  • thanks, it was what i shuold know.

    how to manage the dough.

    always mine are like glue.

  • making roti is not easy, i have tried to knead the dough many times but it either becomes sticky or separated, what would the recipe be for about 10 roti's? aunty makes it look so easy!!! not fair :( i will try with this recipe in mind next time

  • dear Manju, I do my rothi again and again (I use atta from local indian store) but they come out crispy which I don't like! What is the secret? Thanks!

  • @Liduniya Knead the dough well until it is soft and smooth, it makes it easier adding halk a spoon of oil in the dough. If skillet is not hot enough roti will be crisp.

  • @Manjulaskitchen Thanks, it came out perfectly today, my husband was happy!

  • @Liduniya Try making it a bit thicker And/Or adding Scraped coconut.

  • @Liduniya Got the exact same problem! Did u tried the tips from manjula? How did it go/

  • This is not the way we make roti in Guyana/Trinidad. This recipe is more like Indian flat bread.

  • @Teaser0424 its an indian dish which as she said is made in alot of different ways but they are all suppose to turn out the same, its not suppose to be thick like actual bread and i should know am indian

  • Thanks so much for this wonderful video Manjula!

I noticed you added the recipe under the video description and have the correct amount of water you use on it. Anyone that wants to make her recipe please check her description below the video. It's a 1/4 cup and one table spoon of water rather than a half cup.

  • hi aunty, why do you use lukewarm water and not cold water? is it because it mixes better?

  • Looks wonderful. I am inspired to try this recipe!

  • I love Manjula...so so so so helpful! I just made these for the first time and they are so delicious!

  • Is yeast used in Indian breads? In any Indian cooking?

  • @DigitalPraise7 Yeast is used for making Naan.

  • my dough always comes out totally sticky, any idea why? am i using too much water? or...?

also: they dont grow on the pan. they hardly "bubble". except if i use a lot of oil. than its more like fried than baked...

also: are they supposed to be really thin or

  • This evening I'm going to try this receipe. See what it comes out.

  • can I use a non-stick pan, or a grill to make 'em?

  • Namaste! These recipes are fabulous! We would love to feature you and one of your recipes on our website!

  • do you use low heat or high heat ?

  • thank you sooo much i love your cooking

  • In serbia we call this pancakes XD

  • @MrSuccessSeeker

pancakes are made with eggs, milk, and flour, not with water and flour .. lol (:

ps: I'm Macedonian, so I think I know how we made pancakes in the Balkan :)

  • Thank you very much for your lessons ....I'm African American learning how to cook Indian food for the 1st time through your vids.

  • @siferuk actually aunty made a mistake in saying...it is not 1/2 cup of water in it but actually it is 1/4...!!

  • @KitniMohabbatHaiFan yes.u r right!

  • You need an Iron plate for this using a normal pan not that good

  • you're wonderful :)

  • i put the amounts you said but for some reason it was just a huge lump of sticky mess, i had to end up putting loads more flour in.. What did i do wrong? :S

  • when i eat this in restaurant, usulally it is spicy, and i love it! but you don't seem to put any spice in it... can you tell me a recipie with spicies??

  • They turned out lovely, i used 1 cup flour and 1/2 water... will never buy shop brought again!!!

  • i made these roti's as soon as i saw your video. My husband just loves them thank you so much you helped me to make my roti's edible finally!!! and he himself could not stop thanking you Lol.

  • I tried about 5 minutes ago. Set my roti on fire! :(

  • looks similar to the flour tortillas i buy from a near buy taco shop. they make them from scratch, they dont use store bought.

  • I'm going to make some of these right away, they look tasty~

  • Thankyou, manjula ji you made it so simple. I had chapathi atta sitting in my home for the last 4 mos and I have been buying chapathies from a cook. Now I can make them in 10-15 minutes, thanks to you once again and god bless you.

  • Yes!!! Thank you so much Manjula, Hamdulilla! I was missing one significant factor. You make it look so easy :-D

  • Brilliant! I have a massive sack of Elephant Atta that I only paid £2.00 for in ASDA! I absolutely love chapatti/roti/tortilla flatbread. My first attempts have been rubbish. This is definitely the kind of cooking that needs a "mums" experience. You make it so easy, especially the "bloating" of the roti.

I've got a very heavy cast iron frying pan too... Will try this again.

  • thanks!!! i just made one its soooooooooooooooo good!

