So when he's playing the modes, for example he plays E Lydian. Does that mean he's playing a B major scale starting and resolving on the E note, or is he playing a B major scale landing on B because the B note will stand out in comparison to the E pedal tone creating the modal sound? Is he playing a scale in a different key every time? I did notice him landing on the E notes, but I just wanted to be absolutely sure.
@GibsonGuitarist1022 He is playing in a different key every time such as when he goes to the E Dorian he is then in D major. E Mixolydian is then A major. So yes he's playing in different keys to give the music more variety. Hope this helps :)
@parkwaydrivetony Do you really hear it that way? Doesn't the 'E' sound like the 1 the whole time? If the E is the tonic, then you are in the key of E. 'Key' is (or should be) defined by which note is being heard as the '1'. So no matter what combination of notes you play over that E drone, they are all being heard in relationship to the E.
@11jupitercowboy8 true, i was just describing this theory in the classical way (not my way). I agree with you that yes he is staying in E but just he's changing the feel of the music by using the different modes based on the E, still changing key though.
@parkwaydrivetony I probably sound like some stuck up ass making these comments but I promise you I mean them in the total spirit of getting sound information across. You're totally right that E dorian is a mode of D major and E mixolydian is a mode of A major which is important for a total understanding of the scale/mode concept, but it's important not to confuse that with an understanding of what it means to be in a particular key (tonal center).
@parkwaydrivetony To put it another way, E Dorian and D major share the same 7 notes: D, E, F#, G, A, B, C#. In the key of D major, those 7 notes are heard as: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 (Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Ti - remember that song?). In the key of D, those SAME 7 notes are heard as: b7, 1, 2, b3, 4, 5, 6 (or Te, Do, Re, Me, Fa, Sol, La). If you are in *E* Dorian you are NOT in the key of D. You are in the key of E.
i cant think of modes as seperate Entities than their Root (ionian) scale, i wonder how does this guy produce key changes in progressions based on modes only, its wayy \above my head to change a key so easily
@kanethecracker COldplay sounds like this , this doesn't sound like coldplay :p do u know that coldplay had a copyright infringement On their song "Viva la vida" cuz they copied chords progression from Satriani's "if i could fly"
You know, I don't mean to be a "hater", but it's amazing that such a seemingly passionate person about music and as much theory as he knows, writes in such a way where it comes off very contrived and that the ENTIRE purpose of the song is just a "backing track" to showcase his solo abilities. I know I'll get negative replies on this, but players like Steve Vai and Randy Rhoads (RIP) know theory and don't sound like robots like Satriani.
The other players you mentioned though comparable to Satriani with guitar skills, musically, they are not worthy to tie his laces. What separates Satriani is the melodic content of his music. He is a master composer. Please do yourself a favor and ask Steve Vai himself instead of posting inane comments.
@NiteRidar Ohhhh, ok. Well, based on your comments I see that you are into soulless guitar playing so I won't bother wasting my time on someone who obviously doesn't have the intelligence to carry an intelligent conversation on the subject. I feel sorry for you that you think Satriani is "incredible" and Schenker can play 5 extremely tasty and melodic notes and give you goosebumps. the hurdle I'm trying to get over is that none of these modes sound "musical" until you actually hear them in a song.. It's easier for this to sound musical watching the video because of that delay/reverb and the distortion.. but playing this clean doesn't sound like much at all
This is expedient. Full of useful knowledge and personally it's keeping me busy for months learning these modes. I can feel my skills developing and its so inspiring to see a renowned player give so much useful stuff away for free. His music teacher must have been awesome. Thanks

Two ways to think about modes. 1. Relativity to the major scale. ex. E dorian is the second mode of D major. They contain exactly the same notes. 2. How a mode differs from a major or minor scale. ex. E dorian is E minor with the natural 6th as opposed to the flat 6th. Understanding both approaches is very important in order to apply them musically, which of course is what it is all about (the music!!!).

