  • i was looking for rap

  • Clicking replay every 1.44 is... irresistible!

  • I might be an atheist, but this song is awesome!

  • Don't know if you noticed but, this girl is INCREDIBLY stunning !

  • @SolalChabauty She WAS stunning. Sadly the years didn't treat her well and she succumbed to complications from leukemia in 2009.

  • Give it up for Madmen. Great lead to this.

  • btw Nicolas Cage!

  • best song for replaying while totally high on life thus cleaning or whatever

  • Mad Men brought me here!

  • @molcoo Brought me too. Mad Men and Shazam!

  • i just learned to play this song on my guitar

quite a challenge actually, the chords change really fast

check out my video of me playin it

    should be up soon

    thanks

  • Noel: "I wrote 'Early In The Morning' in about one hour in my apartment on East fifth. . . . As Mary pointed out in her introductions from stage, much of the music of the faith community wound its way through the labor movement of the '30s and '40s and the civil rights of the '50s and '60s. So many times it speaks of an ideal society; a 'heaven' if you a hope for a better, more just life."

  • They make better music and altogether sound better than Lady Antebellum

  • Mad Men!

  • @mikelad777 yyyyyup :)

  • Thumbs up if you listened to this song first on Mad Men

  • Noel Paul Stookey back then did have a resemblence to Nicolas Cage

  • an amazing song

  • A place in time that society forgot . . . . when music was cool, groovy & innocent and lyrics were clean and people were pure and unspoiled . . . unlike today ~ how they serve our kids a bunch of FILTH where lyrics of gang-sta rap & hip hop- are full of profanity, recording artists are horny sexual beings portrayed in videos & pop stars are admired for getting into hot water with the law - WHAT kind of CRAP is that ?? Just another example of the deterioration of the very fabric that holds us up.

  • @Korvinski We've always been sex crazed. We're just more honest about it. Re-read poetry of the time. Hardly innocent.

  • @shinstrife ~ of course we've always been sex-crazed. What I meant was the fact that lyrics today are way more EXPLICIT than before. They leave little or nothing to the imagination ~ in THAT way innocence has been lost.

  • @Korvinski

You're right of course the fact that in those days there was an obscene amount of sexism, homophobia, and racial stereotyping means nothing. That women were supposed to stay in and cook and anyone other than the white majority were supposed to serve and stay quiet having their own culture subdued, suddenly oh my god! because some stupid fucking middle class kids are taking the words of a hip hop artist making money out of telling stories about his friends getting killed?

  • @Korvinski

and applying it to their own lifestyle. This is clearly a good reason to diss another genre of music. Life is more complex than that. You've got woman beaters in Beverly hills Mansions and Pedophiles in the Catholic church but Calvin Cordozar Broadus isn't allowed to sit at home and put food on his table for his wife and kids because people like you think he hasn't made a decent living just because he calls himself Snoop Dogg.

  • I love this song, it makes me happy.

  • @AnchorageDentist,

    Me too !

    VERY uplifting !!!

  • I can't get over it..

    SOOO GOOODDDD!!!!!!!!

  • This video was just added to a music playlist at JustPlay.fm

  • @ justplayfm,

    Good !

Far-out, cool, intense, and dig it !

  • No i mean she has to lean forward to the mic and thats bad on your back especially if your on stage for any time . The guys can stand straight with no stress on there backs .thats what i mean about the microphone .

  • Thank you Mad Men !

  • epic trak>>

  • Mad Men introduced me to this song. i'm on season 2

  • It totally took me off guard when I heard this at the end of that episode, because I hadn't heard the song over 45 years. Talk about crying!

  • sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee's PERTY ;)

  • Are they any French people listening to PPM or am I the only one?

I discovered them 2 years ago and I can't stop admire them. They were class and beautifull!!!

  • Why doesnt mary have a microphone ? seems stupid

  • @scoobeedu

I think she needn't a microphone because she had a mighty voice. She could sing with Paul or with Peter so that the trio wasn't paralyze. It's an idea but I don't know if it's the real reason.

  • @scoobeedu Typically with barbershop and folk acts, two microphones (often condensers) are preferred by the performers to share. They're set up in such a way to capture the audio of the whole group, but with two hot spots for solo or bass/alto parts to be heard. They can stand closer to each other and move about in such a way that they're never upstaging or understaging the rest of the group. There's no need for mic technique or mixing dynamics. The group can perform as they rehearsed.

