy of that particular show.I looked on amazon and did not find any dinah shore shows on dvd fom that time period.I also googled sherman hemsley on the dinah shore show and found nothing.I hope somehow this classic footage is found one day.It would be absolutely hysterical to see.

  • "count" me in on the Dracula bashing....no groove? You must be groove deaf. Keyboardist Kerry Minnear received a classical music education at the Royal Academy of Music, with a degree in composition, methinks he knows a thing or two about composition and groove.

  • Dream Theater brought me here :)

  • @bozzioisgod44 Gentle Giant brought me here :)

  • Ladies and Gentlemen, THIS is Gentle Giant, the best experimental progressive band that EVER played on earth..

  • What do you get when you mix incredible talent with fantastic composition and insane grooves. Gentle Giant

  • @jakdracula Oh dear, another product of the Simon Cowell X-factor generation. Fair enough if you don't like the tune, but your comment implies music always has to be sung perfectly to be any good. And to say this track has no groove undermines any opinion you have anyway. Maybe type 'Phil Collins' next time.

  • @jakdracula Hey dracula, your comment is one of the most pathetic things i have ever read. The singing is fucking great. He is singing in tune and it has a wicked funky groove.Do all of us gentle giant fans a favor and go back to your coffin and close the lid and never come out again.

  • @jakdracula I giggled

  • @jakdracula This grooves pretty hard. And in reference to the singing being out of tune, you're probably referring to the climax at 3:21. It's not out of tune. They are a series of augmented tonalities that are quite dissonant. But not out of tune. The dissonance is to provide tension ot the otherwise relaxed Dorian/Lydian groove.

  • @bootleggersupply Music theory FTW.

  • @jakdracula Out of Key and no groove?? I suggest you sit down with whatever instrument you play, figure out what key this song is in first, learn the vocal melody lines, and test to see if it's out of key. You'll find it's not. As for no groove, Lady Gaga's back up dancers would have a fun time with this song, as it's mostly in a simple 4/4 timing and the drums are mostly kept simple. It's obvious you didn't like the song, but there is nothing wrong with the song either.

  • @LordArithon Haha there you say something. "Mostly in 4/4"

Someone with no musical understanding will think the drummer is failing when he does something else than just 4/4 or 3/4

  • I still remember the first time I heard this. it first time I listened to Gentle Giant. ".... wut"

I wasn't ready. still blows my mind.

  • this is one of the most better sons I hear in my life!!

  • 4:35 - 6:49

  • The bass line is awesome!

  • I cant tell if this is genius, or fucking retarded......

  • Gentle Giant is insane. It's as if they're cramming five albums worth of material into 6 minutes. It's just insane - and amazing.

  • This music was made by drugs alucinations.

  • @caeatl Learn how to spell "hallucinations" before you blame musical genius on recreational drug use. Thanks. :)

  • DAMN YOU MADLIB. stop sampling them, hahaha this band is amazing

  • For all that it may be it sounds dismal.

  • @Tonerows Well you do have a point. But you don't have to know the name of the root to know a notes relationship to the root. And if the half-whole (or whole-half) is part of a moving line then i guess it doesn't effect the harmonic structure as much as it would if it were part of a chord.

  • @Tonerows To be a know it all. Half-Whole, and Whole-half are not similar enough to "have a pick."

  • Extraordinarios. Mágicos...

  • @Tonerows Yeah !

  • 14/10 - Amazing

  • HAIL!

  • the live version is way better

  • when I listen to this song I imagine that king breakdancing

  • i wish the end of the song never ends

  • i like the whole tone scale at 3.21, really the opposite of mainstream, nothing you would hear from modern pop or hip hop artists :D

  • Hey, I heard Sherman hemsley loves this group

  • @TheMidnightBell07 A friend of mine told me he saw sherman on the dinah shore show. When he was introduced this song was playing in the backround and he started dancing to it.After he stopped dancing, dinah asked sherman "what in the world was that all about" and sherman replied"that was gentle giant you gotta check these guys out" and began to rave about the band.If i only knew how to obtain a copy of that show it would be priceless.

  • when i was about 11 i stumbled upon my dads secret stash of cassette tapes among other treasures i found a gentle giant album i really cant remember which one...long story short gave it a listen and it blew my mind.

  • OK, yeah, I guess that's what I meant. They created their music without regard for commercial success. They didn't have to. They were geniuses and the band was pure genius.. Too bad disco came along when it did.

  • Carajo!!! Ya no hay música así!!! Esto no es moda, es cultura...

