I have never heard anyone but a newfie say "aboot". and usually even they say it for laughs. and it doesn't sound like 'a boat' either. we say it just like you Americans. 'about'. there is no magical border that makes us pronounce certain words differently. unless you cross into Newfoundland, lol. everyone pronounces everything differently.

There is a gal I work with who definitely says it differently. Maybe not exactly "a boat", but similar. It's almost as if they are pronouncing both vowels separately or something.

@MadSlantedPowers again, every person pronounces every word differently. There IS NO specific Canadian accent. I watch American and Canadian television...and I see no difference. The 'aboot' is a joke. Though, apparently, American filmmakers think we have one..I just haven't noticed. There are also differing 'American accents' as well: Mid Westersn, Southern, Northeastern, etc. and the same goes for Canada. add in all the different ethnics...you got quite a mix.

You do realize that Canada didn't burn down the White House in the year 1812, right? The British burnt it down in the year 1814. British naval forces from Bermuda came up and landed in Maryland. A group of British, who had been sent into the capitol, were attacked while under a flag of truce to try and discuss terms (ie; payoff). The British commander was p/o'd that he had given the US a chance to be peaceful, but instead got lead in the face.. so he said "f" it.

It was a Republican controlled congress that pushed for black Americans to vote. In either case, I love my Canadian Cousins up north.
