Forgive me for nitpicking Marlowe, but in all of your videos, I have never heard you play a 'riff'. A 'riff' to me, is the exact opposite of a 'groove', and your sense of groove is impeccable.
I am very new to the bass guitar and also trying to read sheet music,at times it seems overwhelming . Watching you and your video's for me is fun and also how you try to show others HOW and WHAT you are doing is purely and simply "CLASS" on your part. I have paid good money for video's that should not be shown in your presence. Thank You Greg
Nice man, I'm only 17 now but i hope to save up some money for jazzbass or a warwick, i'm playing on a crappy old ibanez 5 string... it's been with me since i was 9
I seriously have no words. I can't tell how many videos of this guy that I've watched and I own a Marcus Miller bass but I wanna put it up if this guy really exists, lol. More power to that groove of yours Marlowe. You're an inspiration man. Stay blessed!!!
Marlow, Thanks for another cool vid. Do you think you could do a line "inspired" by Tal Wilkenfeld sometime? Its cool if you don't, but just thought she has a blusey feel that seems somewhat unique and would be interesting as a daily lick.
Stu Hamm and Jaco Pastorious both have good instructional videos that go into 2 fairly different techniques and what you should be aiming for with as far as finger position and accuracy.
Starting slow and making sure you have a really good tone with where your fingers are pressing and how they're moving, before going faster will pay off.
There is a good section where he talks about the difference between fingering close to bridge vrs over the neck pickup... and a few good major patterns if your eye is fast (there is a booklet, altho it's notation and not tab)...... doing intervals is great.... including 6ths...
Here is what my dear old violin teacher said to me:
Practice at a VERY slow speed at first.
Break it down into small sections, maybe one measure at a time.
Focus your practice on that few measures you are haveing trouble with, playing them in a "loop". Once you get them, only then do you try to put it all together.
Learning how to come up with great lines comes from a knowledge of scales, chords, rhythm and, through experience, just knowing what sounds great. I don't know if creativity can be taught.
uno i would really like an explanation of how this is the pentatonic blues scale.. maybe its my lack of investigation but.. sometimes i really wonder how u can groove to just the right scale and know if that groove is a pentatonic or a major scale or wateva..
Its like asking a carpenter: How do you know what size of nail to use on a particular piece of woodwork? Its experience, education, and in this case musicianship.... Study the subject and you will learn - get a teacher, go to the library, listen to music, practice...
Rich ass douchey mexican jazz bass whore.

Do you still need to have any comments on your vids ?
You know that everyone says "it's perfect !"
I just do the same. It's getting boring at last...
Try to put some crap to change !
No, I'm joking of course.
That's badass and very instructive as usual.

The Jaco video was invaluable to me but is useless for beginners. It's too advanced.
