This is not illegal in Arkansas. The parents AND THE STUDENTS sign a form at the start of the school year saying that the Principal is allowed to give swats to the student if they misbehave, and the student has a choice between swats and Saturday school. Most students choose swats because its a faster punishment and they don't want to lose a Saturday, there is also a witness in the room, it is not just the student and the Principal. It is pretty normal here.

The students are also given the CHOICE of school dentention or (IF the school has the PARENTS consent) corporal punishment. My sister in law works at a k-12 school and told me most parents give consent and most students (mainly teens)also prefer getting the licks as opposed to spendings time in detention.

But here's another angle: with all the physical violence and abuse out there, and so many people going over the edge, and being that the principle is so much bigger than she is, I can't blame the kid for having paddle apprehensions. I also think that if paddling is legal, he should have gotten a female teacher to do it.

@YouthFreedomFighters I'll tell you how. Parents sign a consent form before each school year allowing or NOT allowing the use of corporal punishment on their "child" as an OPTION. The students are also given the CHOICE of school dentention or (IF the school has the PARENTS consent) corporal punishment. My sister in law works at a k-12 school and told me most parents give consent and most students (mainly teens)also prefer getting the licks as opposed to spendings time in detention.