  • Dios mío, esta canción no la había escuchado hasta hace unas pocas semanas. Definitivamente ya es de mis favoritas :O no puedo dejar de escucharla !! :)

  • hearing the intro with in-ear earphone really gives me a headache but i dont care this shit is awesome

  • Immense. I wish i had seen them more than once

  • Mostruosi. Niente di meno, molto di piu'!!!

  • groovy!!!

  • I like this.

  • you guys dont unnerstand. Giant never wanted to be recognized.

  • @jamesnjawja Yes they did, that's stupid why would they not want to be recognised? They didn't mind if they weren't popular but they didn't specifically not want to be recognised

  • A truly excellent band that never got the recognition they were due.

  • Thank you so much x

  • Type PRIZE before youtube and hit enter

  • these guys are fantastic! What happened to them. Listen to their albums and enjoy!!

  • gorgeous stuff...amazing..

  • LOOTPACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • POWER TO BELIEVE AND POWER & THE GLORY : SO, POWER IS THE COMMON WORD FOR THE TWO TOP PROG BANDS OF ALL TIME : KING CRIMSON AND GENTLE GIANT. NO ONE HAS PLAYED SO COMPLEX THINGS LIKE THEM.. AFTER THEM, ELP AND YES ARE CLOSE ENOUGH... THIS MUSIC CAN ONLY BE LISTENED BY SPECIALS.. IT'S NOT AN "EASY LISTENING BULL SHIT STUFF".... SO, COMMON PEOPLE BEWARE...IT'S STRICTLY NOT ALLOWED FOR YOU..

  • @norsunny

    You ape.

  • @Carscallen no, I expert .. :)

  • @norsunny cmon man theres no need to yell, we know

  • @vsutlovic :-)

  • The live version may be just a bit better.

  • QUASIMOTO

  • @mallaes2006 did quasimoto sample this?

  • @cameron829sm No, but Madlib sampled it for Lootpack feat. Tha Alkoholiks and Defari - Likwit Fusion

  • incredible

  • I own this CD, along with four more by this group. I owned the Vinyls in the 70's but lost them. Great group. Different.

  • Don't ever stop dudes... I started listening to Genesis and Gentle Giant when I was 15 (in 1977) and I've never looked back. There a tons of prog bands out there to explore - even new ones... Google lasercd and znrcds. Good hunting!

  • @pmfith

Nice. Glad to see that you still are open to new bands out there. I'm 26, a composer and musician. We're all jaleous of you guys at one point or another in our lives, for living through this rock era... :P But the thing to learn is we have to be very open. The 70s are for everyone, from any generation. Music doesn't age, and musicians from every generation share the same heart and talent. Prog still lives and I'm glad you are not blocked with your 70s like some others are! :)

  • Hail to power and to glory's way!

  • whats with all the fags with their fucking whining? blug bluh bluh I'm "x" years old and I only listen to "x" how about giving other musicians a chance instead of being a faggot thinking your any different from other people around you,you can't avoid being labeled, and you would probably be labled as one of those hipsters who think they are any different from anyone else, these stupid comments are on every prog song I'm listening to ffs they are annoying as those "like if" comments..

  • you want Power and Glory?

(lemme catch my breath after singing along - phew)

that extraordinary section from 3:20 to 4:34 is one of the most powerful and glorious bits of playing, singing and composition ever unleashed on an unsuspecting "rock" audience ... when this album came out, I was playing in a fusion group delivering some pretty complex material, but when a friend interrupted rehearsal with this album, that rehearsal stopped - and we listened - then we just walked outside for a while

  • @DoctorPatient

I had a very similar introduction to GG, then later that same year and by chance, we (UK fusion band) met the guys from GG at the Yamaha warehouse one afternoon. They were very modest which is a rare thing in people so talented. I still can’t get enough of them.

  • @ianpearce2000 these guys are absolutely amazing, their music, philosophy, influence are incredible, elite band!

  • @DoctorPatient Such a tragic story and it needed to be said!

  • @DoctorPatient

''Rock'' music indeed, it is better described as classical music, nay, the very anthem of the rise of academic excellence within western civilkization, oh god I'm ejaculating tea right now

  • I get all this music from my dad. I am forever grateful to him for this mighty gift.

  • 17, almost 18. Been listening to Prog, and all types of music forever. All music genres are fantastic and have something to offer. Progressive is my favorite though.

  • only got this one in the live version...which is in my opinion even better! GG manage to sound live better than on cd, wtf....love them, a pearl for each soul on this planet! if only more ppl were openminded these days...

