The UASCE requested millions from the Bush administration for the levees in NO before Katrina. W turned them down. Also, state and local gov in NO used the levee money they did have to build marinas for the wealthy.

Msneebo, let's not spread myths. By law, the levees in New Orleans are federally designed and built, and only the USACE can spend federal money on levees. Further, this video is about how individuals at the USACE disguised their identity and posted outright falsehoods as facts in an attemtpt to blame the citizens of New Orleans for the flood.

And as I stated before, I can not speak to the actions of some USACE employees. What they did was wrong. However, I dont blame the USACE entirely for the failure of the levees. If anything, the USACE has been the strongest voice for wetland reconstruction and restoration in that area.
The residents didn't know the levees were fragile and could collapse. And a Times Picayune series that depicted 20 feet of water in the city (without levee failure) has recently been debunked due to mistakes with LSU's prediction models.
And your assertion that the USACE has been a strong voice for wetland reconstruction and restoration is false. Fact: the USACE issued the permits for those 10,000 miles of navigation canals that carved up those wetlands.

They are people, but, when they use army time and equipment then they are doing so at the taxpayers expense....
If they did it in their own time and at their own expense then no problem.....
Also, they have acceptable standards of behaviour to live up to as serving officers in the army. They are supposed to remain neutral on all operational issues and to set an example of right and proper conduct in public and private life....

Pre -Katrina, the levee inspections were a shared responsibility between officials from the Corps of Engineers, the state Department of Transportation and Development, and the Orleans Levee Board.
But those inspections could not have detected design flaws deep underground or contracting flaws where levees were filled with erodible sand instead of good Louisiana clay.

These individuals employed by or soldiers of the Corps hid their identities, and posted insults and lies. Anyone posting comments with a military (usace) IP address has utilized a government internet network whether he/she was on premises or not.
Major Jakob Bruhl said in his blog "Soldiers in the Blogosphere" that he believes this sort of behavior is wrong and says it discredits his Corps (12-31-08)

The Army Corp.s Of Engineers have sprayed chemicals in the St. Johns river here in Florida killing all the vegetation which then starts a chain reaction killing fish ,birds and other marine life in the river! The Army Corps have sprayed these chemicals on the vegetation that the manatees eat and have made alot of them sick and even dead!!!! The Army Corps suck!!!

The UASCE requested millions from the Bush administration for the levees in NO before Katrina. W turned them down. Also, state and local gov in NO used the levee money they did have to build marinas for the wealthy.
the USACE is not the enemy in this, and i do not blame them for bashing your ill informed blog. The most you can blame the Corp for is not building levees to withstand a cat 5 hurricane.
The failure and blame goes way beyond the USACE and needs to be shared accordingly.

Msneebo, let's not spread myths. By law, the levees in New Orleans are federally designed and built, and only the USACE can spend federal money on levees. Further, this video is about how individuals at the USACE disguised their identity and posted outright falsehoods as facts in an attemtpt to blame the citizens of New Orleans for the flood.
After all, the whole point of a blog is to invite rollicking discussion.

"even the Red Cross no longer opens hurricane shelters in New Orleans claiming the risk to its workers is too great"

People knew the risk, yet chose to do nothing.
And as I stated before, I can not speak to the actions of some USACE employees. What they did was wrong. However, I dont blame the USACE entirely for the failure of the levees. If anything, the USACE has been the strongest voice for wetland reconstruction and restoration in that area.

The residents didn't know the levees were fragile and could collapse. And a Times Picayune series that depicted 20 feet of water in the city (without levee failure) has recently been debunked due to mistakes with LSU's prediction models.
And your assertion that the USACE has been a strong voice for wetland reconstruction and restoration is false. Fact: the USACE issued the permits for those 10,000 miles of navigation canals that carved up those wetlands.

That land is repeatedly flooded and destroyed by storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, etc. Why has no one closed down Florida? With 1600 workers there is no certain way of managing any specific control. Error free control we would assume is intended. If it were anymore than 01 percent on the internet then issues, until it is another world, we are on earth with people that will do anything money pays within natural limits. Legislating good behavior is impossible. A well directed reprimand to the people doing the attack is far different than an entire subset of a set.

Actually the corps needs to be dissolved. I use to manage 750 people in the 25th largetst engineering firm in the world. And there was continual discussion of why the corps exists at all. It should have been eliminated after the war.
It however has employees that fear job loss and are an entity that is entirely self serving.
Let the industry at large do their job to provide the people what they need.

If they did it while at work or on govt equipment that calls for disciplinary action. However as citizens at home they are allowed to do this. If an investigation finds that they were allowed or direction to do this action that is another thing. According to Bush the levees are a federal responsibility, therefore the USACE is solely responsible. As already stated they control everything-- their budget, materials, projecs, etc.
An investigation is called for here. I just hope it is better than most investigations, like the 9/11 investigaion that left more questions than answers.
The government has no 'rights', especially to condemn their own citizens. Whoever is doing this needs to do it using their own resources.

I dont think anyone is perfect. To blame the entire corps for the actions of a few is misguided. On the other hand, to think they can actually stop mother nature is futile. You could spend a couple billion dollars on dikes & then a big earthquake can take it all away. Reality says move to higher ground. The problem with common sense is that it is just not that common. This figures. Our own "stupidity" was thinking that the corps was doing what needed to be done to keep us from having our houses from floating away, and now they blame us. This is an agency that is supposed to know what is best for the community, and for YEARS it has been putting off the work that needed to be done to keep us safe. Now they say it's because we didn't want them to do the work! Oh well, I hope enough people see this to make a difference.

I think this story should make National News. I think that it's pathetic that our nation can not invest in proper infrastructure for the protection and safety of its citizens but can invest $35 billion in three auto companies' failed business plans. No matter what part of New Orleans we live in, we NEED a reliable, well-designed levee system. Instead, we have to deal with pedantic, fatuous government contractors that don't care about the city at all.

I find it amazing that the Corps is not held responsible. It is clear that the levees that were built banking MRGO and the industrial canal are the workings of a navigation project and NOT flood control. Until we as people understand that our government is run by rich people we all will remain oppressed. Maybe the Obama victory will educate honest statesmen how to defeat the political machines that consistently ignore the common folk.
