  • Ritchie hated this song. If he was in this lineup you wouldn't hear the song.

  • 25 stupid gays!!

  • Wow --- anyone notice the backline? That's Ritchie's setup and I bet he abandoned his stage gear (with the exception of his strats...) when he quit in the middle of this tour -- how convenient for Joe -- lol.

  • i'm agree

  • Morse is great. He plays his own stuff perfectly. But when he has to play something that he didnt write himself, its not so good... Still a great guitarist though :-)

  • @Paragonx135 When Morse plays Highway Star live he does it note-perfect without throwing a strop. Much as I love Ritchie's work, he clearly does not want to work with the band anymore...

  • out of place or not satriani killed it. I can never listen to this song enough. Far as satriani goes to me this is one of his best, albeit i know this isnt where his talent lies.

  • Its just not Satriani's music, he feels out of place here. He is way beter on his own.

Not easy to step in Richie's shoes, is it?

  • Yeah a bit like Gilmour for me too Bro

  • evry guitar hero had theirs own style & feel.......not so easy to play with such band as DEEP PURPLE vry well known in the universe.......

  • I'm a big fan of Blackmore but I think Satriani does a great job here - commanding and soulful.

  • @mcrouble i didn't mean satriani is not good as guitarist... i just said he's able to give emotion to his public when he plays HIS music, non deep purple's... i just said he's not the right guitarist to substitute blackmore..

  • @joelioes i'm a musician not good as blackmore, even not good as satriani, but i know something about music, and i consider myself capable to give some judgment about musicians.. you can still not agree.. not my problem.

  • satriani is all techinique and no feelings... he's not the right substitute for a great guitar player such as blackmore, that put all his emotion in what he played

  • @husky9292 and WHO are you to judge these musicians ????

  • @joelioes

absolutly right. For an example see the Gilan DVD "Gilans Inn " and the estimation from Ian

    for Joe.

  • @joelioes and who are you to critizise someone for saying his opinion??? Everyone can say what he thinks and if you don't think so you are absolutely wrong here...

  • @husky9292 When a new guitarist replaces an older one,it always happen when people like you start giving their opinion about who's better and who's worse...there's no doubt Richie is a great guitarist..but,satriani is one of the best too...and yeah..satriani is not about just techniques ,his guitar playing has got emotions too...you have right to say what you feel...but don't give a baseless judgement..and enjoy music....

  • Satriani is good, but worse than Blackmore,

  • i miss ritchie :(

  • @Surogatas Yes, yes, yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeessssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss Ritchie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • satriani is overplaying..to heavy for this song.great guitar player but in this case he don't touch the emotion..long live deep purple!

  • 4:43 is proof that heaven exists

  • The best song ever made

  • about Ritchie we must to forget - he was lost in time of King Henry the VIII.. No chance to see him with Purple on stage again.. Like with the Dio..

But Satriani was and is more, more better then Morse..

  • @napivperdun morse and satriani are both amazing guitarists and you can't really say one is better than the other. In my opinion, morse's playing is generally more intecrate musically while satriani seems to eb better technically. But both are still amazing

  • Better than Morse ...but Blackmore better than anyone !!!

  • if satriani just wants to he can play with such a great feeling... I would just want him to do this more often.

  • original style or not, joe satriani played his heart into this song, and he rocked it, and its awesome, and they wouldnt have had him if they didnt expect him to annihilate the solos. WTG joe awesome as always ans this is by far my fav song with YOU on the lead, nice

  • NO ONE LIKE RITCHIE.

DEEP PURPLE WITHOUT BLACKMORE,PAICE AND LORD IS NOT DEEP PURPLE.

  • No caben dudas acerca de Satriani, pero no hay Deep Purple sin Blackmore. Es como un asado sin sal!!!

  • @vicenterix

    What?

  • Blacmoore had (have) som strange choise in his life,,,,, and he is THE guitarist... (machine head 1971).... But i think this guy make a good "stand in".... He have good sound and his own style,,,,, clear and good played... and a nice riff too..

  • Listen 2----Love Thing-//-Ten Words-//-Always with me Always with You-//-Starry Night

Revelation-//-If I could Fly..... Then tell me who you think is better

  • my fave record cheers mate

  • sorry this song is not for satriani

  • @civildisputerocks its right. Morse and Sartriani pull in their zillion-miles-an-hour note playing when Ritchie would not play at all, if , only a few notes.

  • Joe is Godly as ever! such beautiful soulful playing can come from a legend such as Joe and Joe alone! One of the best to ever touch a guitar

  • hair on satriani's head !!!!! houaou

  • Gotta love Satch!

  • Satriani is an amateur guitar player that won a prize to play a song with DP.

