IDK. What I would like to know is how Black Americans would feel if a university had Zulu warriors as a mascot, or how Mexican Americans would feel if we had an Aztec mascot or a Bandito mascot, or how Asian Americans would feel if we had a mascot representing any historical Asian culture. Just food for thought.
North Dakota? has strong support of their local Native American nation and supports them with their programs. The all-powerful NCAA required them to drop their team emblem, too.
However Florida State pays money to the Seminole Tribe, who in turn give them permission. Somehow the NCAA allowed FSU to keep their mascot, who indeed launches a spear onto the field, even at visiting stadiums, but not the North Dakota mascot.
The thing that gets me is that most people complaining are not even Native Americans. They are jerks that just want to destroy a good thing and like to be pests.
You should be honored that the university chose the Chief as their symbol. As the uneducated people seem to become more and more liberal in their beliefs our society spirals more and more towards nothingness. If a white person complained every time something was said about them it would be 24/7 complaining. If you dont like it, dont look. It is not disrespectful. In fact the only disrespect I EVER saw the Chief get was from ANTI chief people, ya know, since all of you are devoid of blame
I can tell you right now that Most young people (people not quite out of high school yet) have a greater understanding of Native American history than of say.... Roman history.
yea, its so dumb. Seriously those franchises are making money off truly racist depictions of native americans. Atleast Cleavland and Washington definitely are. How is this ignorant? All of the people who have portraid choed illiniwek have lived with and studied native american dances. besides the chief wasn't only a mascot he showed the spirit and loyaly to the university of illinois
i wonder why they didn't get an actual native american to do the dance instead of a white man. you truly don't understand how much this offends some people. it's pure mockery to us...
okay, the school has an interview with the last living illini indian which states that having the university of illinois represent the illini indians in this way was a great honor. so whatever tribe you part of has nothing to do with this
"It was astounding," said Jason Dollarhide, the 2nd Chief of the Peoria Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma. "I thought, 'Why don't these people give it up?' " His tribe is comprised of the last descendants of the Illini federation of tribes, which were forcibly moved out of Illinois in the early 1800s.

A medicine man, unfortunately from the unrelated Sioux nation, gave the U of I the set of skins they've been using since late 80s or early 90s. So we've had some support from Native Americans.
Baritone, I understand but did they go back for their yearly checkups? Did the predecessor honor the elders in anyway or were they forgotten after they took what they wanted?

In 2000, his group passed a resolution opposing Chief Illiniwek as a "degrading racial stereotype."
I don't know why a university has to keep alive something that speaks of racism," Dollarhide said. "It just fascinates me that people have to hold onto something that is so hurtful to others."
They note that the Chief is supposedly an Illini, yet wore the regalia of a Sioux, one of the Illini nation's traditional enemies. They note that his dance was also not a traditional Illini dance.
Said Dollarhide: "I love it when they say they are honoring us, yet they never ask us how we want to be honored, and this stereotype is not it."
No, I think it's a perfectly good argument and if you can't see that, then you truly have lost any roots to your culture. You talk about "honor" and how great a figure the "chief" is, yet you hesitate to compare this "greatness" with some of the greatest Black leaders. Are you saying Native American leaders are below Black ones? Pretty low, man...pretty low.
Man, the midwest must have really sucked the blackness out of you. Now I feel more sorrow than anger towards you. Don't tell me you wouldn't be insulted if the "chief" was a caricature of MLK or Malcom X, jumping around like Sambo.
No, no ancestors were not Fat Stealers for the number of black folk who traveled into South Dakota during the Dakota Sioux Indian Wars was a small amount but we do have stories.
Wasicu (Fat Stealers) in our language can refer to both black and white folk but mainly white. Our history with the black folk in South Dakota wasn't extensive but there were instances where the black folk sided with the Wasicu and tried to exterminate us.
There you go, you just pushed the Illini to Oklahoma and now you consider them extinct. Your philosphy follows the ways of your ancestors, the Wasicu (Fat Stealers).
I don't think anyone will ever agree on this. From my point of view, the Chief did not mock Native Americans and I don't think the Chief was started to make fun of people. I just get tired of arguing over Holidays r Chrismas or X-mas or nothing. PC has gone too far. The Chief is gone. So if it was a sore spot, let it go. It's done
Wouldn't it be great if you had an authentic northern plains traditional dancer who came from a family of dancers? Wouldn't it be great if you had authentic northern plains singers to sing for the dancer? A good drum group will cost $5,000 for the weekend.