  • DAMN! I HAD 40 000 VIEWS IN LESS THAN A YEAR WITH THAT STUPID PENIS SONG I REMOVED AND THIS ONLY HAS 25 000 AFTER 22 MONTHS?!?!?!

    WHY? thats sad...

  • @plpicher

why?? this is a rhethoric question my friend :) answer: we live in a world of stupidy, ignorance and corruption. The stupid wins. The coward wins. Ignorance wins. But only pure hearted know :)

  • @ArmoniaLuminum i removed my video because of what you explained here

out of curiosity: whats your job?

  • @plpicher

Im a philosophy student :) still young :D

  • @ArmoniaLuminum Melting Euphoria is similar to Ozric Tentacles and Gong. Michael Tsarion is the worlds premier conspiracy researcher/lecturer/author. ARAMIS IS STILL THE COUNT OF MONTE CHRISTO(GENERAL OF THE JESUITS)

  • Playing the Fool!!!!!!!

  • i wish they had better productoin back then

  • @StickManga

    they had :)

  • first time i have heard their music. worked with an ex band member in the 80s and he didnt want to talk about it. i like them

  • All Hail Gentle Giant.

  • please could you tell me which are their best songs? i dont want to listen to entire albums... because I have to listen to every song like 10 times to like them (shitty ears) xD

  • hail

  • @dreamofshrooms hail.

    hail.

    hail.

    HAIL!

Hail to Power and to Glory's Way.

  • Acquiring the Taste is their heaviest rocking LP.

  • It's a good sign when teenagers start listening to bands like GG and other prog, forsaking the talentless, monorhythmic, autotuned music of today. It convinces the most jaded skeptics that real music will always be discovered and enjoyed by those who continue to look for it, instead of being satisfied with what the media calls 'music'.

  • This seems like something Jethro Tull would write.

  • @antagonist42 Jethro Tull wishes they were as complex as Gentle Giant. Just looked at the disaster they put out when they tried! (A Passion Play)

  • @Amebixfan Your speaking privileges have been revoked.

  • @antagonist42 Def not, nothing but truth in what I said. I think musically A Passion Play is pretty good, but just look at the reviews for it, its a complete catastrophe.

  • @Amebixfan And critics' opinions are the last word on musical talent?

  • @antagonist42 Never said anything about critics...at all. The album is bloated and pretty much unoriginal, prove me wrong....

  • @Amebixfan And holy crap, everything that's unoriginal is sure to be awful!

The millions of fans worldwide Beatles fans seem to disagree, yet what did they do? Thy played ten chords and wrote about love.

Led Zeppelin, too. All they did was mix two genres together and now they're a vital addition to any "classic rock" collection.

Please put an end to your condescending, "I'm better than you because my music is more technical" attitude and open your eyes to the rest of the world.

  • @Amebixfan this is indeed the truth....but listen to albums like "thick as a brick " or "too old to rock 'n roll too young to die" ....both are complex yet wonderful to listen to

  • @HerrJohannessohn Thick as a Brick is amazing and essential, but it really isn't complex at all, I think its very, very simple. It just has a lot of passages to it.

  • This song's got oomph. A very good thing. :D

  • If you look up the word Syncopation, Gentle Giant's picture should be in the definition..!!!

These guys played like Raging Maniacs... and I love it..!!

  • I think this band is very under rated.....such great composing and lyrics

  • Pure pop-prog at its best...Gentle Giant was a very underrated band in progressive circles and unjustly so....

  • Fantastic! Inimitable! Great Gentle Giant!!! Congratultions for these very young people who listen to GG and other good bands. They definitely are different than the standard kids around. Read their statements below.

  • ILOVE IT

  • 15 here. got into rush when i was 14 and clicking on link after link into different prog bands of the underground i have now a huge library of bands like focus, rush, camel, and gentle giant. I got prog friends though so its all good :D

  • @PeeceSells Im about to be 15 too xD. Yes, those bands rules!

I love Megadeth too =) I saw them when they came to Argentina in April... it was awesome!

Have you heard Genesis, Van der graff generator, ELP, Dream Theater (progresive metal) King Crimson, or Jethro Tull?

  • @jcast18k yep all of em..havent heard much of any cept DT though

  • @jcast18k Yes. I own albums and MP3 files from all bands except Dream Theater.

  • I'm 3 years old and I looooove prog

  • genial la rola!!

  • Prog rock is not only a 70s fenomenon. Bands like Spock's Beard, Flower Kings, Transatlantic, The Tangent, Magic Pie, Beardfish, IQ, Pendragon ... all very good.

And there's even a new wave of young band coming ...