  • Blackmore has become a legend because he have been playing with deep purple al those years, it has nothing to do with who plays better

  • @Gitaristsatch

    Blackmore created purple...

  • Satriani was big, but Blackmore is a legend - Blackmore forever...

  • @to1mson is big

  • very soulful, i agree that perhaps Blackmore was better, but by fuck steve morse is shot in the black knight vid 1992 I think!

  • Wow! I wish he had replaced Blackmore!

  • Satriani helps a old purplesong alive ..... PERFECT !!! Guess Mr. Blackmore would preforme better,,, this is in his range.........

  • Joe understands the essence of Deep Purple! There is a hugely soulful component with Ritchie Blackmore and IMHO, Satch captures it well! Wish Ian Guillen could still hold it up!

  • Hmm.. Satriani? Even Steve Morse is million times BETTER!

    1) Brian May

    2) David Gilmpur (any questions?)

    3) Steve Morse

    **)

1**) Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen and Co

    :)

  • Perfect !!!

  • youre so right joe is absolutely the man but so is blackmore ! just not that year. i was there that year in germany and i loved every second of it

  • I like Mr. Satriani more and more and more.... WOW what a guitarist !!!!!!

  • close your eyes and listen ... is the magical song ... amazing performance satch! :D

  • Gillian sounded wonderful here...

  • Satch nails it.

  • I am a big Ritchie fan and I love this song. I have seen Steve M play it live on several occassions and feel he plays it too fast and with too many notes. I quite like this version. I think the track on the remastered Machine Head is brilliant but as Ritchie always refused to play this live we can never compare properly.

  • Blackmore is the best..... but this is VERY good .... Very good preformance of theme all !!!! ( think the solo-guitarist is doing very good)...

  • @Sjoki69

The guitarist is absolutely very good if not excellent...btw his name is Joe Satriani :-))

  • Better than Morse !!

  • @monthesun

    sounds like Gilmour!

  • .

    Deep Purple and Joe Satriani.

Oh! this is just a Great one!

    Great Guitar Licks!;o)

  • especially with hair!!!!.....o my .....

  • stupid and lame guitar solo . blackmore is still the best his version is/

  • you people allways have to make comparisons and I just don't see the point. both blackmore and satriani are great in their on way. and by the way, joe's solo is not stupid and lame at all.

  • is that really joey????

    sounds like him.....

    where was that footage taken?????

    please help me!

  • is a wonderfull song "excelente"

  • Wow, Satch had hair!

  • Sutch is not bad, of course, but does not have the natural feeling and taste what RB have. Pretty average player when going to improvistation.

  • @szabolcsbabolcs Its 100% clear why Satriani doesnt have that natural feeling as Blackmore has in this song. Satriani doenst even have a connection to this song, like Blackmore has. Try to listen to some real Joe Satriani such as the song Crying. That is pure emotion!

But if its your oppinion, then i will let you have it :D

    Have a nice day :D

  • @szabolcsbabolcs Or listen to some of his unfamous songs like Saying Goodbye, You Saved My Life, Revelation, Ten Words, The Forgotten (Part 2), Hills of the Skull. Then you will listen some emotional guitar from Satriani :P

  • I wish satriani had stayed.....

  • you can hear a bit of david gilmour coming out at like 3:40...great stuff

  • @InstrumentalMania Comfortably Numb!

  • Satriani owns Morse in this song!!!!

  • @TheFalcon212

    completely disagree :o

  • Well, I like Satrianis sound and his style....but hey! thats just me ;)))))

  • @TheFalcon212

yep u like joe, and that's why u're not objective ;)

  • Satriani makes his guitar sing.

Ritchie makes his cry such awesome tears.

  • Steve Morse is Better :)

  • The intro solo sounds like Andrew Latimer:)

  • @k1kac0

    yeah!! absolutely!

  • I really wish i was born at this time so i could see Satriani toured with Deep Purple...when i found out he did the same year i was born i almost started crying :(

  • it makes me sad too...seems like so much happened in 94

  • satriani is perfect, too much for my test :)

Ritche to me is more istinctive he has the hard rock inside, end he is crazy thats made me mod, whithout leave anythings to Satriani I steel love Ritchie

  • satriani is perfect he understands music very well

    i like his guitar tone

  • Is it only me, or is there anybody else that gets flashbacks to "Comfortably Numb" during Satriani's magnificent solo? NOT that i would accuse any of the two guitar gods off stealing, i just think they sound alike.

  • @ovemunk

You're right! I think it's the bass line during the solo and the sound of the lead guitar (same as Gilmour's)

  • @ovemunk same here. im a floyd fan man.

