  • everyone must experence a loss. everyone does. it was either dan gable losing in the oplymics or this match. he needed to get the loss out of his way. i believe that gable was the best wrestler to live. but dont get me wrong. i give plenty of respect to larry owings.

  • When he looks back on this in a interview he was saying that losing is something he needed to experience even though he wanted to win it really bad and he's right about tht

  • id like to see him do that again

  • You know, most people would want to have a career like Dan Gables, but I want to have a career like Owings.

  • HAWKS

  • Dan Gable beat Dan Gable.

  • Dan Gable is my hero

  • Dan gable is truly a great guy ^_^ I had the opportunity to meet him and he's real down to earth.

  • @musicpirate08 Who isn't down to earth? I mean have you ever shook a man's hand and then looked down and he's hovering six feet off the ground?

  • Once Larry succeeded with that fireman's carry , then continued leg control Gable knew he was in trouble

  • Gable= good wrestler, greatest coach of all time

  • IMO, it seems Gable was a little passive throughout the whole match. He didn't go after it. He didn't attack as much as he should. Still, the greatest wrestler of All time.

  • Cael Sanderson lost in like... Olympics or something right? He was only undefeated in college right?

  • @derrick302 I know he lost to Les gutches whos also from Oregon like larry owings in some match its here on youtube

  • @dave151550 i beleive it was the world trails. im pretty sure it was his only loss in national freestyle. As for collegiac style wrestling in the ncaa he was undefeated.

  • dat shows dat anybody can be beat even the greatest or the best u just have 2 work and bust yo ass fo great shi to happpen

  • @TheLionheart93 cael sanderson

  • Does anyone else think Gable looked tired at the end of the first? And I realize that's like saying superman looked tired after a brisk jog...but he still looked tired to me. He just didn't seem like he had intensity he is famous for whenever he was down.

  • If you notice at the end of the match, it looks as if neither Larry, nor Dan, can believe that Dan actually lost. Incredible. It looks like Owings is actually apologetic that he beat Gable. This is, in my opinion, maybe the greatest upset in the history of sport, right along side the miracle on ice in 1980, and the Jets over the Colts in 69. It was that big.

  • @1MikeMcHugh I agree 100%. It did seem as if Owings was apologetic that he beat Gable. Of course I would probably feel the same way. It seemed as if nobody in the world wanted Owings to win, but he did, so that created a certain kind of unusual atmosphere. The headlines didn't read "Owings won", they read "Gable lost". All the more credit to Owings for having the courage to not only go against the great Dan Gable but everyone else on the planet as well. Owings would have made a fine Marine

  • Larry Owings is my Great Uncle. We have talked about this match. Inspirational story.

  • dude i dont see how its possible to be 181 and 0 haha

i will never be that good

  • @TheMattboi you have to believe in yourself before others will believe in you. That's how Dan Gable did it. That's how you need to do it too. Pessimism will get you nowhere :)

  • dan gable was obviously a technically strong wrestler, but his greatest strength was his unbeatable conditioning and endurance, as well as the fact that he was the best scrambler of all time.

  • Regardless of who won, Gable was unbelievably strong. His ability to escape to the resent when faced with a disadvantaged position looks effortless.

  • This reminds me of Vision Quest when Louden Swain(underdog) beats Shute.

  • @d3vilscry666 yea. minus the constant lateral drops lol

  • @ndwrestler haha yeah but that would be an epic way to win a match against someone who is really good.

  • Owings should have been called for locking hands in the first period. 2:11

  • @hackman12179 No.

  • gable is god!!!!

  • @louisvillemadman1 FOR ReAL

  • Larry Owings wrestled a great match against possibly the greatest opponent in the history of wrestling. He (Larry Owings) deserves great credit and a great spot in the history of wrestling because of it. If we don't honor Owings then we are not honoring Dan Gable either. Not just anyone could beat Dan Gable. Only a great wrestler who deserves great credit could do that.

  • @Randohm oh shut the hell up

  • @Randohm You are very correct. And I wonder if Coach Gable believes, today, that this loss--in time, made him even greater than he already was, or, if he still looks at the loss with anger. He is such a fighter, you got to wonder if he could buy into the "make me better" argument.

