  • 2:05 video: Johnny Burnette sings his 1960 hit You're Sixteen.

March 25, 1934: birth of Johnny Burnette, American singer (d. 1964).

  • it's amazing how much music changed from the start to the end of the '60s.

  • I LOVE this song!!!

  • How old is the guy singing about fucking a 16 year old??? Looks to be way to old for a 16 year old. Creepy.

  • @Audiolaboratory i laughed so hard at this comment :DD

but i would date an older guy..

  • @mollycoo Yeah, it's creepy! What the hell were my parents listening to back then!?!?

  • @Audiolaboratory i do admit that at the momment im seriously in love with 60's music at the moment, but i've noticed that alot of the music is love songs, about younger girls, haha

  • I was quite surprised to see the great Bobby Vinton conducting the band. That was even before Roses Are Red!

  • Good times can come again if everyone wished for them. The 60s were an innocent time compared to now, despite the problems of that era. Everyone, not only the young, were positive and optimistic...they believed the world could get better. Most young men held young women in a kind of awe. Young women admired men. I know that the above is not the propaganda most people have read about the times, but that era was what it was. I wish people would make another era like it now. Could if they would.

  • "Yes, I do. You're sixteen. No, I'm not, you are. Let's not waste a minute."... but you just did!

  • He was my first big crush -- I bought Dreamin' when it came out, and then this song came along and I've always loved this song.

  • The girl behind him is looking at him with so much admiration in her eyes . . . : )

She has "I LOVE YOU JOHNNY" written all over her face . . .

  • @ShreyasDandekar

Yeah, I noticed that. I bet she wants to do him.

  • @HoboGus Yeah. . . . really.

  • he deflowered the 9ne he pointed at. that was the power of pomade.

  • i love this song, god!

  • This is my all times favorite song. I love Johnny Burnette!

  • @STF Unickol I'm 19 and i love oldies too :D we think the same. voto a favor!

  • @hgchjk Only a reprobate who is lost in sin would make a comment like that one. You cannot show me one line in this song that indicates they committed adultery

  • is that merv griffin introducing him?i think so...

  • @Hairyarmpit Yes it is Merv, and if you look real close thats Bobby Vinton behind him conducting the NBC orchestra.

  • Great Great! live performance by Johnny Burnette. RIP Johnny.. I remember my mom buying that 45 and playing the hell out of it! Those were great days for buying music.

  • WOW!!!!

  • wait stop the presses! ringo didnt make this song!?! this is news to me.

  • @YTHasHilariousVideos

ringo did cover it but don't feel bad you didn't know.

    you didn't miss much!

  • This was written by the Sherman Brothers who wrote the music for "Mary Poppins" and all of the movies by Disney in the 60s.

  • This was from a TV show called "Saturday Prom" hosted by Merv Griffin. That's Merv introducing Johnny. I think the show lasted either a half season or a season and then it was cancelled. I remember this show being on Satruday evenings at about 7:30 or 8:00 PM. I guess Merv wanted to tap into the American Bandstand audience. If I recall, he had some big-name artists on. Thanks for posting this.

  • ure right women should b respected and viewed as more than a sex kitten thats all men look for anymore noone is innocent anymore

  • There Should be a statue for this man in AMERICA ...

  • His earlier songs from 1956/57 played with his "Rock & Roll-Trio" were the greatest and best songs he ever did.. Unfortunately they never get big hits.. But i´m sure they would be today!! Just check out "Rockbilly boogie", "Lonesome Train", "Your Baby blue eyes", "Honey Hush", "Tear it up", "All by myself"... and many others... Off course he did also cover many songs from Black artists, but the surprising thing is, that his versions beats the flor down just like the black versions did!

  • Ringo's version is better i mean i think Ringo got the beat and the voice

  • I am embarrassed to say I thought Ringo was the first to record this. Thanks for posting and educating me!

  • I wish more teenagers were into old songs like this. :) These songs rock! They're so original, not like a lot of stuff out nowadays; I'm not saying that I don't like some of the stuff from my own era, lol, I love a lot of it. I agree with becca. :P

  • Johnny had a bunch of hits...one of the greatzzzzz

  • MOSH PIT!

