The spiral started as a turned long taper cone. I then wrapped a length of masking tape up the cone - creating a spiral path to makeshallow saw cuts along. I then carved off wood on either side of the cut to create a spiral V groove for a small "rat tail" file to follow to file - or more accurately - wood rasp off either side of the V groove spiral. Then it was sand papering things smooth.
