You guys have to realize that it became instinct to cut off his own arm. Im not sure, but I remember Aron Ralston stating that he couldnt even imagine cutting off his arm at first. Adrenaline and anxiety overtakes one's mind eventually if you are stuck for 5 long days...all that matters is survival at the point.