  • Johnny was basically a rockabilly entertainer but he made a big hit nationally with this song which was featured years later in the movie American Grafetti. He also had two other Billboard Top 100 Hits, Dreamin, Big Big World. Unfortunately, Johnny was killed in a boating accident in 1964 and he is another one of those entertainers who had an untimely death. RIP. Ron--Highway Stars Magazine

  • This song was written by Robert and Richard Sherman, known as the Sherman Brothers. They also wrote "Tall Paul" for Annette Funicello and "Let's Get Together" for Hayley Mills in Disney's "The Parent Trap". The Shermans then became the staff songwriters for The Walt Disney Studio, and won Oscars for their song and score for "Mary Poppins", and wrote many other songs for Disney and Disneyland.

  • Johnny Burnette (1934-1964) had a #8 hit with this song late in 1960. Back then, teenagers didn't always try to find hidden meanings in songs. We just enjoyed them. "...ooh, when we kissed, we could not stop" just meant we couldn't stop kissing. ♫♥♫

  • <3

    love.

no shit about "fucking sexy bitches"

    all real. beautiful<333

  • johnny wrote alot of songs for other people, unlike most of the stars in the era.... so remember that before you cut him down

  • Here in this song he shoots rockabilly right in the heart with a violin. How sad. Look up train kept a rollin' for some real music. And he doesn't want to molest a minor in that song.

  • YEAH MAN!

  • isnt 16 illegal?

  • in some states 16 is what's known as a "legal consent" age, which means that the relationship can be legal if it's consensual. plus, he is singing it from the perspective of another teenager (rock and roll was strictly teenage/early 20's music back in the early days).

  • Wow 0:39 he even looks like Ringo! Although with a different shaped face and funny hair - but there's something about the nose....

  • @FlyingGlove1964 I don't think so!

  • perfect. Mikey xx

  • Awesome! Thank you so much for sharing!! It's amazing to see him in action in I love that flirt with the audience... "You're beautiful..." *slow blink, cool smile, the finger" :-)

  • no offence, but i think ringo starrs cover is better

  • @1995Sian Well there's no accounting for taste.

  • Look close & you see that Johnny uses many of the same hand jestures and mannerisms as Bobby Darin ! I wonder if they knew each other?

  • What a song. Huddersfield meets Lymington. Top stuff.

  • i just turned sixteen :)

  • Ahh, the days when legal rape was acceptable =) (1:38). Wish I coulda seen 'em.

  • @zigzagrolla lol

  • Do you REALLY LIKE this music?

    Just visit: w w w . LosGatosRockabilly . com

    *Wonderful songs !!!

  • The video lacks the excitement of the disc. ..But it's great to see anything of Johnny... The single must rank in the ten greatest pop discs of all time.

  • And both Jeff Bridges and Johnny Burnette have same initials, JB. Damn, maybe they are relatives after all, Bridges being the bridge that connect them. lol But I tell you, they look almost like twins. Really like Johnny, but more the ruffer stuff aka earlier rabilly, though "Cincinatti Fireball" is really great.

  • Great footage. You can't say we are spolided with Johnny Burnette footage videos. Anyone more than me that think Johnny have a striking resemblance with actor Jeff Bridges? Just have a look at the all time movie classic, "The Last Picture Show" with a young Jeff and you know what I mean.

  • @bellgardens53 I can see the resemblance!

  • Research dates this stirring clip from 26 Nov 1960 NBC TV half-hour variety show "Saturday Prom" hosted by Merv Griffin. Johnny Burnette and the Viscounts perform "You're 16" live and accompanied by famed NBC orchestra replete with violins. NBC feared "inapproriate" gestures by rock 'n' roll singers (à la Elvis @ Ed Sullivan). Trained NBC Teen Workshop shield close-up shots. Audience is high school teens. PS. Bobby Vinton conducts orchestra here.

50 years later, how is America faring?

  • @kehefoods Is this a comment on the decay of American society? Or the innocence of the 1960 media in comparison to today?

