I think of the Salton Sea in the same way I think of used Rolls Royces....so tempting....such an opportunity...so beautiful....ever so cheap to get into......but in the final analysis, absolutely pointless and impractical, beyond the beauty. The Salton Sea just gets too hot, when California's coast is the perfect temperature pretty-much 24/7/365.
Surely that's why the area got built/developed...then abandoned. People just couldn't pass up that opportunity...even though they should have.
In its heyday, the Salton Sea was a nice place. Even though it got really hot in the summer, people would go swimming and water skiing in the lake to cool off.
me and some friends went to the salton sea a few months ago at night we took guns just incase of a emergeny and it was pretty crazy down there we look at motel rooms and 1 friend found a wallet with this womans information and a few money and we also found lots of glass in the floor and we check the toilets they had shit and lots of flys in it and smelled so sick we found a brifcase just with cloth and a knife but it was pretty crazy down there if u go makesure to bring a gun and some friends.
The Salton Sea was once a popular place for boating, swimming, fishing, etc., but an increase in the salt level of the water caused large numbers of fish to die and the water became nasty. This, in addition to a couple of hurricanes in the 1970's, caused the communities surrounding the sea to deteriorate.
People no longer want to live next to a lake the can sometimes stink real bad and where tons of fish die and wash up on the shore.
I understand the storms and the water getting nasty, but how would that keep the people from taking their furniture with them (sofas, tables stands)? I wouldn't think they'd have been in THAT much of a hurry to get out of there.
It's a crazy place. There were some hurricanes and flooding a while back. In addition, the water got nasty and fished started dying off. People simply abandoned their homes and trailers and never came back.
jason: I did, but they were too dark for shooting videos. Mostly just the bathrooms. All the copper plumbing had been ripped out (probably by tweekers needing to make a buck).

Many of the people who owned property there were older.
Some had no families so many of them when they died left behind their belongings.
Some of the buildings were foreclosed and left abandoned to rot.
The region has no one who wants to move out there anymore so places sit empty till nature takes them back including the flooding.