@ZeppelinFloydRoses - the way it's being explained folks will still get confused. you cannot get confused(in your head, fingers are a different story) if you learn the modes starting with ionian for each key. in order they're: ionian = 1 - 1 or tonic to tonic, dorian = 2 - 2 or supertonic to supertonic, phrygian = 3 - 3 or mediant to mediant, lydian = 4 - 4 or subdominant to subdominant, mixolydian = 5 - 5 or dominant to dominant, aeolian = 6 - 6 or submediant to submediant...
i think you want to start with relativity to the major scale. start there. otherwise i feel you'll get lost. that it's good to listen to what's being said in the video but don't let it get you lost. it will make so much more sense later once you have a handle on the patterns of tones and semitones. it's complicated enough for a long time just remembering which notes to move and where when playing melodic minor and harmonic minor.
@ZeppelinFloydRoses That would be E Dorian. If you play C major it would be E Phrygian.B Major would be E Lydian,A Major would be E Mixolydian,G major would be E Aeolian,F Major would be E Locrian...And E Major is E Ionian.
@jimmmmybrady You are correct. But that is not what is important here. He is teaching his pitch axis theory here. Technically you are right, but what is important is to know all the modes and apply them to one key. Then listen to how each has a different colour. Once your brain knows how each mode sounds, then when music is played, you will know what notes will sound good in that chord progression. Or, what modes compliment the chord progression.
I just want to learn some scales an be able to write riffs an play awesome solos for my band. But every time I try to learn something new it always leads back to music an guitar theory an I'm so confused. I want to be able to play the: Natural minor, dorian, harmonic minor, phrygian, locrian, phrygian dominant, chromatic, Hungarian minor, mixolydian, and some others. But I can't figure out when to use them over chords or power chords can someone help me?

@killchargemembrfrank so you need to learn the chords themselves E based, and A based, chords first. then you can get to sus and add chords. power chords are easy if you can do any chord then you have a power chord there. Find your root then the octave and in between the octaves you have the intervals. THAT is the crucial part INTERVALS. But sorry dude theory is almost nessesary to understand what you want. but it isnt to hard Just start with chords and their chord families.
@killchargemembrfrank if you have a question then hit me up on an email because music is too hard to describe with only 478 characters lol StringTheory808@gmail.com. and i know not everyone wants to see a page full of me lecturing. Although mabey....
i seriously wish he would release like... a lesson dvd. or maybe like, a youtube channel with different lessons every week. he's a great teacher. this is something that i could NOT wrap my head around for the longest time, and this video like... totally showed me what i was missing. go joe.
Learn modes in terms of the numbers to get an understanding of them in relation to one another then it's so much easier to understand the feeling and "relation" in a feeling sense.
@CastAirLead Not necessarily, what he's doing is using a root or pedal note and modulating with different modes or scales with that root. The sensation it causes it's bigger when using chord progressions because it's more violent the change in the sonority. Obviously he's playing just the root, so if he was playing chords, he would need to fix the chord's mode (minor or major) when switching from one mode to another one.
hes so brilliant.......

@ZeppelinFloydRoses That would be E Dorian. If you play C major it would be E Phrygian.B Major would be E Lydian,A Major would be E Mixolydian,G major would be E Aeolian,F Major would be E Locrian...And E Major is E Ionian.
jimmmmybrady 5 months ago
@jimmmmybrady You are correct. But that is not what is important here. He is teaching his pitch axis theory here. Technically you are right, but what is important is to know all the modes and apply them to one key. Then listen to how each has a different colour. Once your brain knows how each mode sounds, then when music is played, you will know what notes will sound good in that chord progression. Or, what modes compliment the chord progression.
Hybridhor 4 months ago
@Hybridhor Exactly,I was responding to ZeppelinFloyd's question,he thought that D Major over an E drone would be called D Dorian.

why you need to know modes?

@dmohr7 Give it time.
Learn modes in terms of the numbers to get an understanding of them in relation to one another then it's so much easier to understand the feeling and "relation" in a feeling sense.

The more I learn the more complicated it seems. So you dont have to e playing in the right key of a song, or the right scale? WTF?
CastAirLead 1 year ago
@CastAirLead Not necessarily, what he's doing is using a root or pedal note and modulating with different modes or scales with that root. The sensation it causes it's bigger when using chord progressions because it's more violent the change in the sonority. Obviously he's playing just the root, so if he was playing chords, he would need to fix the chord's mode (minor or major) when switching from one mode to another one.