Illinois kicked out the last Illini and the moved to Oklahoma and are now the Peoria. Why wasn't Oklahoma or South Dakota included in this poll for a Missouri or Illinois poll is not valid.
I have lived on the crst reservation all my life. i have been to several powwows. how can you care about an 81 year old tradition when thousands of native americans died to keep their traditions sacred. this has got to be at the top of the list of the most disrepectful things i have seen in my life. one white kid dancing around a basketball court for a bunch of other white kids in clothes he shouldnt even be fuckin wearing. i am glad they of rid of that tradition.
To all you gringo's out there, heres a prescription for you if you want to have a Indian mascot for your team. Go back to Europe or where ever else you came from, and do it there. While your at it take all of your neighbors with you.
How ironic, almost all the people who picked that name were Irish! It will be much easier to find Irish peoples for your protests since the Americans have a Removal Act for the Irish so there are still millions living in the United States. (obviously you are trying to make a point about the comparison since you posted your comment here instead of a ND clip).
ok when the university first started doing this they had permission from the local chief he even helped make the outfit and taught them the dance. its something great i love to watch and this fucking shit about being respectful and racial equality or w/e takes it away
I bet a lot of chief naysayers do not know that to be the Chief you must go through an extensive selection process and learn TONS of info about the tribe. Its not like we let some ignorant schmuck go out their and dance. Now i bet less than half of the children born will even know Illinois was inhabited by Native Americans at one point. Way to go make it so they never fucking existed that makes since.
Get you head out of your asses. 99.9 % of my life I don't think about Native Americans. During halftime of basketball and football games, I consider how cool it must have been to be part of a tribe with the dancing and music and rituals but you hypersensative fools don't get that and I'll reflect on a culture's history a little less. You win?
The Illini people were extinguished in INTER-TRIBAL wars, not by "white men" yet, for the last 80+ years, the U of I has honored and revered the Illini people by displaying as best they can a re-enactment of an Illini war dance. Chief Illiniwek is honorable, respected, and loved.
wow, what school do you go to, or do you go to one at all? cause man, you can not spell. besides, i think what you are saying is disgusting and terrible. why don't you go back into the hole you crawled out of.
I guess I can't go there then because I don't support the chief. Wow, now my world is going to end. I wouldn't go to U of I, chief or not. Know what, I am happy to see the chief go.
what's horrible about this whole debate is that there are native americans on the pro chief side and no one on the anti chief side listens to them, that or they say they are wrong. who's listening to both sides now? at least the pro chief people have facts based off of listening to the anti-chief side, but pro chief people can't explain what cheif means to them without the other side blowing them off
the Souix Tribe recently took a stand against this so called chief, does that sound like they are proud?
so if you all want warriors or chiefs to parade around acting foolish to honor your schools, change the name to the fighting zulus and have a guy with his face painted black,in a fake leopard skin running around with a huge shield and spear, why dont you honor zulus they are a fierce people, proud, tribal all the qualities you seek
why don't we ban the easter bunny and santa claus while we're at it too. besides, all people care about anymore is the attention and the money. the seminoles are fine with florida using their tribe as a mascot, but that's because they get money for it. the illini are not around to pay anymore.
Contrary to popular belief, Florida State has contributed very little monetarily to the Seminole Tribe of Florida. The closest thing I can think of is actively recruiting and providing scholarships to tribe members. (Three members of the 8 man Tribal Council are FSU graduates.)
The are, however, called upon to help in other activities on campus which include, seats on the board of directors, graduation ceremonies, crowning a homecoming chief and princess, designing Chief Osceola's costume, and input for any statues in their honor. (The UNCONQUERED statue in front of Doak comes to mind.)
The tradition of jumping around at half time has come to an end, leaving many students and alumni to spend the rest of their lives soiling themselves while lying in the fetal position.
Has anybody considered the fact that there are natives in favor of the chief? NCAA is FASCIST. F the NCAA and all those who care to comment without knowledge or experience regarding this matter.
PS: LUMBEEMARIAH, it's clear you're talking out of your crusty butthole, shut your trap and don't ever show up on these boards again, you fowl-mouthed ignoramus.
If you want to be PC, then you have to be equal and get rid of all the potentially racist symbols in the NCAA, otherwise you are just setting a double standard. Yes, the dance could be seen as slightly offensive, so, just get rid of the dance. The Chief is an intergral part of not only U of I, but Illinois history as a whole, and they deserve to at least keep that. I went to a High School where the mascot was a Warrior, and i am a registered N/A, big deal.
1. The dance was taught and choreographed by American Indians and is similar to the dances used by American Indians in their dancing competitions. The moves are exagerated so that people can see in a large stadium.