  • @jimquantic Dan Gable did admit that the defeat made him better you can see it in this documentary at the 3:25 mark posted on youtube "Dan Gable 1972 Olympic Special" I think you can learn far more about a man by the way he takes his losses than you can by the way he takes his victories. I think that's the reason Dan Gable is more popular than Cael Sanderson. Cael Sanderson never had to deal with a defeat like Dan Gable's loss to Larry Owings.

  • @Randohm Well, you are right of course. People want imperfect heroes, and never loosing makes it hard for people to relate to you.

  • id sell my fuckin soul to wrestle like either of them

  • @thecamelsalesman get to work then

  • i dont get why everyone is arguing they're both amazing wrestlers and this is one of the most exciting matches i've ever seen

  • I was lucky enough to shake Larry Owings hand when he awarded the first place medals at the Canby Invitational Tournament in 1985 (his high school and mine)....ironically I was wearing a pair of Dan Gable wrestling shoes, which he pointed to and winked.

  • @boilermakerjoel i know owings won when it mattered but gable piss pounded him the other 2 times they wrestled at world and olympic team trials once before they met in college (which gave owings the motivation to beat gable) and once after which was actually the bigger of the 2 ass kickings that gable put on him

  • I was a wrestler / Seattle area /coached by Randy Berg (UW) I was being groomed in 72 /73 to be in the upcoming group of UW wrestlers. My take on this match Gable is great but a style of offensive leg wrestling that consumed the Seattle area, late 60s /early 70s which was really pioneered by the wild and crazy Rick Sanders at Portland State If you ever have a chance to view film of him you won't be disappointed. Had he not passed early, may have reached near Gable stature. (I have more )

  • Respond to this video... Continued...

All due respect to Dan, this evolved style of leg wrestling /cradle action mix Larry employed (UWash. Style)---- I think was enough unfamiliar to frustrate him...I don't believe he was less prepared for this NC2A final as he has stated. Gable was defensive wrestler, I truly think he would have been lucky to win on this day. It was not Larry's lucky day. Sadly I think the subtleties and offensive move links of the UW style is a lost art.

  • stop talking shit about owings if he was able to make the weight then theres nothing wrong with dropping and almost all wrestlers cut weight i weigh 145 normally and i wrestle at 130 thts 3 weight classes plus watching this match im really dissapointed in gables proformance i do agree he is one of the greatest wrestlers ever but he did not wrestle like he wnted to win the match tht bad

  • i'd be crying too if i lost my very last collegiate match after maintaining a flawless record for so long. what an exciting match.

  • Owings and Gable both had to weigh in at a certain weight for this tournament. Some people think Owings was a punk for dropping weight to face Gable. I admire him for it. Is there something unfair about what Owings did? I am a huge Gable fan. But I also love the Owings story. No doubt Gable is the greatest wrestler in world history. But what Owings did was great.

  • I can't believe the Gable shit. Owings won the match. Clearly. It inspired Gable to win an Olympic Gold Medal. Gable-lovers, get over it. He lost.

  • 9:36 i'd be pretty upset too

  • 1:12 how does gable not get 2 backs?

  • @chadman3000 i think it might be the different rules back then.

  • maybe if owings wasnt a dick and drop 2 weight classes just so dan wouldnt be undefeated, dan would be 172-0.

  • Comment removed

  • @kirkthewrestler he would have been 182-0

  • @kirkthewrestler maybe if u knew anything about wrestling you would know that every1 cuts weight like crazy. I dropped from my normal weight (160 or so) down to the 141 weight class. and that wasnt even the largest drop on my team. so dont go shit talkin about anybody. owings earned that title, bar none.

    ps. gable dropped weight to

  • @kirkthewrestler Dan lost the match to an atrophied punk who dropped two classes. What does that tell you? It told Gable to be ready for Munich. Gable lost the match. The guy who beat him deserved to beat him, and did a hell of a job. Why would you call that guy a dick? Could you have beaten Gable? If not, what organ does that make you?

