Redhat isn't endeavoring, with any sincerity, to build some really great desktop system - either through Redhat or The Fedora Project. A long time ago, and with no apologies, they set their sites on becoming the premiere Linux server distribution and making a lot of money. They've achieved both goals. It's not as if this is breaking news. And, Redhat/Fedora distros are extremely stable, though "clunky" as desktops for a lot of users. They're only pretending to even be in the desktop "game".
I downloaded it yesterday because it looked very nice and I'm not altogether happy with the Unity thing in Ubuntu. The live CD and Live USB tend to hang and I'm boggled that they haven't included an option to restart or shutdown the computer by default.
At first I agreed with this review very much, after having only tired Fedora in Virtualbox (somehow managed to get the guest additions to work). But a few weeks ago I "accidentally" installed F15 on a new laptop, and once I started to actually use it day to day, I found I really liked it very much. I've never used Fedora before, but at the moment I don't see myself going back. ATM I'm even considering putting it on more boxes. Maybe post-release updates have just really improved F15 that much.

i think Fedora is the best looking Distro. But nothing in it Works correctly. its very Pretty but its a total piece of crap. ;-) I Like Pardus personally.
@invnd1987 "even Ubuntu?" While not being the most suitable distribution for power users, one should have be stone cold blind to despise Ubuntu a.k.a the flagship and user procurer of the gnu/linux community, like that.
Listening to you guys go back and forth about who's better has indeed been entertaining. I appreciate the work going behind Linux; these guys are tough to listen to. Fedora 15 works like a charm for me. Snappy, without issues. I suspect trolls or people that have no idea how to manage the system; which isn't tough. Thank you for Fedora 15. Gnome 3 is smooth.
Im not saying i love fedora but, ive been a linux user for only a couple of months, i started off with Ubuntu 10.10 and it ran nice, i updated to Natty and it wasnt working, it was really slow it would crash and idk i didnt like it, then i decided to try Fedora and im using it right now, flash runs faster than in ubuntu, i like how the update manager updates everything, the disk thing did bother the shit out of me, but overall it was and is ok, i hated that it didnt come with Flash and mp3.
I don't get this review... I'm using Fedora 15 and I couldn't be happier... I haven't seen any of those issues actually in ubuntu I can't control brightness with the keyboar (in fedora I can). As for wireless I just need to add the rpmfusion repos and voila.
@arayshine: "fedora 15 is way better than ubuntu 11.04 and even ubuntu 10.10..." Don't make me laugh! Fedora 15 isn't even close to Ubuntu 10.10 or Ubuntu 11.04. Ubuntu destroys Fedora in terms of performance, usability, and much more!
I haven't really used Fedora much, but I've been using the spin xfce with versions 14 and 15 along with Xubuntu 11.04 and Windows XP on my mini toshiba netbood. So far, so good.
Thanks for these videos guys. I've just started playing around with Linux in earnest using Kubuntu. Not sure if that says anything but I like it lol. Anyways, loved the video. Thanks for being objective. Appreciate the work!
@MrSimpleblue We both ran the beta's for weeks, and the final version the minute it was released.
I explained IN THE REVIEW that I wanted to have a live box to show, but there installer falls apart if you use a VM, since it lacks 3D support without the additions installed, which can not be installed until after the OS is installed.
@jupiterbroadcasting Really? is that your excuse? So Fedora should ship with VM Drives too? Also, the "fallback-mode" is still GNOME3 but in FALLBACK-MODE And the comment about flash not installing while it said it was installed, the YUM version only installs the repo info not the plugin, and that is at adobe's design not fedora then you can install AND get updates to flash-plugin when you do a software update. Your lack of knowledge on linux comes to surface when you make comments like that!

@jupiterbroadcasting I remember when you were talking about Ubuntu 11.04, one of you told that installing Ubuntu in a first month is begging for trouble, but now you are bashing Fedora that it has some raw edges after release. You are just trolls and simple Fedora haters. Probably Lodsys would like to hire you.
I'm an avid windows user, but I love seeing what Linux has to offer. Chris and Brain have always been bang on when it comes to "what a new Linux user will think". This is the third Fedora review I've seen and they always hammer them. Considering how right they are on the other distro's, Fedor 15 must be pure camel dung!! Great show guys! Loved it :)
I think fedora 15 with gnome 3 is grate but there is some bugs but its fast and grate for a bit nerdier audience not so much for new users ecspicially new users comming from windows
I have no problem with Fedora. Well F9 was pretty buggy for me, but from 12 it works perfectly. I never use GUI update tools and didn't notice multiple soft updates, well it's no big deal it's useless anyway. When I tried OpenSuse 11,4 this crap asked me to downgrade gstreamer in update and kept back Kaffeine from updating at all. Ha ha that was osom. Downgrading updates. Priceless, huh?
I have given up trying Fedora because it always sucked... doesn't deserve its place in the top 5 Linux distros and its getting more attention these days because it comes with Gnome 3. Hopefully this kind of attention will be short lived when those people find other distros with a better implementation of Gnome 3.
Can't say I noticed the update/updates issue on my F15 install before I deleted it..... I didn't have the flash/codecs problem as I used FedoraPlus to install flash and codecs etc without problems..... But You are right in the fact that Fedora feels like they don't care... they don't go out of their way to provide a good user experience... They seem to care more about implementing latest foss technology and dumping it in fedora as a testbed for redhat without really paying attention to detail

