  • My lab came from Hurricane katrina. My mother brought her home when she went down to help family. She was just a few weeks old.

  • I flew in a Coast Guard helo during Katrina. I personally hoisted 3 dogs and their owners. It was not a problem from our point of view as long as the owners had a leash. I wish I could have rescued more...

  • Sort of off topic, but can I just say a very belated "thank you" to you and the rest of the Guard for the amazing job you did after Katrina! The rest of the government should have followed your example. And thank you for taking pets!

  • Although this is possibly old news I have just become aware of this (I am from the uk) does anyone know what the situation is now (as at mid July 2007)

  • There are still thousands of dogs and cats homeless - both roaming the city and being cared for in makeshift shelters by local rescue groups who can really use our help. Two such groups - not to exclude many others that have worked very hard - are SAF (Southern Animal Foundation) and Best Friends ( a nationally known rescue organization). Please contact them if you want ot know more or contribute. And hurricane season is here again so we'll see ehat happens .....

  • Thanks for the info I don't think it could happen in the uk or the prime minister would probably have to resign. I visted both sites and didn't see anything about this on their home page so will donate something to our rspca and go on an induction course to do become a dog walker for our local rescue centre. We have a rescue dog and we love him so much, it hurts me to think other dogs are in desparate sitautions. Incidentally I couldn't see my original message it appears to have been deleted?

  • i hope the guards who said those things at 38 seconds BURN IN HELL!!!!!!!

  • Thank you very much

  • Buy a shirt! Support the people that went out of their way to save these animals!

  • i fucking love his video!! AMEN!!

  • i cant blame the owners but no matter what i wuld still take mi pet sum how shes not very big so i culd put her in sumthing

  • For the law enforcement who did not allow people to take their pets during this hurricane, all I can say to you is that you will rot in HELL!

  • the owners were forced by gun point to leave their animals behind. i hold the government responsible. how could they do such a thoughtless, cruel thing? those animals didn't have a chance! Shame on those who allowed these animals to be left behind...what a cruel way to die. Some animals were shot shortly after their owners evacuated...what is the point of that!?! read the story:go to abc dot go dot com slash TheLaw slash story?id=3265151&page=1

  • They will get theirs, dont worry. The only problem is, we wont get to see or hear about it. But they will get their karma.

  • That's horrible. They held a person to gun point? How could they be willing to shoot a person just because they won't abandon their pets? And why would they shoot the animals themselves? Seemed to me like a pathetic attempt to "help" people without making any effort...

  • Every time I watch this, I cry. Cant help it. BUT I bought a shirt, and you should too. If ya cant get out and help you might as well help by giving orginizations some money, people that work to save them deserve a HUGE paycheck!

  • i do not hold the owners of these animals responsible. people have to make drastic choices in times of terror. you can not hate them!

  • the purpose of the film is not to place blame on owners, but to raise awareness, on a personal and community and government level, of the need to be able to evacuate WITH your pets.

  • I think it's awful that those poor defenseless animals were forced to be left behind...it's travesty and sick!! I could cry. It's terrible.

  • lol made yall cry, i lost my house and all of my pets cuz i couldt take em when i got back to my city my pets where all dead.i was so sad

  • gosh! i hate people who don't understand how you can love an animal like a sister or a brother.

  • its a crying shame

  • almost made me cry? Dang, I am in full tears. And to think I stupidly chickened out going down after planning a week off 3 different times to go and help these poor animals. I am a full believer, I will not leave anywhere without my pets. I will die if they die. Thank you for this touching Video, and reminder just how precious our pets are.

  • I still don't get why the pets weren't allowed to evacuate as well?

  • omg that made me cry, that is so sad

  • how can i help ?

  • this almost made me cry! I love it, it's so sad they were like this.. :(

  • As of right now are there still homeless dogs running around NO?

  • The people who rescued these dogs are just angels. But, there's not even a question as to what happens to our 2 Shih Tzu if we have to evacuate.