  • @ovemunk yes, i had the same feeling too. in some moments it reminds me comfortably numb, i think that's because it's the same rhythm and some little guitar phrases are very similar.

  • @ovemunk yes I feel ya !

  • Wow ..... What a Song !!! :-)

  • Satriani had hair!

  • @mateusromanp you mean Satriani had HAIR??? :D

  • @mateusromanp ...and Gillan had voice ;-)

  • @mateusromanp and gillan to!

  • Comment removed

  • Why blackmore dislike this epic song??

  • @kondurperusix

Probably because Ian Gillan liked it !!

  • Joe , did a great job here ! He should have stayed with the band instead of nonsense fast runs Morse...

  • My favourite version of this song is on live at olympia 96.That Morse solo is the best what ive ever heard in this song.

  • morse is god on this song

  • tremendous, at this level you cannt compare!!!

  • Ian Paice, one of my favorite drummers. Check out "The Mule" from Made in Japan. How did Satriani get this gig and how did I miss it? I've seen the original lineup in the 80's but Ritchie always playing w/his back to the crowd turned me off. This is sweet. My favorite band of all time.satriani solo in the 80's was great too. OMG look at all those Marshall stacks.

  • A true blessing to hear how Mr. Satch, one of the most technically accomplished and inventive guitarists around, pushes his own ego aside and plays 100% for the song. Beautiful, simple pentatonics just like the song calls for - and that from someone who can shred out faster and more "clever" scales than anyone.

This is TRUE musicianship; many thanks for posting!

  • Grandeeee.Big

  • Dont matter nwho's the fucking guitarrist (i'm a HUGE FAN OF BLACKMORE!) DEEP PURPLE CANT FUKIN GO WRONG! PURE GENOUS!

  • stupid germans cant ever shout up

  • Satriani does his best in this song, his performance is very close to Ritchie's. Total respect.

  • Blackmore is good in this song

    but Satriani is awesome too...

  • it solo is beautiful.

  • Thanks for posting, catchs Satriani at his best with purple

  • deep purple is blacknore

  • guerra contra el regaaateoon

  • hendrix, blackmore, gilmour, gallagher, but the human riff is the best--keith richards.

  • amazing performance. so much emotion. i think blackmore would be proud of satriani

  • I think that satch is the better one, but i agree with the great post from

    civildisputerocks

  • You can't compare Satriani with Ritchie...

Ritchie is the Hero of the Heroes along with Hendrix, Iommi, and Gilmour...

  • Satrian Is Better Than Blackmore :P:P:P it's real

  • Satriani even looks a bit like Blackmore when he has hair

  • haha, no, blackmore would not laugh at this, he would laugh at you, he ould respect Joe Satriani as the great guitarist he is, just like joe respects blackmore

  • satriani very good, blackmore the best of te universe

  • i'm not so sure....maybe only in deep purple kinkd of music

  • Guys ! I don't want to disapoint you but Blackmoore is the best in that kind of music !!

  • Blackmore would laugh at this.

  • Yes. :)

  • Everyone who sits here a blabs about who is better, who has more feeling, and who is better at guitar, needs to get life, emotions are different for eveyone and everyone views the playing of a guitar player in a different way. we can all agree that Satch and Morse are both great guitarists

  • @civildisputerocks yee right, but none of them are better than Ritchie. I can't stand that someone else play guitar in that band... He was the really big part of Purple sound, that's no doubt. That same as Gillan and Lord. Now is just substitute of Purple without two of them... Sad but true.

  • @Vladymir1916 You are correct however it is Blackmores choice to not be in purple I think that it is his mistake to not play with them, the rest of the band is still awesome.

  • @civildisputerocks AMEN !!! totally agree !

  • @civildisputerocks Satriani is a real fenomenal guitarist, no doubt about that, but here hes killing the spirit of this song. Blackmore kept it simple, but at the same time very moving. I miss that blusie feeling the original song has..

  • @Maroan2 You put this one on right place.B ravo!

  • this is a slooow song.... joe is like having a seizure of notes ..toooooo many notes.....you have to keep it simple in this song...

  • i came

  • This is good - but not half as good as Ritchies version

  • You are totally right. This is tipically when the less is more case, I mean that B. solo is much more simple but even better.

  • ian gillans great singing

  • ian gillan best voice

  • many guitarists did this song but This is by far the best!!!!

  • this is nice and Satriani is great but still... this isn't even close to what Steve Morse does with the song. Compared to him, Satriani is a kind of overdrive addict, cutting emotion and sharing a little pieces of it while Morse melts it like a butter, spreads it all over the audience and keeps you lost in the feeling.

