I just talked about this with a Deaf friend. I do not believe ASL requires it's signers to be tight lipped however. It's painful to me when I watch new signers *trying* to keep their mouths closed, often so tight and unnatural. Deaf use their mouths with facial expressions. Not mouthing the words true, but part of ASL's grammar is mouthing some and some mouth morphemes such as "pah" "fsh" and "puh" so i think a balance should be taught, not a fear of opening their mouths, teach correct ways..
haha, it is so hard not to talk when learning to sign. But water? I'd probably drink it all and then up leaving for the rest room 5 million times durring class!