  • @kirkthewrestler dude, wtf,? I grew up in the same town as Gabel and am a big fan and wish he could have won that matchm, but why would you call Owings "a dick" FYI everyone cuts weigiht in the US.

  • gable was iowa state in the red and yellow

  • Comment removed

  • I beleuve gable said something to the extent of show me a man who has never lost and ill show you a man who will never suceed

  • Owned by Owings!

  • 4:54 amazing ankle pick by gable :) i was watchin and just waitin for it too happen. i was like look ankle picks there and then bam dan picks that shit

  • well... mr.gable himself said a true champion isnt the one with the no loss record, its the one with that 1 loss and all the expirienced gained from it

  • cael sanderson is #1

  • rick sanders was better

  • I'd put Gable at third all-time, behind 1- Cael Sanderson and 2- Bobby Douglas.

  • @revots123 yea but what about john smith? cael is #1 no doubt though

  • @beastskater4 Yeah, Smith should make the list - 2 time national champ, 2 time olympic champ, 4 time world champ...I think pretty much everyone agrees that Sanderson should top any 'all time list', after 1st it gets a little harder to place guys. For me it's still Sanderson then Douglas.....

  • @revots123 i think its cael, douglas, gable, smith, kurt angle maybe 5th

  • @revots123 cael didnt have the career after college that smith had he cant really compare to gable either even though they have the same amount of olympic golds because cael didnt dominate like gable he wasnt even sure he wanted to wrestle going into 04

  • 9:03 - 9:17. breath-taking.

  • I can beat Dan Gable in a bar fight.

  • im pretty sure dan gable would own you

  • @denzelsnipes69 what the hell does that have to do with anything

  • Dan Gable had the flu and was running a fever .

  • @pizza1960man EXCUSES ! Puhleeez!

  • @pizza1960man

I watched a Gable interview after this fight and he made NO excuses.

Also having a flu/running a fever would have factored big into him keeping his proper weight for the fight.

  • haha i dont think they knew what a switch was back then, gable could have reversed him 3 times

  • oo and btw i like there 3 peice suit my dad wrestled in then 2 back then he wuz pretty good -free scorlarship- but yah they look cool

  • im confused ok so gable wrestles 4 isu or iowa state university so is he the 1 in the red or black cuz black and gold is the hawkeyes for iowa university but gable didnt wrestle 4 them right plz sopome1 explain

  • Gable wrestled for Iowa state university, but coached for Iowa university....pretty wild being that they are rival schools and he accomplished so much for each of them.

  • gable has been my hero since i started wrestling in 7th grade i belive gable is the better wrestler

  • From a Judoka

    Amazing skill!

  • I was sitting on the edge of the mat that night, leaning back on my elbow,as a sophomore in high-school. Our coach had brought us down from Milwaukee to Evanstan to watch the semis and finals. Dan Gable was my idol at the time. Seeing him lose that night taught me,as great as you are or think you are, there's always somebody out there that's better. Anybody for starting an old-timer tourny?

  • I don't think Owings was better, he just got lucky.

  • @TheJamesmichel i drove in from iowa as a senior in high school. dave martin was from my home town. it was simply devistating, then, dave won his ncaa title

  • 180-0!

  • @mcbcb0902 it was a firemens carry with out the leg..it mostly used to counter the head lock

  • Red is gable

  • who's who?

  • i think that was a duck under

  • @mattmann1721 yea, i think so

  • its called a re-shot.

  • looks like he tried to do an arm spin

  • Wow! I love this sport and miss it deeply.

  • a form of a duck under

  • Dan Gable is respectable. Larry Owings went down two weight-classes to wrestle Dan. He wanted to end his record.

  • seriously?

  • Messing up the greatest record? I don't understand.

Are your opponents supposed to respect your record and not fight to win?

  • larry earnded nothing exept messing up the greatest reacord of all time, and its too bad Dan lost he should of wrestled better- no like the worlds greatest wrestler that ever lived yet he blew it all away with this match. But still AMAZING what he did in the Olympics. not a single piont scored on him though the whole thing. much respect to both of them

  • Don't be a retard. Being the only blimish on an near perfect college record is the greatest accomplishment. Gable's 182-0 dream just wasn't meant to be. I do think Owens was Stalling a little by not being as aggressive on bottom.

