@GreenEggsAndHamster a lot of japanese were brought up to believe that the biggest huntsman spiders are spider gods and therefore shouldn't be harmed. they also consider seeing one to be lucky... when i saw my first one a few days after coming to japan (it appeared on the floor a few feet from where i was standing), i was all set to squash it, but before i could find something it scooted under my bed...
As a toddler, my mom's freakout factor affected my fear of insects and spiders. When scary things appear, it's best the man and/or the woman show fearlessness where there is no real fear. Now, I welcome non-poisonous spiders in the house as they kill other insects. They're like free exterminators.
@PTZ72 absolutely... all in the mind. and you're bang on about their usefulness... hand-sized monsters like the one in the video eat cockroaches, which can only be a good thing!
