try the sparkplugs it could also be bad coils or the little rubber boots going down ontop of the spark plugs i had a problem like that i couldnt even drive it. it would back fire and sounded like shit i had the coils replaced and the rubber boots pretty much everything under the 2.4 valve cover

You probably fixed this already... but i had the exact problem, the catalytic converter broke and clogged the exhaust when i was on the highway, haha
