Not to make light of your near death experience (obviously I'm about to) but I hope the duck taped rear mirror isn't an indicator of how the brakes failed :P
I hate those stupid ass launchpads they have around the essess. That shit is going to get somebody fucking killed one of these days when a car goes off the track just right and digs into the sands and just flips endlessly.
@3593893 This guys a friend of mine. The chassis was twisted a little. He striped the car and sold the chassis. He's working on building something else now.
And, despite how it looks it was going that fast when he tried to hit the brakes. After going off and sliding didn't hit the wall at 130, but was probably at least 50. The tires keep it from being a solid hit. The car had 230-250 at the wheels depending on how much boost and weighed about 1400lbs. Yes, it was fast.
@OSUCop Yes. Oh my, I noticed that too. He is wearing a long sleeved t-shirt, blue jeans, and mechanic gloves. lol. How the hell did they let him race. I can tell you it wasn't SCCA, that's for sure.
@OSUCop That was probably a PDX or an open track day. Hence the lack of fire retardent clothing. China beach can be a nasty mistress. I've seen the aftermath of a 350Z losing its brakes at this turn, that driver wound up next to the ambulance, got out of his mangled wreck and walked right to the back doors.
That's the same place where the Aston Martin went off during an ALMS race a few years ago and flew backwards further than the Wright Brothers' first flight.
i'm sure you're over it by now and hope you're a little wiser. not talking about your driving, rather your silly staring at the car after the crash. i can understand you being frustrated and pissed off but use your brain next time and get the hell out of the way. if you can crash there so can someone else and they will squash you like a little bug.
damn man you gave a bad look to your seven after the crash!! how is she right now? it could have been worst if you think about it, you were very lucky
How can you still be braking hard right till you leave the track, with a broken pedal?? Looks you braked too late to me and snapped the pedal by pressing it too hard? :) bad luck.
Tough break to lose it due to a mechanical. Cars mend easier than people. Be glad you were well enough to walk away and mutter a few well chosen expletives.
As an armchair automotive enthusiast preparing for a career in music, I figure I'll never be able to afford anything better than a Locost anyway. Considering that it's basically a roll cage on wheels, I'd imagine it's relatively safe.
You don't skip across gravel traps at 30mph. You dig in. That was a very hard hit. Considerably more then 30mph. Hitting the tires makes the impact look somewhat lighter then it really is. I'd say that was a 60mph hit. It's probably lucky it wasn't a backwards hit. That may have been much harder on the back and neck.
I was doing 130mph when I tried to start braking (6500rpm in 5th gear with 1994 Miata drivetrain), probably scrubbed off 30-40mph by the time I left the track, and was doing more like 60-70 when I actually hit the wall. I AM one of the luckiest, and WILL have a HANS device when I'm done building the next car. Thanks for looking.
yea Im building one in my garage right now but after seeing this I think I'll throw a few extra bucks at the brakes, jesus yea that's crazy, Its gotta be so shitty to see your homebuilt beauty like that...
Hope its not too costly to fix as i built and raced my own car,on a very tight budget i may add, some years back and it is hard to see something like this happen after all your time and hard work putting it together and onto a track.
Dude, even after we talked today, I didn't have an appreciation for the crash you walked away from. I very glad to have seen you out at the rally, and with only a sore neck, plus a few harness bruses. Any way I can help my friend, just let me know.
Mark...glad to see your OK. We came over the hill to watch the action and saw the aftermth. From the marks in the gravel it looked like you were airborne for at least 20 feet. Hopefully the car's not too badly damaged. - Carl R.
Man.... Marky Mark, you're a lucky man that you didn't get hurt too bad. I know you've got to be seriously bummed though. Very sorry to hear this happened. Hopefully it can be repaired, but that was a pretty hard hit. At least the gravel slowed you down a bit. Just... wow... -Leebo
Damn dude, where's the HANS!

I am a little confused by the fact that the driver is not wearing a fire rated driver's suit. I am guessing that this was a club event at the track?

It's a shame but you can still build another one, that's one advantage of LOCOSTs and one of the main reasons why I love them

Because then the car would slide, and proceed to tumble sideways, probably killing the driver.

sorry, that was no where near 130, you sure its not KPH, I'd say you left track about 60/70mph hit tyres about 30mph???

I'm having trouble believing he was going 130mph when he hit that wall or even when he left the track.
If so he is the luckiest man on earth crashing like that with no HANS device in a LOCOST and walking away.

@jharry3: plus, even taking into account the slowing effect a camera has, it just doesn't look like 130, unless he means kilometers instead of miles.