Not trying to be facetious, just interested in your point.

  • @kehefoods More on Saturday Prom (1960-61). Shot @ NBC studios (NYC); color @ NBC Color, E.16th & Ave. M Brooklyn. National. Most shows LIVE; hit song artists, e.g., Shirelles, Jo Ann Campbell, Johnny Burnette, Dion, Brian Hyland, Brenda Lee, Playmates, Hank Ballard, Chubby Checker, Sam Cooke, Johnny & Hurricanes, many more. No lip sync; full NBC Orchestra backup. Studio audience high-schoolers. NBC Teen Workshop surounded performers shielding "inappropriate" gestures in close-ups. (cf. imbd)

  • @kehefoods

    God, shut up fun snatcher.

  • @kehefoods ...and thats the late Merv Griffin there introducing Johnny on stage....

  • It didn't dawn upon me the host Merv Griffin until I heard that telltale snickering that passes for his laughter. A YouTube exclusive: Merv did not, as he claimed, originate the Jeopardy theme! While listening to the ending theme of old radio show "Suspense" (the early 1950's shows), I marveled at its similarity (tempo, cadence, notes) to the Jeopardy tune. Merv got his start in radio (1944--early1950s) as a singer and announcer. The tune has earned Merv & Merv's Estate ca. $100 million.

  • Check out that greaser haircut, Clyde!

  • Awesome! Never saw this before; thanks for sharing!

  • Excellent!

Thank you for sharing this title!

    Regards

  • Merv Griffin ? I don't think he was ever 16 -- all my friends wanted Johnny's haircut too ! ! !

  • Brillaint song, great performance.

  • Was he the father of Elvis Presley?

    Thanks

  • What makes yo think that?? is it the hair???

  • @STFUnickol No, the spanish wikipedia. I just read the english and I guess which one is wrong XD

  • Besides of enjoing of the lovely song I do like to watch the nice girl who smiles all the time behind Burnette, What will be of her nowdays ???

  • This song will reach 300.000 viewers . Ilike the girl who is close to him! What a period of time!!!!!! Juan Arica/ Chile

  • Wow that is a young Merv Griffin,

  • I do like this video wth its music and atmosphere,,around that time I visited the USA for the first time and could admire how were dancing there the young ones

  • I always thought Ringo Starr wrote this... I always liked the lyrics, even if they are rather embarassing.

  • This song was written by the Sherman Brothers, who coincidentally wrote all kinds of Disney music, especially all the songs that were in Mary Poppins and many others.

  • Johnny...what a singer!!!

    I wish I was 16 in 1960...

  • i think poeple should call women beautiful now insted of hot or sexy

  • Some kats like myself still do!!;)

  • good everyone deserves respect

  • I think it depends on the woman.

  • I know I'd rather be called beautiful or darlin' instead of babe or baby ;)

  • Yeah its sad that people, or should I say, kids today can't tell the difference between Love and the other one. I still say girls are pretty and beautiful rather than hot and sexy but all my friends don't.

  • @beccapug5 i know....dank is the worst

  • @beccapug5 depends which women...

  • @beccapug5 There is a reason this has 29 thumbs up. Great comment

  • @beccapug5

    You`re so right!!

  • @beccapug5

    U kan't spel fer shit.

  • I'M SIXTEEN GUYZ

  • I'm sixteen .. and I love this song !

  • So I'm 16 & I LOVE oldies.

Most girls my age always leave negative comments. :P Man... I wish I could've been born during this era... it seemed so innocent..

  • @STFUnickol i totally agree with you! I'm 23 and I love the oldies.

  • @STFUnickol i totally agree most girls nowadays are caught up on materialistic things :6

  • @STFUnickol If you were sixteen when this was a hit you'd be a grandmother today. It's pretty song. I've always liked it.

  • @STFUnickol Your really fucking stupid if you think the 60's where innocent. The 60's have a huge Acid wave through the states everyone was dropping lsd like honey on there tounge and having sex like rabbits. Educate yourself better you stupid girl!