I have NO CLUE What Chris and the J-Man were talking about. I have had NO PROBLEMS! ZERO! ZILCH! With Fedora. Everything so far is flawless. The installer was flawless, no error messages to speak of, wireless INSTANTLY WORKED, all the codecs WORK BEAUTIFULLY even FLASH! The only gripe I had
was the Icon theme. But of course that's Gnome's fault... Just installed Gsettings Tool and changed it to Clarity. IT"S A GLOVE FIT IN APPEARANCE!!! Beautiful!
Fedora is for testing and Linux geeks, do a review on RHEL 6 Desktop edition -via an Evaluation...please. Again please do a RHEL 6 Desktop review. Thanks guys.
redhat desktop whent downhill after redhat decided to make it a red headed step child distro. i rember the redhat 9 days when they acully shipped a desktop distro and it was epic.
I don't know how many times I have tried to install this system - ALWAYS ended up crashing that I eventually gave up and found Ubuntu (to switch to Mint just recently). I might give it another chance, but this time in Virtualbox...
I tried Fedora 15 last night, and you have basically been describing my experience. Sadly I had most of the issues you had and it took me a few hours just to get it functioning semi decently. Sure, it's not hard to find info on most of the fixes, but I for one would like to spend my time doing something else. It's 2011 and distros should work out of the box, unless otherwise is specifically stated and desired.
i Vote for Pardus being the number one Distro. its young not well known and has small repos and yes it Lacks because of the small software support for it. but the OS itself it Flawless. The repose have new software added to them all teh time as it evolves. its still young. i have never been a fanboy about anything in My life but this Distro is turning Me into one. its just Great. also comes with its own USB iso installer. great for netbook owners :-)
@blackoutworm Well its KDE only and it has small repos. but it is Much More hardware and Driver compatible then Mint or PinguyOS. it dose not have native .deb or .rpm support but it can convert .rpm packages automatically to work using Pisi. it uses tar.gz as its primary but converts .rpm into tar.gz automatically. if you don't like KDE then its not for you. but if you Like KDE then it is the best choice in My opinion. even better then openSUSE. :-) Gnome will be available soon for it.
@MrGizmo757 Oh too bad. I don't know how to install from tar.gz archives. That's why I like the deb and rpm concept. It installs things fast, and you don't have to run all the geeky scripts every time.
@blackoutworm i think you can install a dpkg manager for it. but the problem i have with that just like every other KDE distro i ever used. is that software not installed from the repositories often end up with broken dependencies and stop working. i have had that happen in many KDE distros. i think it has something to do with QT. but all the software i use is in the repository anyways so its not an issue for me in this case. the apps that are not can be installed by adding more sources.
@Hermetiqa Yeah Kate is better than gedit by almost any measure. Both are totally unusable as a real editor for programming or in comparison to Vim but still... gedit isn't that great. No idea why Bryan loves it so much. I haven't found a good graphical editor.
@Hermetiqa Naturally :). There's also Pida. IMO there are more advantages to being able to run it in a terminal than the few extra features in gvim. I disable most of the menus in gvimrc to save space anyway.
Hey Chris, Didn't hear you mention Debian for anything. Is it good for anything? What do you normally use when you set up a companies with server(any kind)?
At my University, which i am a Computer Science Student, the first and only linux distro we have been shown is Fedora 11 :D We are actually forced to use it.
and yes, im sorry for a double post!!! just had alot of input: but i totally agree, fedora is doing a double take (or whatever the phrase it) and claiming one thing (easy desktop) when they actually are a geek/hardcore distro to a major extent. if they did not CLAIM that i would be completely fine with what they do, because that is what they are: a testbed for Redhat. and im ok with that, just do not claim what you are not! im dont :P...sorry lol! thank you for all you do Jupiterbroadcasting!!
honestly, my opinion is: Fedora is an upstream distro much like debian is to ubuntu. i would not recomend debian to anyone unless they want older software and to have to install a bunch of extra stuff. i see fedora and open suse sorta the same (i know they are not that way, just for metaphor purposes!!!), in that i would not recommend fedora to a new user. personaly i use fedora and it is not that bad for me. but i do love watching you guys to get a laugh!! awesome review tho!!

Hey Chris, Didn't hear you mention Debian for anything. Is it good for anything? What do you normally use when you set up a companies with server(any kind)?

and yes, im sorry for a double post!!! just had alot of input: but i totally agree, fedora is doing a double take (or whatever the phrase it) and claiming one thing (easy desktop) when they actually are a geek/hardcore distro to a major extent. if they did not CLAIM that i would be completely fine with what they do, because that is what they are: a testbed for Redhat. and im ok with that, just do not claim what you are not! im dont :P...sorry lol! thank you for all you do Jupiterbroadcasting!!

honestly, my opinion is: Fedora is an upstream distro much like debian is to ubuntu. i would not recomend debian to anyone unless they want older software and to have to install a bunch of extra stuff. i see fedora and open suse sorta the same (i know they are not that way, just for metaphor purposes!!!), in that i would not recommend fedora to a new user. personaly i use fedora and it is not that bad for me. but i do love watching you guys to get a laugh!! awesome review tho!!