  • gracias quisera saber que harina es la que usa ? podria poner los ingredientes en español or sweden

  • in this video do you not mean a cup of flour half cup of water?

i did half and half and it was goo not dough i proceeded to add another half cup of flour and it was perfect :)

  • Thank you for the recipe , it was clear , I'll definitely try it !

  • Manjula, Thank you for making this video and helping people like me to learn how to make rooti :). Today I tried it for the first time, following your steps, and I did really good!!!! Thank you very much, and I wish you very good health so you can keep teaching us to make delicious Indian dishes :) Namaste!

  • Namaste, Manjula. I have used chappati flour and my roti does not seem right. My fiance is punjabi and out of respect to his mother, whom I adore, I want to be able to make these right. Can you please advise me. Blessings and thank you!

  • Thanks for the recipe! I've learned how to make Lucchi's before, almost the same except for no oli in your pan. Nice to find an easier recipe!

  • Hi Manjula I prepare chapathis the way you show in this video, but the only difference is that I apply oil all over the chapathi before removing it from the skillet. And may be because of this they become either very hard or very cripsy after keeping for some time. Please advice me how to keep them soft, say if I prepare in teh morning and I want them to be soft till lunch time. Thank you very much.

  • thank you thank you thank you

  • thank u soo much ...........

  • i love chapati!!!!! I have it every day!!!!!!!

  • This says so much--the pan is perfect, and the rotis look fabulous! Healthy too. So much harder to describe than to show someone how to do it...Thank you!!

  • Thank you dear Manjula, I tried this and it worked very well. Please continue posting more videos. Peace.

  • Awesome video!

  • Manjula, with your help and assistance, I have finally figured out how to make my Indian husbad happy with the perfect roti!!! I am American and new to Indian cooking so i will be following you closely to keep my Indian husband happily fed like at home :) !!!!

  • Made just like Manjula - though at the end i put bertolli spread - very tasty thankyou for the demonstration - Trev x

  • @SpringDewful

It looks like it might be veggie oil. Or peanut oil.

  • dear manjula thank you for this video on rotis. i enjoyed your style and techniques. I look forward to trying your receipe.

  • tnq very much for sharing, best wishes

  • @ondiekAK47 you can you any non stick skillet.

  • The chapati don't wanna pop up like yours - what's the secret? I've tried already all variations, with more or less water, with more or less time of rest, with whol weat flour, with all purpose wheat flour, very hot or middle hot skillet, skillet made from iron and nonstick skillet, pressing, going around - tons of rotis, but they never pop up the way your roti did - your roti was completely popped up at the end. Mine not. They pop up, but never to that ball size :-/

  • Good demonstration and very understandable commentary .

    Thanks .

  • wow thanks!

  • this was so helpful - thank you!

  • @ondiekAK47 Thanks so much for a great instructional video! I am going to get some whole wheat flour and try today!

  • What an awesome clip! Thanks Mandula. Your instructions were great and my rotis turned out perfectly.

  • i am from kuwait and we love the indian food and all about indian people starting from the food tell the style in clothes

i loved ur mama tell he Hi from kuwait

  • Brilliant ...thank you

  • Brillaint Video Thanks! I just made Humus and realised we have nothing to eat it with so here goes!! I am going to try and make some with Rice flour as I can't eat wheat, will post how they came out!

  • Thank u now I can make rotis

Nobody thought me even after asking hundred times

  • o_o i cant never make roti

  • ............it looks like a tortilla though

  • i love Roti, wish someone had shown me them earlier. who'd have known such simple ingredients can produce such a great tasting indian bread!

  • Great!

  • Its amazing how just whole wheat flour and water can produce this delicious light roti. I buy atta flour at the Indian store and its much better than our Western whole wheat flour for rotis. I need to find that small rolling pin though; I'm sure it must be easier than our big western rolling pins.

  • Fab, Absolutely brilliant, I cant wait to check out all your other video's.

Can I make them without using wheat flour though?

  • One of the best tutorials that I have ever seen! -Thank you for sharing!

  • Would I get the same results if I used all-purpose flour?

  • Don't' you mix flour with a little coconut shreds (scraped coconuts)?

  • whole wheat flour is the same as all purpose flour?

  • Now what is the difference between Roti and Tortillas? they seem like they are the same thing?

  • @RedVixen81 Tortilas are Mexican and usually made from maize although they are also made from wheat

  • thanks for the upload! excellent explanation...i love how you do everything step by step and speak slowly.! keep up the good work!

  • I love roti bread! thanks for sharing

  • i am out of bread here and found your simple yet informative video. i will bake it right away. really appreciated. thanks a lot. i will keep watching your videos.

