What about slow ride practice? Starting day one, 3 1/2 years ago, I've been in the parking lot every riding day working on this stuff and getting better at it too but I wasn't wasn't doing any balance practice until last Spring. 8 months of THAT is changing everything.
On-duty motor police have 1/10 the fatalities of civilians per registered vehicle. I'll take those odds. Riding as well as the average motor cop is realistic for anyone because--we have more time to practice.
I bought this video almost two years ago at a bike rally after watching your live demonstration. I had been riding for about 10 years, and I had a lot to learn. This was the best 20 bucks I ever spent! I highly recommend this video for any rider of any skill level.
Got RLAP V and its the best motorcycling investment I've ever made. Been riding 30 years, which means I have one year riding experience and 29 years repeating the same mistakes (got that from RLAP, and it's so true). Practicing this stuff is tough. My left hand wears out after 10 minutes and I need a break. I also find it alot easier to make sharp turns to the left, I have no idea why. I like being able to ride circles around young guys riding bikes half the weight of mine.
@gnrands50.. I'm in the same boat as you, a lot of years making the same mistakes over and over. I keep trawling Jerry's video clips and I can't believe how much I've learned, just doing that.I have even printed out a lot of material to take to work with me in the truck, and I take every opportunity to catch up on a bit more knowledge.I will get his book soon.I want the DVD's too, but will they play in Australia ? He really is awesome.I just can't get enough of his tips. Incredible !
Ride Like a Pro V DVD and book is my birthday gift from my parents, I'm looking forward to getting the skills, to get the confidence, to handle my bike the way I should. Just these little bit's you've put up have helps areas of how I handle it at low speeds.
Thanks for posting great info like this for the novice. Props to you not only for being a cop, but for taking even more time out to try and educate new riders!
how about a bike set realy high it full dresser Harley this thing set high im serous havey very havey front end. 86 FLT C.C . im going to try to get you dvd do you have class in colorado springs area
That's the reason I make these dvd's. So anyone who ride's a motorcycle can ride like the Cop's. Check out Stephenie learns to ride, on my web site. It's free and shows even little girls can ride like the Cop's.
Just recently I saw some cops (san francisco) do some very nifty riding while escorting the President. it looked like they were riding 250s (harley road kings i think). I ride a slightly smaller cruiser, but couldn't do what i saw. i "you tubed" "ride like a cop" and i stumbled on these videos. ordered this DVD on the website.. hope it helps.
I just watched this video with my wife and teenage son. The sound is FINE on the actual DVD and the information is just wonderful. What may be the MOST useful is the way the Motorman teaches you to use your head and eyes. Get the video and try it. You'll see how proper use of head and eye INSTANTLY makes you a better rider.
hi there, has a complete novice on a motorcycle, how do I get hold of the Vidio, has what I have seen so far is well worth paying for. thanks tourer35
It doesn't matter what size the bike is, the dip makes U-turns, as well as all low speed maneuvers much easier. We have an MSF class also, but they won't let us tell students about the dip. MSF is great for beginners. Motor Officer training turns out professional riders.
I took the Basic Course offered by Harley Davidson and developed by the MSF (Motorcycle Saftey Foundation). We weren't taught our u-turns this way. The teachers taught us to stay out side, half clutch to keep speed up, and cut in either left or right depending on turn. If we were taught the dip, that probably would have helped out. Although we were using Buell Blast's at 340 lbs, not a 600+lbs bike like yours. I can see how the larger bikes would require a dip to make the turn.
I took his class 2 years ago, looks like the same parking lot we used. The class is only 5 hours but it's not easy. But by the end if you listen to him, you'll be a better rider for sure. The best part was the end when we went through the course in a long line over and over again... sweet!
Hi Jerry i see your videos are great, im a mexican motorpatrol and i buy a pair of motor boots i see that you use a different boot (chippewa or Harley?) you recommend a pair of this boot or buy the "classic" Dehner boots? before i buy your DVD and translate to my partners here.
I have to be careful when I do U-turns on my vulcan 900 cuase the handle bars will hit my knees, 6ft5 LOL apehangers would actually be more of a normal handlebar for me, I was pract. u-turns and my knee hit the front brake and I almost dropped it though. first bike, but gotta practice
how close do you figure the bike is to sliding out on these manouvers? that's always my concern when leaning the bike over. How much sand or gravel could the bike maintain traction on when leaned way over on the floor boards do you figure?
First of all, you wouldn't be doing these maneuvers on sand or gravel. That's why you're always scanning the road ahead of your bike, you would never want to lean your bike on sand/gravel.
I agree, but there is always some sand or gravel bits around the edges of roads, so if you have the bike leaned over and commited to a U turn, and then hit a little dusting of pebbles... I guess it's something you'ld get more confident with practice.
Wish yous guys offered a supplement video to build on whatever video a rider currently has. I have volume 4 and love it, and am excited that volume 5 is available, but I wish yous guys had a video of just the new things that have been added or changed since volume 4.
Keep rocking... btw -- We would LOVE to see more goldwings used as many of the wingers are intimidated by the exercises and the do not realize that the wings can do the same tight drills.

@orinaccio No, there are no subtitles on my RLAP V DVD, that is why I wrote my Ride Like a Pro, The Book. You can buy it online at my website

In this video from 4:40 - It doesn't look as though the rider is turning her head... looks as though she is looking straight on?
npickard 10 months ago
@npickard both ladies are turning their head and eyes, watch it again. If they were looking straight on, they would have run out of the exercises.

Does this work for sport bikes as well? The lean angle for slower turns doesn't as forgiving as with a cruiser.

@Styxorcist yes, if it has two wheels, the techniques work. My son rides his sport bike through the course in my RLAP V DVD.

of course. Yes, with your training, you are able to see that there is sand/gravel ahead of your bike. It's all about the practice. That's the key.