  • Um, not complety true. He was great and he has become a maglificent couch, but he did not have the greatest record, therefor, not the greatest accomplishment, if you're only talking of an athletes record being the accomplishment. Remember Cael Sanderson; 159-0 college, 4 time Big 12, 3 Hodge Trophy awards.. and so on

  • i guess i disagree, the final score was 13-11. There were no stalling calls necessary for that match.

  • nearly as good? this is 10 x better than now.... now all they do is stand up and hand fight the whole match...

  • even the guy that won looks sad when his hand was raised

  • it just hurts to watch that. Dan Gable is still the biggest stud ever. & Cael Sanderson.

  • Are you kidding me? Not as good? What does that even mean?

  • you gotta admit that was a sweet move by Owings to win the match

  • larry owings trained soo hard for the match!

  • Whata match!! Larry earned it.

  • sheepster1000 is a idiot lol

  • My Favorite is Gable Crying at the end.

  • Wow, I can't believe how quiet the crowd was during the entire match! They must have been more nervous than the wrestlers. Well, it's understandable with the magnitude of this match and what was on the line for Dan Gable. But you could hear a pin drop, this is amazing, not even a cheer or a peep!

  • thats because the is no audio just static

this is from the 70's remember

  • whats really amazing is that you dont even here the refs whistle

    retard

  • ur a fuckin down syndromed donkey. please commit suicide.

  • Go Huskies!

  • I think Dan got hit for stalling in the 2nd period. The ref holds up a fist and 1 finger when they go out

  • University of Washington, not Washington University.

  • pretty sloppy lol.. i like to see hwat you and dan look like wrestling..

  • Best match of all time..

  • Why does it go from 6-2 to 7-2 when they go out of bounds?

  • flee call??

  • yes

  • back then i think it was if your pushed out of bounds its a point for the other guy

  • this is actually pretty sloppy wrestling.

  • I agree. Seems like Owens should have been called for stalling. One thing to consider is that this happened thirty plus years ago. The sport has been growing more and more each year. Now days the athletes have all the knowledge from our predecessors and adding more to it. I think all competitive sports are more advanced technically and strategically.

  • @jcalhoun421991 rules were different back then weren't they?

  • @jcalhoun421991 are you retared this guy was never scored on in the Olympics and has lost one match his entire life!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • deathrisen6 i think ur talking about freestyle/greco.

  • no i was replying to tommymobleys comment and making a guess, now thats the rule in freestyle and greco but i was guessing that back then same rule was there but for folkstyle wrestling

  • flee call

  • Dan just got done doing a camp at our school in Chandler, Arizona. I spent 4 hours with the man. Learned nice moves!

  • gable is the greatest of all time hands down but anyone can be beat and larry came in with the determination to win he simply wanted it more than gable did he deserved the victory u shouldnt try to take anything away from the guy gable lost thats life

  • larry got lucky.....Gable just wasn't in the zone at the time thats y he lost.......Gable was and is still the best wrestler of all time

  • Gable looked very powerful, but 'emotionally tired', while Owings never quite taking chances and scrambling for his life to stay with the unbeatable Gable. Gable in his book says it was this loss that propelled him to work harder to become the eventual 1972 gold medalist. Gable wrote that this loss along with a knee injury made him BETTER and able to win gold.

  • WOW - Whata match. Larry Owings earned it. Dan never could turn him over on his back in the 3rd.

It was a sad day, however, it does teach kids that no matter how good you are, there will be someone who can beat you.

  • at 5;30 to 6:00 gable has Owings in armbar and ALMOST turns him, I don't know how Owings was able to stop Gables devastating arm bar but he did, and then in 3rd period, Owings takedown and VERY briefly Gable was on his back, it's been said that the ref gave Owings the 2 back points too quickly. So the match could have gone either way, but even to this day, this is one of the most famous matches in American wrestling history.