  • wot do u mean not evern close to steve morse, This Version is light years better than steve morse, Listen satriani songs like THE FORGOTTEN PART 2, ALL ALONE , MADE IN TEARS u can find all of 'em in you tube then come back and tell me he hasn't got emotion!!!!

  • I didn't say that Satriani hasn't got any emotion, i am just saying that he doesn't show it in this song like Morse does. If I'd like to express a more biased opinion, I would say that Morse can play like Satriani, but Satriani can't play like Morse. ;)

  • Satriani plays this solo soooo amazingly well. I get goosebumps every time. I love how humble he is and you can tell he really just enjoys playing the guitar, like I hope we all do. At the end of the day it is not about how slow or how fast you play or who does it better but it's about just enjoying the moment and losing yourself in the song you are playing. Closing your eyes and going for it, then opening them and smiling at your bandmates and the people in the crowd. Guitar is not a contest

  • I don't think you have to play two notes a minute to play with a feeling. Always seems like people only think you are playing with feeling when you are playing so slow people are nodding off in the front row. You should play guitar for yourself first and foremost and love what you do because it really is a cool thing. 3 years ago I spent almost 2 grand flying down to see Satriani, front row and meet him and all that and I payed for that solely from playing my guitar. That was a cool feeling:)

  • 100% agree with you!!! Lots of respect to you man!!! rock on!!!

  • Since now this is my favourite performance by Joe... Very very good indeed. Maybe I'm not one of his fans but he plays that song with de feeling it deserves, and that's not easy.

The one who doesn't get the point is Ian Gillan. He is out of tone the most of the song.

    That is my opinion anyway.

  • I thought that was great. Not sure why some people are down on Satriani's playing on it. If I remember correctly, he did not have alot of time to practice with the band. Blackmore left, and the tour had to go on.

  • And my opinion is that the Stevie Ray Vaughan a Ritchie Blackmore are the greatest in electric guitar history!

  • Good choices, but have you ever heard Walter Trout? He is a fantastc blues,blues/rock guitarist. Look him up I think you might like him.

  • Satrani is a great guitarist, however, sometimes less is better and more simple is needed. I play this song and play the licks from the heart, which is how this guitarist is playing. Blues is the outpouring of the innermost depths of ones soul. BB KIng,Albert KIng all played some of the most heart felt leads and usually one to five notes at a time. Not demeaning anyone or their favorite guitarist, but different style make the world go round. Play it loud..play it PROUD

  • Whats the big problem, Satriani's licks are much better then the licks of Blackmore, blackmore is a Great guitarist, but his rifs are simple, but satriani's rifs are hard, and its a whole other style of music they play, ánd they're both great

  • can you imagine the audience ? Deep purple : No Blackmore but Satriani , the guitar God of all time . Big Shock !

  • Blackmore is THE Guitar God.

  • Blackmore is a Legend .Amazing with Deep Purle and Rainbow . Satriani is now the best .

    Genious , Humility , disposable , Human .

    good luck with Chikenfoot !

    My opinion only .

  • great cover, but nothing beats blackmore

  • I saw DP live Melbourne AU 1999 Steve Morse takes the cake....best Blindman ever

  • Wow. I'm a fan of the origonal version but I've gotta say that Satriani did a mega version there. And I normally don't like his stuff.! Amazing. The rest of the band are fantastic as always.

  • Gillan is a great singer, his interpretations have a lot of weight and feeling...

  • God job Joe!

    Morse can't this.

  • should have been Satriani is a guitar GOD!!!!You know booze.. LOL..

  • Satriani is a guitar gono doubt,But gillan is the vocal of the universe... i'm a humble fan of that mix!!! thank your gods!!!!!

  • Is this on a DVD?? Would love a copy. Let me know..and thanks for posting this..AWESOME!!!

  • Agree w. Eurozorro's comment.

Thanks a lot for share from Hungary!

  • goodd

  • Just amazing. It says too much about Joe how he just shapes to what the band asked at the time from him. A different Satch than in his solo carreer with another way to play but the same feeling. He's the man

  • great solo, satriani has an incedible feeling

  • I had never heard the original and so this was my first listen to it. It might be different than the Blackmore version and that's to be expected because Joe Satriani is on guitar and not Blackmore. I really love the solo Joe does!! Totally epic solo...

  • Great......

  • joe for ever

  • Blackmore and Satriani are so much better than Steve Morse.!!

  • Thanks for sharing a great song!

  • Purple have had a couple of great guitarists after blackie who are probably as technically as good as him but will never replace him. The man is a genius and the best musician of his generation. He has the ability to play anything and his improvisation skills are second to none. I honestly beleive he has been sent from heaven to give us the gift of the gods, Rock n Roll. Everytime he steps on stage he has a presence that you cant describe and which can never be copied or replaced.