  • Awesome.Guys.

  • This performance takes me back. This PP&M song always made me excited about Heaven...still does! :-)

  • As a child who grew up in the seventies, I sang puff the magic dragon, I saw old black and white footage of them singing at the still built Sydney Opera House, I had even heard them being played on the west wing TV show. It was MadMen however that really got my attention with this song. They are just wonderful, such tight harmonies and ice cool guitar. Quite the rediscovery of something that was always part of my consciousness.

  • Its so sad that only old music is the best!

I mean we cant have the Joy to say that good music is coming!

When I turn on the radio only stupid shit gets played :(

  • :D

  • Short enough to be playing during Mad Men.

  • Like a lot of people, I was introduced to this song by that episode of Mad Men. Its Christian premise means nothing to me, but the song sticks in my heart. The melody is simplicity itself: it is just the three pitches of a B-flat chord with the occasional passing tone. The rhythm is mostly just one repeated figure. Yet the song achieves an intense poignancy. It combines stasis with drive, and urgency with calm. It is short, but PP&M could not have prolonged it without spoiling its perfection.

  • @atosov The "Christian premise" means everything to me! So are you saying the words have nothing to do with the song? A brilliant analysis of the technical aspects of the song does not quite explain the lasting appeal...

  • @amangio54 "So are you saying the words have nothing to do with the song?" No; that is a non sequitur. I meant simply what I said. At any concert in which a great requiem, such as that of Brahms or Verdi (both of whom were unbelievers, by the way), is performed, you will find a large number of very appreciative listeners do not for one instant take seriously the theistic and eschatological premises of the works, any more than people who enjoy a horror movie have to believe in zombies or aliens.

  • @atosov You are indeed correct again, and your reasoning is impeccable. The essence of faith is that it does NOT follow logic! If it did, everyone would believe. I appreciate your confidence in this matter, and suspect that at one time you did in fact believe. I don't think because Verdi and Brahms were reported to have not believed is conclusive evidence that they always didn't believe. I don't think history is very reliable in this regard. It's like saying there is no gold in China.

  • @atosov I agree with you. Faith does not logically follow experience, that's why it is called faith. To say Brahms and Verdi didn't have faith would be like saying there is no gold in China. You would have to examine every single bit of China to make a definitive statement. You would therefore have to know every thought Verdi had in his whole life to really say he did not believe, especially his final thoughts. I don't suspect you have access to this information, nor do I.

  • @atosov Sorry for the redundance. In conclusion, I would say and was trying to say that to enjoy a horror movie that at some level there could be at least a shred of belief. I could argue that I don't believe because I know that I am watching a movie. This is logical and intellectual. But my emotions in watching the movie suggest that at least subconsciously, my mind has some belief, or it wouldn't experience emotions. That is what I was saying about you, at some level you have some faith.

  • THe only problem I have with this song that is that its too short!

  • @ MrLlurati,

    LOL.

I love this song quite a bit and I have thought the exact same thing: I wish it would go on !

  • Brilliant! Perfect!

  • I love this, so sweet & innocent, not like a lot of music today.

  • One of the best ending in Mad Men.

  • great harmonists

  • man oh man

  • i just watched mad men, and this song was in it

  • I've been searching for this song for ages. Heard it years ago but forgot what is was called. Thank you You Tube.

  • bloody awesome!!!!! I got goose bumps :)

  • For the info of all, Mary died last September - 2009. She is missed.

  • so awesome.

  • so awesome

  • She has great pipes. I love her coltish beauty here, too.

  • Beautiful people, beautiful song. I was so glad to see that they used it on Mad Men Season 2, Episode 8. Peter, Paul, and Mary were and still are crusaders for peace.

  • Was perfect on Mad Men...makes you stay staring at the credits until the end. :)

  • Got to this via Mad Men as well. Love it!

  • Mary turns me on

  • The people who disliked this video should be dragged into the street and shot. This is great music.

  • @ ThePromo45Guy,

    LOL. I agree!

Only after they have been boiled in oil and drawn and quartered ! LOL

  • @ThePromo45Guy

    shot???????????????

    I guess you're missing PP&M's point!

  • @littlelionessMR Has no one ever heard of sarcasm? I didn't mean it literally... I meant it to say that anyone who doesn't just love this song for what it's worth (regardless of what they believe) -- must not even be human.