  • Actually you see the ref stroking out his near fall to indicate Gable was in near fall criteria. I'm surprised you don't see Iowa's head coach making a stink of it. you can bet neither were too thrilled about. That match was meant to be. It gave Gable even more motivation (like he needed anymore since he was a traing maniac) to do something even more outstanding with his performance in the Olympics.

  • sadest day in wrestling history

  • This man was the first wrestler I ever heard of, that loss changed his life forever and I'm sure for the better.

  • The award ceremony, as depicted in a Sports Illustrated story, was emotional. As Gable stepped forward to accept his medal, then stepped back on his pedastel, and couldn't raise his head from his chest. The fans ,as one , rose in tribute, applauding. After two minutes plus, it continued and Gable raised his head from his chest and looked straight ahead, with dignity. Still remember the story to this day.

  • he choked on the pressure of being the best

  • I know Him

    I have like 6 autographs

    His friend Knows my dad

  • saddest thing ever

  • gable barely lost. at 1 point i thought the guy in the dark singlet was dan. that was a gooooood match. even a jiu-jitsu guy like me is feelin that

  • @RDbushi 13 - 11 is high as shit for a college match especially since most matches are a 3 - 2 decision AND this is the finals. i wouldnt say that gable barely lost

  • give larry some credit...this is the giants beating the 18-0 patriots.....times 10000!!! larry didnt believe the hype or give gable any slack he was guna make him earn the title and gable wasnt expecting that...sad story for gable yes...but i bet u it changed his life forever for the good. never count anybody out. Anything is possible.

  • the best never lose

    the greats

    lose ones ....

this man will always live in the sport of wrestling

  • he lost because he was signing autographs before the match...

  • he lost because he was so worried about owings cradle that he did something he tought he'd never do and that was not force his style owings came out and forced his and gable let him it dosnt matter anyway gable beat him at the olympic trials

  • i did hear that, i think in an interview with gable on youtube. but its not the reason. it just contributed to why he lost.

  • this video makes me pissed off and sad that this was Gables only defeat... =(

  • and by the way, hulk hogan is cool and all but hes fat and fake. Dan Gable is at least 759 times better than hulk hogan

  • iwould say 760 times better

  • I hate watching this match

  • see! where the video messes up at like 4:00? thats when armed men came in and beat up gable then gave him the old poison dart. i always knew this match was suspect...

  • well ya.. thats the only way he could possibly lose

  • one of the sadest days in wrestling history

  • I wonder what made dan gable panic in his last match of his undefeated streak

  • he didnt so much panic. owings pushed himself to the point where he was basicly gable #2 plus he wanted revenge after gable humiliated him at a freestyle tournament a year before

  • its a good match nd stuff but i dont like to watch people like dan gable finally get beaten

  • every champion gets beated one way or another sometimes, deal with it.

  • 342056 has to be the biggest retard on the planet

  • Hey, 342056, little boy, WWF is choreographed. It's staged, you know...FAKE. I know it's like telling a child that there is no Santa Clause but you had to find out eventually.

  • how the hell can you even compare Dan Gable to Hulk Hogan when they arent even in the same dam sport.

It would be like motocross vs BMX.

WWF is fake wrestling for the cameras btw.

  • are you retarded

wwf is the stuff they do when they cant make the football team dumbass

  • this is real as real gets

  • all i know is that if u wrestled dan gable he wud rape u so bad u wud never be able to look ur father in the eye again for the rest of your pathetic life

  • lol. how come they dont have any videos of dan gable wining ?

  • because when you are a champion the only event that is exciting for people is the one you lose in

  • dan gable went to high school i go

    west high

  • i recently read a season on the mat which is about gables last season as a coach and it said that owings out "gabled" gable meaning he made gable wrestle his style plus owings was pinning everyone that year with a cradle so thats all gable thought about and owings and gable had wrestled once before and gable kicked his ass up and down the mat which gave owings extra motivation fourtunatly for gable he got another shot at owings at a freestyle tournament and beat his ass

  • Wow, one of the best historial sports videos I've seen on the internet. I've seen pictures of Gable crying on the awards stand after losing to Owings, but it is incredible to see this on video. Thanks for posting this!

  • which one is which?
