The great singers use gestures; Brightman, Evancho, Louwerse, Turunen...they all do it. They can't stand like a cigar store Indian they have to move. And you can see their hearts in their eyes, especially Mirusia. IMO she is the #1 Classical singer in the genre today. Not opera. Classical and Classical Crossover. Andre really found an unpolished gem and turned her into a show stopper.
ze gebruikt haar handen ook om richting te geven aan haar klank.. she also uses her hands to give direction to her sound... german translation fails here !!
I sing this song myself, when i do, I must admit i also do those hand gestures, and at the end, I do the same, it helps me reach the high notes much easier. But maybe thats just me?!
her handgesturing can also mean she wants to bring out emotion.... it can also mean she uses her arms and thus her movements to extract her bestest singing abilities that come from her chest, and body....
Seriously, somebody needs to get this girl into an adaptation of "Phantom" that's faithful to the novel. She has an AMAZING voice and she's a blond, just like how Gaston Leroux described Christine in the book. :)
No offence, it's extraordinary, I didn't mean it was ugly or anything.
I don't find the gestures with the hands annoying, but most of the times you just see her face and a rising hand, that looks weird. It would probably have looked better if we'd seen more of her instead of so many close-ups.
This performance is very moving. Talented singer, gifted conductor and violinist. What a combination! The world is a beautiful place when there is so much to give to the world!
Mirusia is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen and like Andre says...she does sing like an angel. She is,in my opinion, the best singer on the planet.
The hands thing may apply to a different performance, but the hand gesturing here adds to the excellent performance and sound, especially considering the words of the song. I guess some people like an emotionless, undramatic performance. This is indeed near flawless!
I've never heard it sung in this key before! I've heard orchestras play it, but never someone sing it! She did a beautiful job, and I agree with you EuropeanGodess and ClassicalRelated...I don't think the hand gestures fit the song at all. It's a sad song! I don't know anyone in mourning who would use such intricate hand gestures while singing, or even talking, about their loss. Some hand gestures certainly, but not something so grandiose.
Didn't keep me from getting chills tho. ;) Beautiful!
It's not necessarily as sad song. The way it is performed here is as one cherising the memories of someone she wishes were here. To me it shows tact how they were able to convert the words to that feeling/dramatization of cherising memories. Making this sad would not have been anything special... and moreover in my opinion would have made the song and performance boring
Sein Akzent ist so niedlich^^ Und die hübsche junge Lady kann wirklich ausgezeichnet singen, nur... kann sie bitte ihre Hände still halten, das lenkt total vom Song ab und wirkt ein bisschen übertrieben...
Many thanks for your reaction. I had expected a reaction to take place sooner. In fact, my own reaction to EuropeenGodess was designed to generate further reactions.
Now I hope you don't feel taken in by this. I just wanted to start a discussion on this.
You are jumping to a conclusion though. I never suggested Mirusia should act laike a statuette. But are her movements really an act? Do they fit the song? Or are they just a touch contrived?
@ClassicalRelated IMPO...If at any point after the first note is voiced you, for some strange reason, still have your eyes open, you are completely missing the point. With vocals like these and the perfect harmony of Andre's orchestra? If opera is really good, this good...I fear that it may only be truly appreciated by the blind. I know that my imagination is capable of painting a much better representation than ANYTHING they could ever stage...again, just my opinion :)
@ClassicalRelated Waving your hands while singing is something that comes natural... I do it too, lol :D I think it makes the music flow more (if she would move her hands in very fast, short movements, her voice would sound much 'harder')
She could sing without it, but I like it... it makes it seem like she's feeling the music more :)
WEll I have to agree ..she IS VERY VERY good ...in a dramatic sort of way ..and wow!! VERY talented.... and Id go and watch her any day...... but I still prefer this.. and Emmy Rossum?? obviously it sounds great in a production..but for purity.. this is a young singer who is both stunning and Hypnotic... and its all so effortless and joyfull ...how singing should be.....! my vote stays here ;-)
nobody never ever can be better than Emmy Rossum in the Lloyd Webber movie - that's classic.
But this girl singing is absolutely great, wishing somebody teaches her don't emote too much and hold in the hands - elegance & simplisity is required for greater performance
i have to say this is one of the most ridiculous comments ive ever seen on youtube (and thats saying a lot). don't emote?! she doesn't have the benefit of a movie set to express the song, nor does she have the extremely kind studio production rossum had. Anyone who knows even a tiny bit about music will tell you that rossum was simply terrible in the film (not her fault - she just doesn't have the range for the role). this performance is near flawless
if you had any feelings at all you should shut your eyes, listen to the buitifull sound of her voice !then you could,nt see the silence of her hands!!

Boy you miss the masi expression of feelins.
It is an integral part of her singing,
Which is by the way the ultimate in clearness and purity
She surpasses Callas, E Schwartzkopf , Tiki Te Kand...

This is a typical thing for opera singers... they sing with their ENTIRE body!

Those do not like the performance can just click to leave. It is a free world.

There's nothing wrong with her hand gesturing, it's perfectly appropriate for this piece, very expressive. Such a graceful angel!

I can read German, but have insufficient knowledge of it to write in it.
So I respond in English, hoping that you can read it. Otherwise I have to revert to my native language Dutch to reply.
I never thought about Mirusia's waving hands, but I think you have a valid point here!
It does seem a bit overdone, and it could well distract people from the real quality of her performance.
Thank you for an insightful analysis!

Sorry, I think that's total nonsense. She's not only singing, it's also an act. Standing still like a statue would be totally ridiculous.