Over 50 and still excited about new good music :-)

  • @Topographer most of the bands you mention may fit into the prog category, but will never be as free and unpredictable as GG. True progressive rock has very few barriers. i know for a fact IQ struggle to be musically free. So restricted by their abilities, or lack of.

  • @mensamoo As long as I like to listen to the music, I don't care if they are 'progressive' in the true sense of the word. I know IQ, Pendragon, Arena etc are a bit too similar to the 70s prog bands, but I also like to listen to bands that are 'a bit like The Beatles' f.i.

  • 1:23 omg

  • Of course there are. I'm referring mainly to modern popular music.

  • The funkiest prog band ever.

End the harmony singing at 3:30 is insane.

  • @Topographer Yes, and I think that contributes to their timeless sound.

  • genial

  • PROG 4 LIFE

  • la mejor banda y le das buelta a otros grupos por años,, y que curioso, buelves a este en particular gentle giant,s exelente tiene todo,,,,claro para mi,,pero la verdad es increible amigos ,,,friend,s

  • LI ADOROOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

  • I'm fourteen, and I love all Prog. Unlike my friends, I would rather listen to musicians, not talentless imbeciles!

  • go on mate!

  • They were my ultimate band when I was 14 years old. I have an incredible ear for music that people never could comprehend or understanding the art of this music. I am now 52 years old, Have been to close to 1000 concerts from the Doobie brothers, Black Sabbeth & ELO (my first concert in 1971 on LI NY) all Prog bands (focus, Hawkwind, Zepplin, Zappa, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Tull, dead, Airoplane CSNY, Traffic, (I could go on forever)

  • @TheSteve8595 You go see ELP live?

  • @ZeppelinFromtheLake

yea, Many times from 1971 till the end. The Led Zepplin 4 album was amazing they sat down and played acoustic for an hour Page playing the electric ukellalee and what can I say.

  • Do you understand the gift that you have been given that you can identify the best & tightest music out there ( to bad about your friends ignorance).I am happy that you are an intuitive person that knows and understand this music. I hope you see the comparision from Gentle Giants songs (that are difficult to reproduce in most bands).

  • Gentle Giant was the most influencal band that every band stole from back in the 70"s. I am always here and would like to turn you on to other amazing bands & specific songs (wishbone ash, Nazereth, Zappa, Genesis).

  • @thecrimsonfloyd Prog rock isn't the only talented form of music out there.

  • @thecrimsonfloyd thus you have good taste in music. my channel full album prog masterpieces

  • @thecrimsonfloyd

I was in the same boat at 14. Your friends will come around, some of mine did.

  • You're a faggot.

  • @thecrimsonfloyd Congratulations. You successfully attention-whored 38 thumb-ups out of Youtube viewers just by mentioning your age. Want a cookie? Angsty teens like cookies, right?

No one cares how old you are. Enjoy the music and shut up.

  • @antagonist42 No, sir(or Ma'am, whoever you may be.) I wasn't intending to have anyone give me a thumbs up. That was nearly a year ago, it was a little pretentious of me, but I do really like prog. sorry If I offended you. Talentless imbeciles are cool, if that's what you want to hear. Next time I'll be sure to keep my mouth shut...

  • @antagonist42 and congratulations to you, you have just failed at attempting to start an argument with someone who im guessing is about 15 at the moment, well done round of applause everyone.

  • @gav111223 Hip-hip-hooray for hypocrisy, because so have you.

  • @antagonist42 Oh im not trying to start an argument, im just trying to bring to light how twatty your comment to thecrimsonfloyd was, besides the only indication of your age is the "42" at the end of your name so dont start with that hypocrisy bull shit.

  • @gav111223 That is only your opinion but I respect it.

  • @thecrimsonfloyd There is hope, albeit a small one, for the next generation!!

  • Comment removed

  • @thecrimsonfloyd Excellent! I agree that true musicians make the best music, not contrived and manufactured divas who can't write music, can't play any instruments, and can't even sing. They are just an image. I think that is what you are getting at when you refer to talentless imbeciles. I know the type. They are only doing the song because some record exec thinks they look attractive. Oh and hey ANTAGONIST42, nobody cares what you think. So listen to the music and SHUT THE HELL UP!

  • I wish we still had bands like this nowadays.

I'm sixteen and only listen to 1960-1970 progressive bands like King Crimson, Harmonium and Gentle Giant.

  • I'm about 10 years older, but I was about your age when I first got into prog. And you'll be happy to know that there are still bands that are as "out there" as GG and KC. I would suggest Mike Patton's bands, specifically Mr. Bungle. Also, another great old prog band you should check out is Comus. Their first album was amazing.
