No matter how "crazy" somethings can be, there is always a rational explanation to describe art and the feelings that it transmit to its audience. This dosn't comes alone, it comes after a complete formation of your being, so you can develop your own cosmogony that is not based on a hair style, way of dressing etc.

You probably have to take a look at what ART and a PERFORMACE is, and try to understand what messages could be behind the artists reasons of doing what he does, not everyone wants to look "cool" or have an physical image that represents their thoughts or feelings about society or their vision of the world. That can be achieved with art, an abstract creation that represents all that is in your mind.
