  • It is actually a very well done and accurate film of the early occupation of the Philippines.

  • CAN'T BELIEVE THAT DANE DEHAAN WAS A PART OF THIS FILM. OMG! I LOVE HIM. I need to see this. But where can I download??

  • himm I remember Filipino-American movie too around 2005-2006? I think it was better than this "The Great Raid" more into rescuing American POW just before the end of WWII

  • is dane dehaan here?! omigosh.

  • astig...

  • Well thank God for white guilt, otherwise they'd never sell a copy.

  • where can i download this movie???

  • spanish-american war declared in 1898, is so belonging to the turn of the 19th century.

philippine-american war was declared in 1901, is so belonging to the turn of 20th century.

just to make it clear. and so the movie was narrated at the beginning alright.

  • @kalakian

wrong dude. when you say "turn of the century" that means the first years of the new century. the spanish american war was declared in the year 1898... this is not the turn of the 19th century. it is the LATE 19th century. that should have been the correct term.

  • The movie introduction was about the Spanish-American war conflict in 1898 so it was accurately said as the turn of the 19th century regarding the latter war and not the american-philippine war. Ofcourse the philippine-american war was therefore belonging to the turn of the 20th century.

  • SO WANT TO WATCH D:

  • want to watch, cant find ANYWHERE

  • nobody fucks around with Burt Chance

  • where can i watch/download this movie?

  • The movie trailer looks amazing! Can't wait to watch this.

  • i wana watch this

  • The "turn of the 19th Century" would be 1800, NOT 1900 for Christ's sake! How the hell wasn't this caught and why hasn't it been fixed?

This is such an important story to tell and this trailer flubs it up with stupid oversight.

  • @NurseCentral hey sherlock it was 1898 when usa declared war with spain.listen up carefully and dont be such a jackass!

  • Did I just see bamboo waterboarding? O_O

  • @yunalenne that's what you call 'water cure'

  • They should also make "Battle of Taraca" into a movie... where 200 Moro warriors died defending the Fort of - Moro leader Datu Ampuanagus - against the American forces... in the Phil-American war of Lanao Del Sur... or the Juramentado's of Zamboanga.. or about the " Moro Rebellion " of 1899-1903... just imagine guns against "Moro Kali Warriors"...

  • does anyone know if the dvd is available for purchase anywhere?

  • like if mr desiano sent you here

  • xDDD I wish there are more movies about the Philippines and America. <333 HETALIA 4EVER. :D

  • well, this is for educational purposes only according to my moderator... sorry to tell you that..

  • i love it.. looking 4ward 2 watch it.. :)

  • I hate the narration about at the beginning of the 19th century. It was near the beginning of the 20th century!

  • @jmdarcega: They (Macabebe) are considered traitors for siding with the US during the Philippine-American War because Gen. Luna burned down the whole Macabebe Town. Now most Macabebe Veterans are being taken care off of the US Goverment and a lot of thier sons served with the Philippine Scouts and fought through out ww2. and residing here in the US. What about you guys!

  • That was the first movie of the Philippine - American war i like it!! :-)

  • @carlzpinoyako

There have been a few already. Silent movies and talkies. Prior to this, the latest was "Sakay" (1993).

  • Oh great, another international film about unggoys. Another reason to shout proud to be pinoy. hehe

  • nakaka inis yung ending naman!!! tanga yung anak ni amigo.

  • Yap! My grandfather were Macabebe Scouts during that period served with Lawton and Funston. The Bustos and Lacanlale Clans! Alah Eh!

  • @r2ro43 the Macabebe scouts are traitors...look it up.

  • @jmdarcega Yeah, so is Aguinaldo. Now shush

  • @milon4231 oh really?

  • This film should have been made by someone who was actually Filipino who can communicate a more Philippine perspective of it, not to mention the ACTUAL OPPRESSION AND UPRISING REVOLUTION HAPPENING TODAY IN THE PHILIPPINES.