2. The outfit was designed by the Souix Indian for the performance.
3. The head dress has a "feather" in it with the name of every Chief.
4. The name "Fighting Illini" is in reference to the WWI troops from Illinois, not fighting indians.
"Courage Spirit Strength Bravery Honor Loyalty" That's what the Chief is supposed to stand for. That's not offensive, that's a great honor. Even if the dance isn't authentic, nobody's laughing. People are shouting "We love you Chief!" Heck, look up Don Giles, Former Chief of the Peoria Tribe of Oklahoma (closest living relatives to the Illiniwek Confederacy). You might be surprised. Hail to the Chief!

After 400 years of mild genocide white people still do not understand the pain and suffering they have evoked on the aboriginal peoples of North America. Though some Natives do not find acts like this offensive others do, and the dance that this close minded school puts on is not authentic. I have never seen a native running around like this doing gymnastic like toe touches I think this is ridiculous.
if you think its so ridiculous then dont watch it. being the chief is the highest honor a student could have and taking that away just doesnt make sense. theres nothing offensive about it. when the chief comes on no one leaves their seats and its quiet in respect of the chief. i think the ridiculous thing is these Natives getting mad now over something that has never harmed them in any way. its a school symbol thats important to fans, its not like theyre stealing from the tribe.
Though some Natives do not find acts like this offensive others do the dance that this close minded school puts on is not authentic. Illinois is suppost to be the land of Lincoln (he was born in Kentucky) and many people there want to uphold the herritiage of Abe I wonder how they would like it if an African American dressed as Lincoln came out and rapped a shitty version of the Gettysburg Address?
Hail to the chief and all u bastards who think its explotation to the Native Americans. an Indian reservation takes him in and teaches him the dance and their customs. So Save the Chief and to all u dumb asses who dont know what you are talkin about. You can all go to hell.
You are a fucking retard to think that ANY respecting tribe would take in ANYONE and teach them to dance. By the way, of the 10 tribes in the state NONE dance like that. WHITE PEOPLE just made it up on what they thought was a "cool" looking powwow dance. God, what an uneducated piece of shit you are. You are a waste of good sperm.
actually, if you look it up one of the chief illiniweks was actually at a native american reservation years ago where they helped him perfect the dance used today and when he left made him an honorary member of the tribe. maybe you should watch what you say and quit jumping to conclusions like everyone else seems to be doing. oh, and be human and have a little heart instead of telling people they should have never been born
Do you know that for a fact? If you don't then please don't say anything. The person selected to portray the Chief actually does go to a reservation to learn about Native American culture.
By the way. How many of you that have commented are from this school or from this community? And by "from" I mean those that live here, not just go to school here for 4 years, bitch about EVERYTHING and then move to a different state.
So stop playing games on TV, in public, etc. Having that pathetic farce of a dance, with the equally old-school racist style music, sticks your nose into our lives. The assine way the Illinois people are sucking tight to this is an embarrassment to themselves, their school, state, conference, and anybody that has to deal with them.

the chief is not a mascot, he is a symbol and means more than someone doing the dance at halftime. he stands for honor, courage, strength, honesty...when i saw the last dance tonight i cried, not because i lost a mascot, but because i lost what i stood for, what people should stand for. i wish people could see that side of it too.
annoying and racist. This started as a disgusting display in the 20's where another student would come out dressed as a Quaker and hand "Chief" a peace pipe. The costume was NOT donated by the Illini tribe, but bought from a Souix chief after it was sewn by his wife. The dance was developed by students who were Boy Scouts. It's just obnoxious Americans stealing ONCE AGAIN an image from aboriginal Americans.
bhagvita do you have ANY idea what you're talking about because at this point im throwing around the idea that you don't, and I'm fairly sure I'm 100% correct
Go to Wikipedia, though I've done more extensive research on the "Chief". If I elaborated, it would be a mini novel. Do your own research before accusing me of ignorance. Go ahead, look up the history and prove me wrong.
BTW, you can start with Wikipedia to verify what I said, then expand your research for verification...just to avoid looking ignorant. Then again, I guess if you support this spectacle, then there is no way around that.
