Dave was a kind of blue collar genius...----when he played 6 nights a week in Seattle I was always amazed at how many of the "hippest" jazzers were there...and they didn't leave after a single set!
In the 70's I was performing with my trio in Cape Cod, Dave was also playing there but got off eariler than me and would come by my place and sit in and I'd sing with him playing. Of all the pianists you always knew when you when you heard Dave. His style was his own. We became close friends and I miss him to this day. A big burly guy that one would never expect to hear such music from.
Hi DM fans, I invite you to view a wonderful master class on the music of Dave McKenna. Free, entertaining and VERY educational:) To view, type in "Dave Frank" McKenna on Youtube. You vill enjoy it!
Ahh....so nice to hear Dave again. If I close my eyes I'm almost back at the Copley twenty years ago. As a piano player, Dave's stuff was always particularly appealing to me. Choice changes, that left hand, so perfect whether walking, comping, or pumping out those four to the bar figures, the right hand runs and his gorgeous phrasing
I recall seeing him walking down Comm Ave after Red Sox games in the mid 80s. Even if the Sox had played poorly that day, Dave never did. He was always right on!
I have a a recording I taped in 1987 of Dave playing at the Sydney Hilton Hotel AUSTRALIA...I was sittng in the front row...it has crowd & room sounds in the background so maybe not as good as these recording on you tube...
what a great tribute to Dave McKenna...just love hearing hime again. Use to see this fine gentleman on Cape Cod....fell in love with his driving, sensitive, swinging, and thematic stylings......you are so missed Dave!!!
Man, RIP Dave...One of my very favorite piano players of any genre. His incredible sense of time, his ability to swing his ass off, and his wonderful dynamics. His music will continue to please the rest of us, thank GOD!

My friend Myron Jones said, "He looks more like the guy that would move the piano than the guy who plays the piano, but he swings like crazy."
Songs: 1) My Funny Valentine, 2) Blue Moon. I don't recognize the third one. 4) The Lady is a Tramp, 5) the start of Have You Met Miss Jones?