  • @jerms910 This trailer was made for the American audience in mind. There was a trailer for the Filipino audience. Having seen the movie, I can say that this is fairly balanced. Not too Filipino or American centric.

  • Comment removed

  • fuckin gringos

  • I just wish the director had had a bigger budged for this film.

  • I was born in the Philippines, my mother is Visayan (Leyte) and I was raised here in the U.S. This is A movie that I would love to see as it is a story that is based on actual events but is little known. Unfortunately due to where I live (AZ) there isn't A very big Filipino community like in LA or NY. Recently within the past few years I've seen Filipino restaurants starting to pop up, Hopefully I can find it on DVD somewhere or someone can hook me up. SALAMAT

  • It should be at the turn of the 20th century.

  • @emsiipi if u live in socal theres a showing at cerritos town center :D

  • someone needs to do the Puerto Rico version!

  • @redeye101 ive been saying that also for the past 8 years lol

  • @redeye101 that's right! Puerto Rico shares a common history with us. i'd love to hear it too.

  • Look's amazing. What else can i tell you. If the frist film from this director is anything to go by, this new film is going to be great. I will look for it on sitemoovis.co.cc. Peace and much love.

  • Those 13 dislikes are fucking ass rude to the Philippine culture....this was based on a true story so fuck off

  • wow bigatin ang manga artistang pinoy sa film na ito sana manuod kayu hindi para suportaan ang hollywood films pero para sa mga actors natin LOL

  • I was able to watch Amigo here in the Philippines. Sadly very few Filipinos bothered to watch this film. I think we were less than 10 people inside the cinema. The Philippine American War is being treated as just a minor skirmish between the Americans and the Filipinos under the more studied Spanish-American War. The movie did its best to be balanced. The Americans are not necessarily evil here. Guess who were portrayed as the rotten group? The Spaniards! I'm not surprised.

  • I am proud that this movie has been made. So many people forget the US role in the Philippines then and now.

  • @FeralBurn87 what that the white man raped and pillaged this country as well

  • @thefrenchdip Exactly. So many movies are made that portray the "great accomplishments" of the US but easily forget the atrocities that occur then and now. The influence the US has had and continues to have in the Philippines in a sense hinders the cultural identity of a people that have been torn apart by "the white man".

  • Finally a movie about the forgotten war that you will never read in the history books

  • what about when filipinos were kidnapped from their villages only to be brought in as sideshow exhibits in the St. Louis State Fair?

  • this movie makes me hate whites even more..they should stay away from asia.. these fucking idiots killed my ancestors in samar and i loathe them with all my fucking soul..

  • i hope u.s will apologize for there atrocities, close to 3 million filipinos died because of racist genocide by these people. japan already apologized, why cant america..it only means they will do it again..should these people be trusted?

  • Can anyone give me a link to download the full movie? PLEASE HURRY! THANKS.

  • Finally, the Americans will realize what they did to us, their Little Brown Brothers. We were their first Vietnam. The difference is they succeeded.

  • @wicked400m I didn't do anything =/

  • where/when can i watch this movie??

  • I am among those who discovered the suppressed truth about this war over 40 years ago, when the Philippines was in the headlines during Marcos' martial law. we were often targeted, labeled for having the audacity to speak about the start of US imperialism. The Philippines was known then as the first Vietnam because of military atrocities inflicted upon over a million Filipino casualties. War continues despite the lessons, the pain, the expense, the devastation ... the world will not survive.

  • the Sub made me lol.

    "What do you advice us?"

    "make no trouble"

it sounded like he said make trouble

  • remember that famous order, "kill everyone above 10" ?? yeah America was a butcher then

  • Indeed! 1898 - the beginning of the US Empire. As the new imperialist on the block - expropriating land, labor, markets, captial and natural resources of other countries at the expense of the working population of those countries - US helped itself to the Philippines, Guam, Cuba and Puerto Rico in the same year!!

  • America always invades other countries for its own incentives and when those people fight back to defend their country they are called rebels, terrorists, etc,, exactly like the movie "Avatar". Real life examples,, Invasion in Philippine, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq Now attacking with drone on border areas of Pakistan, Threats to Libya, Korea and Iran. People know who is real terrorist.