  • Madam, i like your video,

and i want to try make some food another country recipe.

long time ago, my husband have bussiness at Bombay,

He told me, indian food very delicious,

some Indian food similar our contry(indonesia).

    thank you so much .

  • Loved this, I have picked up very many tips thanks.

  • Simple and looks soooooo good. I will be searching for more of your videos.

  • Thanks Manjula!

  • excuse me aunty manjula.. ur chapati is puff up so nicely.. mine one dont want to puff up.. why? can u help me?

  • @SpringDewful

    Few drops of oil

  • hello. can i use all purpose flour?. i don't have whole wheat flour.

  • My Roti tasted good - but it did not "bubble" much - only a very small amount. Possibly it may have been undercooked, but the skillet was hot and I was worried about burning of the thin vegetable film on the skillet . This was using Plain Wholemeal flour.

  • thanks so much for your nice way of teaching how to make indian food

  • I tried it with "Self Raising Wholemeal Flour" but the roti came out crispy like a tortilla !! :P Suggestions Anyone ?

  • @sunny614

    Use plain whole wheat flour

  • @sunny614 Try buying Golden Temple brand flour. You can find it in Indian stores and Food Maxx if you have one around you.

  • @sunny614 First lets establish the difference between the two flowers; Self Raising is with yeast where as plain is without. When making Roti plain flower is used. Good luck

  • @vpscerri self raising is with baking powder not yeast... in my country anyway.

  • @sunny614 You don't want self rising or self raising flour--which is popular in the USA. Instead get 1 bag whole wheat flour such as Reds Whole Mill, & a bag of Unbleached all purpose flour. Try to purchase Canadian flour. (use 1/2 w.w. flour, and 1/2 all purp. hard wheat flour, or bread flour. Use either types of flour for the recipe, but we like the 50% w.w.flour & 50% unbleached all-purpose hard flour together. also like roti can try the whole spelt flour , or the light, or1/2 of each.

  • I loved this video. Extremely helpful. I think I'm going to try making Rotis.

  • now those roti looks deliciouoso

  • found this today and tried it this evening..mine didnt puff but they tasted awesome.

  • Incredibly helpful video, thank you! I'm cooking one meal for every country in the world (A-Z) and will try making this for Grenada (a Caribbean country that eats a lot of Indian food, including roti and curry). Thanks! Sasha

  • Manjula, I have been perfecting these rotis and I love them. The first couple of times, I could not get them to puff up, but now they are...(i had to put the fire on medium high). they are so delish...I made them for a friend and he loved them too. I am not as good as you at getting them to puff up, but all the same, they taste great...Thank you.

  • Thank you Manjula for your beautiful video. Iam trying to learn to make homemade unleavened bread for Passover. I notice you did not use any yeast or leavening products and mixed and cooked your dough pretty quickly. So, I believe this recipe will be perfect for me and my family. Thanks again for your expertise.

  • Thank you for taking your time to share all these delicious recipes with us here on Youtube and for your wonderful demonstrations.

  • thank you Manjula. I have tried and failed with roti before, so now I'm taking some lessons from you!

  • thanks manjula for this video , you make it si easy and the instructions clear. any recipe for indian crab curry? again thanks.

  • Nameste Manjula, fantastic demonstration, thank you,

  • thank u for sharing :)

  • can u use plain flour or self raising?

  • @mzraver1 use whole wheat flour

  • I have been using ready made wheat aata like Ashirwad, Samrat etc. I found out that these ready made aata rotis turn out to be hard :(. The longer its kept outside, the harder they become. They best wheat flour is Lokwan or Sior. You have any ideas as to how to make rotis soft and that will stay soft for a long time?

    Thanks for your videos:)

  • Love it. Amazing. Thank you soo so much!

  • The roti I am used to are usually bigger. In order to use this recipe, would I need to just double it or add a half of the recipe?

  • @domino0328

Double the recipe may be 1 cup flour about 1/2 cup water try 4 or 6 depends how big you want.

  • @Manjulaskitchen after kneading the dough, how long do i have to keep it covered and untouched on the tabke???10 minutes? 1 hour?

  • @modgurl69

1/2 cup flour and about 1/4 cup water

  • Ps. As Mandula states, you need to knead (haha) the dough to encourage air pockets in the structure of the Chapati.

  • Mandula has lots of experience at this, she makes it look easy!

    Such simple ingredients, Fantastic.

To make the Roti puff up, you need to coax the air around the inside.
