  • Excellent! An approriate video to watch, on this 146th anniversary of the battle. Tod's story is sad, and so many others. Cleburne never made it back to his sweetheart in Alabama. Nothing is ever forgotten.......

  • omg this is spookey im born on the dec 2.(tod died that day)

  • what's the music to this?

  • @UnseenVoices

sounds good but the myth just may be real. Just because you and others haven't picked it up doesn't mean it's not real

  • The bodies were not buried where they fell.

  • @JeddyRyan

    some were

  • Thank you for your comment. You might read the book, Skeletons of the Civil War, which lists accounts from several who've had encounters with spirits at the Carter House.

  • @JeddyRyan i skimmed through that book...hilarious.

  • @UnseenVoices

    Jealous much?

  • his own father found him in the yard after the battle and brought him inside

  • Actually, Tod's commanding general, T.B. Smith, took FB Carter to where Tod's body lay on the battlefield just a short distance from the house. Two Alabama soldiers bore the stretcher back to the Carter house.

  • That was really nice. I love the music and Tod's story is very sad. I remember reading about him when I wrote my paper on the Battle of Franklin for the Civil War class I took.

  • amazing and sad

  • NEVER FORGOTTON HERO'S OF THEIR TIME!

  • I will! I think it would be fun. Not sure the Tom Cartwright who I believe is still the curator. Not sure. I will contact him and see if this would be possible. We live in Illinois but are trying to get out there this fall. I will let you know.

By the way, the music is great, what is it?

  • Tom resigned - I hear to go on a speaking tour and pen a few books. The music is from King Kong. Tod's story is so sad. Be sure to look up Heath Mathews - a military historian who knows more about Franklin than anyone I know. He taught Thomas a few things! Glad you enjoyed the vid!!

  • Will do. I will also pick up a copy of the book.

The last time I was at Franklin was in 1998 for a Carter family reunion. Found some cool pictures of Tod as a boy etc.

My relative, James Carter, died in Mississippi in 1858 of influenza. It was interesting because, we went on a tour of the gravesites. I asked where James Carter was buried and he stated that no one knows.

Then I look down at the tombstone I am standing near and THERE IT IS!

    Take care!

  • send me a message when you decide to come to franklin and I will email you heath's contact info. Interesting stories!!

  • David Fraley is currently the interim director and an expert on Civil War and the Carter House history. He lives it, daily.

  • I understand Heath Mathews is the local expert on the Battle of Franklin, Chickamauga, Shiloh, Perryville. He actually collected some of the quotes the director used on the History Channel program about it.