  • I'm currently doing a report on the History of Higher Education in the Philippines. It turns out that the US government during this period used education to "pacify" the Filipinos while making total war with the remaining revolutionaries. It's an unlikely combination but they did it. My dad once told me about the Balangiga Massacre that while Americans can be generous to other nations they can also be this brutal.

  • @hildegarde07 Americans can be generous, the government, well that's another story.

  • Is that a M1 garand rifle?

  • Putang Ina nyung mga macabebe

  • @CoJXP You should learn to read better. The conflict was not just filipino against U.S. There was in fighting between factions of filipino as well. Some of the atrocities were inflicted upon filipinos from other filipinos. The story is partly about that too.

  • i don't believe hundreds of thousands were massacred. There was no doubt massacres and there were many thousands who were overcome by horrible sickness and malnutrition while being detained in large camps. There was a war and unfortunately many innocents were caught up in it and suffered. But atrocities were committed by each side.

  • @TomNAA1 So according to you, defend your land, your family, your own life from aggressor is to commit atrocities??? You should learn to read better your own history man!!!

  • RONNIE LAZARO: Im getting too old for these sort of roles. Is there anything new? Like Hip-hop grandad from the ghettos or something?

  • Yap! That long hair Filipino Scout must be a Macabebe Scout! Mabuhay ang Macabebe!

  • It's good thing that American films aren't always portrayed as the good guys. Every superpower always wrote that they were the good guys and they single handily won the war without the Allies(WW2 and WW1 for example).

I hope into seeing this wonderful film :).

  • Finally, a movie about our history! Hope they make a Balangiga movie.

  • This is such a shameful part of American history but we must learn from this. It must be told. No society is perfect, none is immune from conflict. America needs to own up to its horrific past, both with the Philippines and the outright genocide that took place in our own country, especially California. 50 years before this took place, the US paid $5 for every Indian head settlers brought in, and all for gold. Humanity cannot move forward if it doesn't look back.

  • Several unnecessarily hateful comments here. All of us here NOW were born long after these issues passed. I learned about how people were hurt in the past when good friends spoke up. I learned Escrima from and lived with the best Filipino instructors in Stockton and the Bay Area, California, and have sent $50 per week to friends in the PI weekly when unemployed to people I have never met so please redirect your hate to doing something useful. We are all not as good as you, obviously.

  • I'm glad to see at least one movie that will likely be played in the US public school systems has semblance of historical reality in it. However, as far as cinematography I’m very disappointed with the wardrobe department’s job. All the militaries clothes look color saved Tide™ fresh. Any American walking through those jungles would be dirty and have sweat stains from the heat and humidity alone.

  • They also should make a film on the Balangiga Massacre that happen in Samar where the Americans took the Balangiga Bell and up to no is in their possession and the Philppines wants it back

  • FILIPINOS ARE NOT SPANISH FUCK!!

THEY ARE ASIAN, THOSE IN LATIN AMERICA HAVE SPANISH BLOOD BUT NOT THE ONES IN ASIA.

    JODER MIERDA!

  • @Dannieel92 uh read your history books. spain occupied us for 300 years.

  • @boloap yes, but that doesn't make spanish dirty asian.

  • @Dannieel92 have you been to the philippines ?

  • @boloap yes, 2 times.

  • @Dannieel92 then you should know that many of us are half breeds no thanks to your horny clergy.

  • @boloap even the ones that are 1% spanish or even 10% DONT LOOK EUROPEAN, NOT EVEN CLOSE TO A LATINO FROM LATIN AMERICA. YOU GUYS LOOK ASIAN.

COME TO SPAIN, AND YOU WILL PASS AS AN ASIAN.

