why do you say he was forced..? i think people liked the performance primarily because it gave the fans, and most especially the magalona family and friends sort of a living symbol through elmo that his dad could be or could have been right there singing. simple as that, no "infringement" on the artistry of elmo's great dad, just an "in memoriam" performance.
