I bought a cassette of S.O. with this song in it in May 27, 1987 in Davao city. Philippines, like it was yesterday with pictures in mind.. Still have the tape it hisses a bit now i guess
For anyone wondering what happened to SO, check out THE OPPOSITION or OPPOSITION. This is Marcus Bell and Mark Long's original group before they left for the SO project. Amazon has the cd(s). There is a link that enables you to listen to 4 of thier songs.
First heard this song from the LIVING IN OBLIVION compilation . . loved it ! ! Spent some time looking for the cd and could not find it . . until I went to Alaska and found it in a mom and pop music store for $5.00. Thank god for LIVING IN OBLIVION. Whomever put those cds together should get an emmy for the best music, even if it is a compilation. They did a great job and putting together a true 80s music compilation, the best compilation sets that I own, hands down ! !
They were a good, solid band who seemed to be on the right track. A shame that they were terribly underrated! But I was 23, and I remember them. I will always remember "Are You Sure?"
Damn, I wish you would've posted this sooner. Back in '08, I drove myself crazy trying to find this when I was making compilation discs of my fave new wave songs. Ultimately, I made around 32 discs and this was not on any of them...and it's one of my very favorite cuts. Thankfully, I got it in '09 when my husband and I hooked up. He had it in his music library. What's a collection of new wave compilation discs without "Are You Sure?"
Unfortanately for the band "SO" - they sounded too much like Simple Minds and were likely disregarded for that reason - but I think this song is as good as any Simple Minds songs (whose best song ironically was not written by them "Don't you forget about Me") and the entire album "Horseshoe in the Glove" is excellent.
@PSucher Ooh, I'm gonna have to seriously disagree with you on that one. Not about this song being as good as any "Simple Minds" song (because I think it probably is) but "Don't You Forget About Me" being their best song. It was definitely by far their biggest hit, in fact, it was their only hit, but what about "Alive and Kicking" or "All the Things She Said." Those 2 are by far my favorite SM tunes. Hell, I even like "Sanctify Yourself" and "Promised you a Miracle" better than DYFAM.
"Little pockets of ignorance, He leaves the plastic on the seat of his car"
I loved this when it came out, played it to death ever since but now I feel slightly humbled to realise I ain't the only one who loved it. I am just glad to be part of a cult!
i think infodisco is banned but i need to double check. he had an awesome selection of music. i wish satellite radio had the variety some of the youtubers like infodisco have.
you made an exceptional song and a really cool video so you did your part. when i think of all the trash MTV played even in 1988 it confounds me this cool video was seen only during the spring of 1988.
that's a cool look 3:20 to 3:22. i wish you would have done a follow up shortly after this 1988 album because it is awesome.
been waiting over 22 years to see this again. not sure if this is the video i saw on mtv. i thought they were lined up one behind the other in a diagonal line all singing together at one point during the video but i could be wrong.
i had money to buy music in 1988 and i regret not buying this album and also not making an effort to find it at a record store near a college that always carries more of a selection of music. i don't think i even saw the cassette single for this.
Great to see the video. I had this on 12" vinyl. think it made the top 40 in 1988, but I maybe wrong on that. A great track! Thanks for posting manulovapop
This is one of the most hard to find videos in the history of 80's music. As far as I know this is the only SO video available in the web until now. Ironically this group was SO underrated back in the 80s and they never got the attention that they really deserved. "Are you sure" is a very solid track, with great lirycs and good arrangements. Thanks for the post.
you are right, this was an awesome song and the whole album is good. i wish i would have bought it in 1988 instead of 2008. now i have about 6 of these cds.
@drheino "So" is the definition of a one hit wonder, nothing they recorded came near this song. "Are You Sure" reminds me of many other 80s artists; Simple Minds, Tears for Fears, Peter Gabriel to name a few. I absolutely love this obscure 80s gem, although on a critical level it's a bit 'over the top' the last minute. Cheers for a great post, I always was aware of this song but up til now, had not seen the video.
Saw them open for either the Hooters or Icehouse in the late 80's. GREAT show! I love this entire album. Would you die for me???
