Noel: "I wrote 'Early In The Morning' in about one hour in my apartment on East fifth. . . . As Mary pointed out in her introductions from stage, much of the music of the faith community wound its way through the labor movement of the '30s and '40s and the civil rights of the '50s and '60s. So many times it speaks of an ideal society; a 'heaven' if you a hope for a better, more just life."
A place in time that society forgot . . . . when music was cool, groovy & innocent and lyrics were clean and people were pure and unspoiled . . . unlike today ~ how they serve our kids a bunch of FILTH where lyrics of gang-sta rap & hip hop- are full of profanity, recording artists are horny sexual beings portrayed in videos & pop stars are admired for getting into hot water with the law - WHAT kind of CRAP is that ?? Just another example of the deterioration of the very fabric that holds us up.
@shinstrife ~ of course we've always been sex-crazed. What I meant was the fact that lyrics today are way more EXPLICIT than before. They leave little or nothing to the imagination ~ in THAT way innocence has been lost.
You're right of course the fact that in those days there was an obscene amount of sexism, homophobia, and racial stereotyping means nothing. That women were supposed to stay in and cook and anyone other than the white majority were supposed to serve and stay quiet having their own culture subdued, suddenly oh my god! because some stupid fucking middle class kids are taking the words of a hip hop artist making money out of telling stories about his friends getting killed?
and applying it to their own lifestyle. This is clearly a good reason to diss another genre of music. Life is more complex than that. You've got woman beaters in Beverly hills Mansions and Pedophiles in the Catholic church but Calvin Cordozar Broadus isn't allowed to sit at home and put food on his table for his wife and kids because people like you think he hasn't made a decent living just because he calls himself Snoop Dogg.
No i mean she has to lean forward to the mic and thats bad on your back especially if your on stage for any time . The guys can stand straight with no stress on there backs .thats what i mean about the microphone .
I think she needn't a microphone because she had a mighty voice. She could sing with Paul or with Peter so that the trio wasn't paralyze. It's an idea but I don't know if it's the real reason.
@scoobeedu Typically with barbershop and folk acts, two microphones (often condensers) are preferred by the performers to share. They're set up in such a way to capture the audio of the whole group, but with two hot spots for solo or bass/alto parts to be heard. They can stand closer to each other and move about in such a way that they're never upstaging or understaging the rest of the group. There's no need for mic technique or mixing dynamics. The group can perform as they rehearsed.
As a child who grew up in the seventies, I sang puff the magic dragon, I saw old black and white footage of them singing at the still built Sydney Opera House, I had even heard them being played on the west wing TV show. It was MadMen however that really got my attention with this song. They are just wonderful, such tight harmonies and ice cool guitar. Quite the rediscovery of something that was always part of my consciousness.
Like a lot of people, I was introduced to this song by that episode of Mad Men. Its Christian premise means nothing to me, but the song sticks in my heart. The melody is simplicity itself: it is just the three pitches of a B-flat chord with the occasional passing tone. The rhythm is mostly just one repeated figure. Yet the song achieves an intense poignancy. It combines stasis with drive, and urgency with calm. It is short, but PP&M could not have prolonged it without spoiling its perfection.
@atosov The "Christian premise" means everything to me! So are you saying the words have nothing to do with the song? A brilliant analysis of the technical aspects of the song does not quite explain the lasting appeal...
@amangio54 "So are you saying the words have nothing to do with the song?" No; that is a non sequitur. I meant simply what I said. At any concert in which a great requiem, such as that of Brahms or Verdi (both of whom were unbelievers, by the way), is performed, you will find a large number of very appreciative listeners do not for one instant take seriously the theistic and eschatological premises of the works, any more than people who enjoy a horror movie have to believe in zombies or aliens.
@atosov You are indeed correct again, and your reasoning is impeccable. The essence of faith is that it does NOT follow logic! If it did, everyone would believe. I appreciate your confidence in this matter, and suspect that at one time you did in fact believe. I don't think because Verdi and Brahms were reported to have not believed is conclusive evidence that they always didn't believe. I don't think history is very reliable in this regard. It's like saying there is no gold in China.
@atosov I agree with you. Faith does not logically follow experience, that's why it is called faith. To say Brahms and Verdi didn't have faith would be like saying there is no gold in China. You would have to examine every single bit of China to make a definitive statement. You would therefore have to know every thought Verdi had in his whole life to really say he did not believe, especially his final thoughts. I don't suspect you have access to this information, nor do I.
@atosov Sorry for the redundance. In conclusion, I would say and was trying to say that to enjoy a horror movie that at some level there could be at least a shred of belief. I could argue that I don't believe because I know that I am watching a movie. This is logical and intellectual. But my emotions in watching the movie suggest that at least subconsciously, my mind has some belief, or it wouldn't experience emotions. That is what I was saying about you, at some level you have some faith.
Like a lot of people, I was introduced to this song by that episode of Mad Men. The Christian premise means nothing to me, but this song sticks in my heart. The melody is simplicity itself: it is just the three pitches of a B-flat chord with a few passing tones thrown in. Yet it achieves extraordinary poignancy.