  • @Dannieel92 wait, what the hell are you stressing yourself about ? this movie is about americans NOT spaniards. those white people in the movie are AMERICANS. sheesh you whiteys think so high of yourselves. no wonder the world hates you

  • @boloap you can speak, why? you are asian(filipino) haha

  • @boloap your hate knows no bounds. I think that it has prevented you from being friends with people who would have shown you a good time. Your ignorance with regard to the US tells me that you are not an American. Whites are a MINORITY and our president is BLACK. I give $50 per week to friends in the PI while I am unemployed, to people that I have never met to help them so that they may eat so please redirect your hate to doing something useful. We are all not as good as you, obviously.

  • @BlackSwanTactical didn't mean to offend. the spaniard called us "dirty asians". i didn't mean to generalize of course. my last comment was a knee jerk reaction to a racist comment. and i apologize.

  • @boloap Of course I accept your apology. I see the argument going on here and it is difficult, unhealthy because it gets too heated. Almost all the Filipinos that I have ever met are great people giving back to their community. Every time I chat with my friends via Magic-Jack in the PI or in chat my heart sheds many tears over their poverty and I wish that I could do more and maybe one day I will be able to. Hope to see you in the PI some day! Mabuhay.

  • @boloap Spaniards called Filipinos INDIOS - in loose term, monkeys.

  • @hundsfot666 Indio is actually Indian. Not monkey.

  • @willzurmacht you obviously did not study Philippine history. i said "in loose terms"......you're taking it literally.

  • @hundsfot666 I would not care if you're writing your own history. Thanks for noticing my comment.

  • @Dannieel92 - What is your problem? You sound very angry just because we don't look like a Spaniards. I don't care.I live in Queens NY. (I came to this country a job was waiting for me. I did not cross the border. I went to the US immigration.) No regrets. We Aseans are educated. Catholic was introduced by the Spaniards. Sucks. Corrupt. I would rather be Japanese. Japanese have the culture and sentiments. Dignity. Are your parents educated?

  • @innerhappiness my father is a successful lawyer, im actually studying english in canada.

so you can guess that i dont come from a poor family.

  • @Dannieel92 Filipino today cannot be considered as a race like the Japanese or the Han Chinese. There are Filipinos who are obviously doesn't look Asian at all. Enrique Iglesias' mother Isabel Preyler is considered as Filipino though she doesn't have an ounce of native Filipino blood in her. Filipinos of Basque origins are still dominant in business in our country. They are Filipinos as they've been living here for centuries. In the provinces they are still powerful figures in local politics.

  • @Dannieel92 I'm a Filipino and people mistake me for looking Latino some times :P

  • Comment removed

  • @ForeverandMoreJulia probably but not the common people, just the rich people.

  • @Dannieel92 LOL! go back to school and know your history stupid idiot :]

  • @Dannieel92 Good thing you know. I wonder why a lot of Filipinos claim they have Spanish blood. Even those who look like monkeys. That is ridiculous. Somebody just have to kill them.

  • @willzurmacht kinda right, but will you change the term "monkey" because its kinda offensive and racist.. but im telling you there are Filipinos with spanish bloods in our place and their quite many... peace

  • @Dannieel92 i am a filipino with spanish blood.

  • i am filipino with spanish blood.

  • @Dannieel92 Filipinos are definitely Asians. No one claim that we look like Europeans. Majority of the population are of the Austronesian stock. There are a mestizo minority. Chinese mestizos, Spanish mestizos, and American mestizos., etc. Most of the Filipinos who are of pure Spanish descent have already migrated to Spain or Latin America after the American occupation and also after World War 2.

  • I am very glad that the Americans did not play as heroes in this Film like they always does in every war movie they make, very accurate aside from the English speaking friar.. kinda confused me... but it looks very authentic...

  • President Fidel V. Ramos said to me and i quote : the Philippines was the USA's first Iraq, only there was no CNN then"

  • i don't understand why this video has dislikes when it is a very powerful and historical movie that shows how filipinos were treated in the past.

  • The massacre of Tausug civilians in Bud Dajo, Jolo by American troops during the Philippine-American War was one of the continuing factors why the south of the country became such a hotbed of conflict, even after Spain left.

