Wow! I didn't know that the Pat Sullivan who did the cartoons in the 50's also did the original silent ones. When I was really young, the only cartoons made expressly for TV consumption were Rough and Ready and Huckleberry Hound by Hanna Barbera. On Saturday mornings they used to dig up these old silent cartoons to fill the time. All those weird sight gags, like a cat using an exclaimation point that appeared over his head, to pry open a window was pretty surreal for a four year old mind.

Anime uses a lot of cheap tricks to reduce the amount of time and money spent on their shows, infact alot of anime is quite lazy in terms of animation.