  • I will be damned before I abandon my cats.

  • god im crying

how could they make them leave there pets?

    i could never!!!!

  • Have an evacuation plan for you and your pets even if you live in an area that gets no storms. Chemical spills, wildfires, terrorist attack, etc. can all force a mass evacuation and you and your pets will be at the mercy of the government officials that run the relocation. Everyone thought that they would be able to come back in a few days. Write to your congressmen to get bills passed to allow pets in shelters. Many people died rather than leave their pets.

  • This was a GREAT video! I think everyone should email this to as many people as they can!

If this happened once - you know its going to happen again! We must not let this happen again.

  • Nice work! Nice Job!

  • What a wonderful Video!! Great Job. Im from New Orleans and I was here. I stayed 9-days in N.O. after the storm because I refused to leave my 2-cats. I finally got air-lifted out with my cats, I was one of the lucky ones...

  • I live on the outskirts of New Orleans. I took my dog & 4 cats when I left. I know people who left their pets and were just heart-broken and worried the whole time. Thank God theirs were O.K.. They said never again. They thought they would only be gone 3 days, it turned into 2 weeks. They left lots&lots of food and water. So many didn't however. So Sad...

  • i woud rater die than leave my animals they once saved my life and i woud risk mine to save them

  • Many people did die because they would not leave their pets. They knew that the pets were not allowed in the shelters and they had no way to get to a hotel. They drowned with their pets rather than leave them to an uncertain fate. And many many more survived the storm with their pets, only to be forced at gunpoint to evacuate and leave their pets to a horrible fate. PLEASE have an evacuation plan for you and your pets

  • the fact that you couldnt take basically your brother/sister/daughter/son or family member makes me wanna vomit. i go they go they stay i stay i will never leave the side of my faithfull companion, as wouln't they

  • it was terrible that week, There were men on the road wiht guns telling people that where they were going they couldn't bring their animals, those animals were all loved, its hooribel that they weren't able to take their pets with them

  • Thank you for posting this. I'm going to the web site right now!

  • 5 stars and we were able to see all of this poorness at german tv - it makes us so sad - wish all the pets good luck and i am sure i had never leave my pet!!

  • fuck the new orleans goverment, couldnt do shit, thats right you failed miserably it was the people that united and survived

  • I evacuated due to Hurricane Rita. Me, my child, 5 guinea pigs, my cat, some clothes, snacks and water for all were all in my car for 12½ hours. I'd have slept in the car, if necessary, to keep them with me. Since then, I've become a certified veterinary first responder with a rescue organization. I'm glad the plight of pets in disasters is being addressed, but am so sorry it took all the suffering of Katrina to get it done.

  • I'm a medic in MS & had to stay with police & fire dept. My family & pets evac'd to FL & made it to IN for an extended stay. I'll take to the grave with me memories of climbing through debris-blocked houses only to find people who stayed with pets clutched in their arms. They didn't have a chance. Storm surge here was 33ft in some areas. A year later, we have one pet-friendly shelter, but it's not enough. Please plan to go north with your pet, somehow. This could happen again any day.

  • It is a crime what has happened to my beloved New Orleans and all the people and pets who lived there. It could happen at ANYTIME to another city in the US and does anyone really believe that they would be treated the way we were?

I am so glad people are realizing we need rights for our pets too.

again...thank you not only from me but from my dog and two cats that are new orleans ex-pats.

  • I hope it is okay I embedded this on my myspace page as i think it is so important for people to see....

Thank you so much for this...

  • man i love animals and i can not see this!

  • my goodness was that sad~!! 5 fuckin stars

  • Excellent true video. I was one who couldn't sleep til I got there, then couldn't sleep because I'd been there, and kept going back. If only people could all see this video and help empty the shelters and find homes or help with reunions that are still going on.

  • i give it 5 stars...*sniff*

  • Excellent. Four stars.
