@SirComment33 Circle picking is more economic than economy picking. It saves you the trouble of moving your wrist completely and settles for one precise movement. It's arguably the hardest picking technique out there are there are very scarce amounts of players who use it to prove it. Economy picking implies that your pick moves the same motion as the string you're about to hit. For example, from E to A connects with a down stroke. Circle picking combines that in a tight movement.
Great video! keep up the good work. Btw just a thing i have noticed: on those licks after 0:20 its impossible to get the timing right, unless you strictly use alternate picking. i know its tempting to sweep two adjacent notes with downstrokes, but it breaks the rythm in this kind of lick.
@infectionsman Thanks for watching! Actually that lick at 0:20 i played it strictly alternate picking, but i can't still crosspick keeping the notes even...still practicing to get there though
hey man, it's taken ages for me to find a video where someone has shown circle picking! ever since i've seen takayoshi ohmura circle pick about a year or so ago i've been wanting to do it. i've also noticed yngwie malmsteen and michael romeo pick like it, so dude, please explain the best you can to me how you do it. i've tried at home and i really can't do it! help will be MUCH appreciated. inbox me if you wish! cheers in advance man!
@555ShadowStar666 Hi, thanks for the input. To explain the way i pick is kinda hard, which is why I recorded this video at the first place. I could say that i don't pick exactly like Takayoshi Ohmura (i wish though). The main motion is executed by the index finger and thumb and not a circular motion, but upward and downward. I use a little wrist movement also, especially to accent so i can stay in time. And I don't anchor my pinky as a pivot point.
@fcbtim Thanks!. Is kind of hard to explain it with letters, but basically i just move my thumb and index finger for the main picking motion and with little movement of the wrist to cross pick, sometimes to accent.
Check out Takayoshi Ohmura, his picking technique is similar to mine, circle picking also, but way more advanced.
@scrapethebottom Hahahaha, I gonna take your first comment as a compliment. Of course is not speed up, because if you haven't notice yet, i'm not playing that fast. That must be like 16th notes at 170-180 bpm. Besides, if the video were speed up, the picking motion would be wide and fast. In my video, i keep the motion as minimal, because to play fast, you don't move faster you wrist or fingers, you just move it less (efficiency of motion). I invite you to watch it again.
@GuyJamesGuitarist Is a great video if you don't have a good routine of exercises developed already. The best thing is that he give you the basics or principles for practicing any licks or exercises. Then i use his method of practicing with the licks of Intense Rock by Paul Gilbert.
Am I the only one who thinks this is economy picking?

when i try circular picking, i feel like the pick constantly slips or you have to constantly adjust the pick back into position..
great vid but can you explain what your doing? it literally looks like you arent even playing anything at all with the pick LOL

Really great playing! Do you use both your thumb and index or just the thumb to move the pick? Looks like mostly thumb, am I wrong?
martinsvard89 10 months ago
@martinsvard89 Thanks man! I use thumb and index movement and sometimes, especially to accent, a little wrist motion is involved.