Being objective, this war, as well as the US occupation, was instrumental in setting the Philippines up for its current problems with social class, regional conflict, an illogically un-Asian outlook at its regional role, uncaring government and serious inferiority complex.

  • Mr. John Sayles, Can you make another movie similar to this movie? Name it " Battle for Zapote Bridge " Make Sam Elliot as Gen. Lawton. It supposed to be the most liveliest battle of the whole Philippine-American War. Both opposing forces has artillery duel in it.

  • Also, I don't think this will hurt current US-Philippine relations. This is part of history, and most, if not all Filipinos already know of this event. It's just the first time someone made a big movie about it. This should actually invoke a little more respect for both parties to be able to show such a dark page from the past.

  • i dnt get it. they are Filipinos yet they are speaking spanish and have mexican or spanish names. and the actor himslef looks like a mexican

and the title itslef is spanish!!!

  • @oso4life24 That is actually an accurate portrayal. The Philippines was under Spanish rule at the time, and it was obligatory to have everyone baptized with Christian names, often Spanish. Also, the Philippines and Mexico were trade partners, so it's not unusual to find people who are half-filipino, half-mexican.

As for the title being Spanish... Amigo (same meaning in Mexican, Spanish, and Filipino) has been absorbed into the language, so it's valid.

  • @oso4life24 Most Filipinos have Spanish names because Philippines was then a colony of Spain for more than 300 years and because of that long contact with Spanish and others from the west like Mexicans , the oriental looks of Filipinos have changed since interracial marriages happened those years , i think ,that made Filipinos somewhat not the oriental looking compared to neighboring counterparts in Indonesia and Malaysia . The word amigo is also used in the Phil to refer to a friend!

  • @Haksaengnim

uh no. We say Pare which means friend.

  • @Nikko1Brown ." pare " is a colloquial word and is widely use in addressing men , friend or not . "amigo " though Spanish by origin is widely used in the Visayas and Mindanao .

  • @Haksaengnim huh i guess my dads from there and never uses it, unless he's speaking to someone who does speak spanish.

  • @Nikko1Brown In the Visayas (i.e, Leyte, Cebu, etc) , we say amigo or 'migo, which means "friend" or amiga to specifically refer female friends.

  • Comment removed

  • @babytigress your answer is partially true. there are many dialects and traditions that have very little to no Spanish influence. Tagalog is the dialect that has the most but if you hear dialects from the Visayas you don't hear Spanish.

  • @Nikko1Brown

Hey, you are wrong. Actually, Cebuano has more Spanish mixed in it than Tagalog. Remember that the very first Spaniards landed in Cebu. They also had very strong bases in other parts of the Visayas like Iloilo.

  • @babybitoy24 really? cause my dads from Negros and when he speaks I barely hear any spanish at allwhen he speaks his dialect. Mind you I only understand tagalog and my moms dialect kapampangan.

  • @Nikko1Brown Where in Negros? In Iloilo? You should listen closely. Actually, Cebuano has more Spanish words mixed on it than Tagalog. It's probably because Cebuanos just speak faster that's why you can't comprehend some of the words? Cebuano also uses Spanish words that are "uncommon" or are not usually used like "tomar".

  • @babybitoy24 You're all wrong... the truth is Chavacano in Zamboangoa is a Spanish Creole... when i went there all the signs are in Spanish... at the airport you could see the Bienvenidos... it was like landing in a depressed part of Mexico..maybe Tijuana... the locals speaks fluently, although, and the Province proclaimed itself as the Asia's Latin City... there you go.. you can google it baby.

  • @miamanuelmarizapablo Yeah, I knew about that. I've been to Zamboanga myself & I knew they spoke Chavacano which is a Spanish creole. It's pretty much like Spanish with a broken grammar. You may not know this but there's also a small population in Cavite City (which is in the Luzon area) which also speaks Chavacano. This is pretty amazing to know since Zamboanga's down south in Mindanao & they are relatively far from each other. I only corrected his statement about Tagalog having more Spanish.