  • @usualperson wow man lol rage even harder dude.... 60s may have had an acid wave but LSD is nothing compared to the drugs that are done today.... how about you go watch another history special to educate yourself retard.

  • @usualperson yeah shit happened but no where like today.

  • Ah, How i long for times gone by!''

  • He's playing a seventeen year old in the song.

  • Comment removed

  • @Yamsha81

    ........you're silly ;-P

  • How many of you noticed that BOBBY VINTON was CONDUCTING the orchestra. That's what he did before he started having vocal hits..

  • I picked up that right away. I have a photo of Bobby Vee performing with Vinton conducting the orchestra.

  • I wonder how many boy "Bobbys" there might have been gathered there. did you spot Bobby Rydell and Bobby Day too?

  • Good observation.

  • i like his version better than ringo starr's

  • I thought he sounded more like "The Big

    Bopper" ....great song!

  • GREAT PIECE OF HISTORY...Did you notice who introduced him....Merv Griffen when he was a "child"

    bobby k from 61'

  • What an incredible powerful voice - I am always amazed, how hig a pitch, he is able to reach!

  • Incredible good to watch Johnny Burnette doing this live though my heart go for his Rockn'Roll/Rock-A-Billy stuff. I totally second squirrelnutcased that Johhny didn't at all sound like Elvis. Burnette had a very distinct voice, not sounding like Elvis at all. One of the original rockers. Tnx posting it.

  • Fantastic video!! thanks so much for posting it.

    Barb

  • dorsey wrote this one.

  • Johnny has been gone for 45 years now.

what a great singer he was.

  • Was wondering how he died?

  • He drowned in a boating accident while going fishing in California, in 1964.

  • Thats sad, thank you.

    Class of 67

  • Comment removed

  • he fell off his boat and drowned

  • why do you flag his comment? its sad but true :(

  • Wow!!! This is great. Johnny was one of the great Rockabilly singers, like Johnny Horton, who crossed over but kept his vocal attitude intact. Seems like a note for note chart from the record, but the if my memory is right, the timing is different when they come out of the bridge (Oooh when we Kiss we could not stop) downbeat instead of upbeat..small but strange difference. Anyway a rare chance to see one of the true greats singing live. Thanks!!

  • I'm sure thats the fabulous Johnny Smith (Moonlight in vermont) playing his D'Angelico in the back left....any comments.

    Jim D

  • he sounds just like elvis!

  • is there some other elvis your talking about? cause he sounds nothing like elvis presley.

johnny had a pretty distinct voice.

    i liked it =]

  • fun...interesting integrated audience, but most of the blacks are close to the stage....they are not all other performers...source???

    thanks for putting this together

  • Bad ass

  • Wow that was cool ass

  • This was Fantastic to see! I never saw any clips of Johnny, and this sounds live. As far as history goes, The Rock and Roll Trio, and thats it. You go no further. Of course, Carl Perkins and Charlie Feathers are Ding Dong Daddies all the way!

  • chuckdee121: thats not Rock n Roll Trio. It is year 1960, and this single was #8 in US by Johnny Burnette. Rockabilly years were long gone.

  • Despite what so many others say about another far more acclaimed singer of the time laying claim to the title, this guy was King of the entire rock a billy genre, in my view. Far better looking and a lot more charismatic personality wise than "you know who" too.

  • Good point- Although Id save the title of King of Rockabilly for Carl. But these guys were the band that Elvis tried to copy in Memphis. These guys were older and played around town before Elvis Scotty and Bill. Elvis clearly took some of his singing style from Johnny, especially Elvis version of baby Lets Play House. Long live the Rock and Roll Trio, one of the most underated bands in American Rock and Roll History

  • Thanks for that bit of History rbound827. I was born in '48. As a kid growing up in Chicago, I listened to all this stuff on the radio, but had no idea there were such divisions in the rock world. Doubt I'd even heard the word "Rockabilly" back then. I learned what Rockabilly really was quite by shock, about 15 years when I went to a Stray Cats gig in TJ Mexico (nr San Diego) and suddenly realized I was I'd just come out of a time machine. Suddenly it was 1957 and I was in Memphis. Unforgetable