  • @ThePromo45Guy

I disagree, imo this song is about love and understanding. Some people have different tastes and that is ok.

  • @ThePromo45Guy Think there is only one guy who has multiple screen names and he just keeps giving videos a thumbs down, so he gets a rise out of those who appreciate good music ........... no matter the style.

  • @ThePromo45Guy

I disagree. Not worth the trouble.

They could be shot in their homes.

  • I guess you neither believe in Christian charity nor freedom of choice.

  • @ThePromo45Guy Hardliner, much ? People have different tastes in Music and Gods. Retard.

  • So good it could turn me into a Christian, too bad i don't believe in religion. :)

  • @matthew65 Jesus Christ didn't believe in religion either. He preached salvation through himself and having a relationship with God, he never said you had to confirm to a specific religion.

  • This was on Mad Men!!!!!! Love it.

  • @KtotheY77 That's where I heard it and loved it!! Had to search for it to listen to it again. What a gem! And the show is great too :)

  • I dated many Mary look a likes during the 1960's . She was so buoyant and lively .

At age 67 i look back at this group with quite alot of musical admiration .

  • RIP Mary.....

  • I have always loved Mary's eagerness and the way she projects such power in her singing and movements.. You could feel her love and desire to simply punch that sing through the mic.. Very endearing..

  • Magnificent. So inspirational and great great music.

  • We'd love to post this one our blog, Wes Bryan - My Life in Music!

  • She is a sexier, american, christian Nico.

Mass would be a whole lot more fun if songs like this were played - fugg "Creed"

  • Has anybody noticed that Mary looks a lot like January Jones?

  • They sure put a big smile on my face, back in the 60's to now and tomorrow. RIP you wonderful lady.

  • That audience is dull. Haha. If I could have been to a PPM show, I would not have been sitting.

  • Music apart, nobody could toss her hair like Mary Travers. She _was_ the sixties.

  • The way she moves... unique

  • This is fun to play on guitar too!!

  • My God, Mary is the epitome of beauty..

  • Mary was / is the epitome of beauty of spirit.

    A loving and beautiful person.

  • @cschoon1213 yeah too bad she's fat and wrinkled now

  • Wow, we sing that with our church choir, but I had no idea they did it...Great!

  • Really?!

I have been a Christian for many years and never heard it sung in any of the churches I have attended. How odd ! This is a wonderful song !

    I LOVE this song !

  • Well, this is a very popular song among Czech protestant youth :))))

  • @cschoon1213

We have a PPM group doing it in 2 weeks.

  • Great song to wake up to in the morning. God Bless you Mary, you will be missed.

  • Is that George Harrison at the beginning -- in the audience?

  • I can see why you would think that; that one young man does indeed resemble George Harrison when he was young!

  • @cschoon1213 Definitely reminiscent of him, , but that isn't George. However, I made a George Tribute! Check my page and you'll see it.

  • no that is not george harrison --

  • one of my favorite songs

  • so good...

  • Bloody Fantastic!

  • Absolutely! The Best !

  • R.I.P. Mary. What a great loss. I remember so many of the wonderful songs done by Peter, Paul and Mary. Mary will be greatly missed.

  • Beautiful harmonies. RIP Mary Travers.

  • Pure, gorgeous energy... and the girl is beautiful!

  • RIP< Mary. We loved you.

  • RIP Mary Travers

  • Oh, and THANKS for posting the video!

  • YES, it was / is one of the highlights of my life to see and hear them outdoors under the stars at the park. I love Peter and Paul's goatees. So cool for that time. "Hep cats."

  • I forgot how great this song was. So appropriate to wake up to this morning. I saw them at Chastain in ATL in '96. This is a GREAT video performance. LOVE it.

  • That is great. These are wonderful people an are superbly talented. That must have been terrific to see them in concert !

I never saw all three in concert but I sat about 10 feet or so in front of Paul Stookey in a little bookstore in Alexandria Virginia where I live about 10 years ago where he was performing some children's songs and I got to meet him, shake his hand and talk to him a little bit. I regret I have never seen all of them in concert though! ~~~ Chuck S :-)

  • Yeah, great song.I also found it after waching that mad men´s episode..

  • I love this song!

  • Ditto! So do I ! :-) ~~~ Chuck

  • I heard this on an episode of mad men. Such a great sound! :)