Irishmen are a truly active part of US society and currently hold common levels of status in society. I cannot remember the last time I've met a Native American, and certainly have never met an Illiniwek...and I LIVE in Illinois. These people were oppressed and devastated by the same society that flaunts these images.
did you think the reason you haven't seen an illiniwek is because none exist, duh. They haven't in a long time either. Sorry that the u of i can't pay the illini like florida can pay the seminoles to keep their mascot
Which just proves my point, they are decimated. To make up for that, take a non-Native American, dress him up as a cartoon-ish "Chief", and have him dance (non-native dancing, mind you) around to spaghetti western music. This is a mocking display of stereotypes justified by the "we are showing pride" excuse. BTW, I never said they still existed, keep your "duh's" to yourself.
i hope you also realize that the irish are NOT respected in society and were considered very low in society for a long time. now, we are sterotyped as being constantly drunk. i could say fighting irish is offense, but you know what? i think it's funny even though i have never drank. besides, the chief dance was perfected for one of the original illiniweks by a native american tribe
The basic thing is that you will not see to many Irishmen offended by Notre Dame, but PLENTY of Native Americans are offended by the "Chief". If THEY are offended, then this automatically qualifies as directly offensive and racict, punk.
i checked the history too. It is not completely known if the souix chief sold it to the university or if it was donated to the university. the person who "bought" it didn't have much money and that's why it's possible it was donated. also, the dance the chief does was developed by someone who traveled to the sioux reservation where the tribal members helped perfect the dance and before he left inducted the chief illiniwek as an honorary tribal member.
I'm not really sure what Notre Dame's mascot has to do with this dance and mascot. I do know that whatever that guy is doing is disrespectful to a lot of people that continue to face discrimination today. But, why should that matter when it's your "tradition", right?
I don't think you've shown that getting rid of Chief Illiwek is any more than PC bullshit. Explain to me how it is disrespectful - let's follow your logic as I see it. Racist non-Native Americans decide to use a Native American as their mascot because they think they are so inferior: "Idiot indians, lets name our team after them they're so dumb!"
Native Americans aren't an active part of the US society? That sure shocks me, I think the Seminole Nation is pretty active in Oklahoma and Florida... didn't a tribe just purchase the Hard Rock Cafe chain recently? Yeah, they're not active at all...
The point I was trying to make is that Native Americans have been nearly decimated, and comparatively, their populations are predominantly smaller than those of the Irish in America. Some are doing well, and some aren't AT ALL! This University has NOTHING to do with Native Americans, which indicates exploitation. It's wrong. period.
How do you consider this racist? To me this is just portraying the native American heritage. There is nothing wrong with that. What are they going to do now, ban the Boy Scouts of America from using native American ceremonies in their events? I don't think so.
bamafan72--I suppose you support Confederate flags at all athletic events as well? After all, it is the heritage of many southern states. Is IS who they are, and damn the NCAA for trying to make people forget that, right?
I can still remember a KU vs. Illini game. All of a sudden during halftime, out comes this Native American dancing while fans were hootin' and hollarin' in the stands. Drunk fans yellin' "Chief, we love you, you're the man!" to cheesy, stereotypical "indian" music from an old western-genre movie. It was an absolute disgrace to see and I'm not even Native American. So long "Chief." You'll be etched in the memories of the U of I faithful. As for the rest of us, we won't miss a moment.
You obviously have no idea what you are talking about, and should stop commenting on things like you do. You are not of the U of I community and clearly know little to no facts on the matter beside what you think you saw and heard. Come back when you have learned both sides of the issue.
The Chief only honors our heritage as a state and as a University. It's a shame that he has to retire Wednesday. Some argue that his dance is "not authentic" but he's also a mascot, he's there to entertain as well as honor our past. Our state is ILLINOIS, the tribe is the ILLINI...this IS who we are, and damn the NCAA for trying to make people forget that.
I think we could do without all the hostility on both ends. this is obviously something both sides care deeply about, but why is it so impossible for a compromise to be reached? If the chief's dance isn't authentic, why cant we work together to make it truly authentic or something constructive, rather than try to demean each other's opinions as worthless? Just a thought. don't flame me, I'm totally sick of anti-chief flame wars.
honestly, we could do without the hostility on both sides. this is honestly something both sides deeply care about. why is it so impossible to compromise? If there are people who are displeased that it is totally inaccurate, why don't we do something constructive and work it out to be truly authentic, that does more justice to native american culture? just a thought, please don't flame me. I'm really sick and tired of that.
it's funny that a white person would say that this is done with "honor and taste"...how in the hell would you know? I am also white but have Indian ancestors, I can only imagine how offensive and degrading this is to the Native American population. I only hope that you, monexpo, never have to experience the same discrimination and prejudice in your lifetime.
Honestly, there are soo many more negative steryotypes of ethnic groups than you realize. Native-american mascots are just the ones getting the most attention now. It's really not a big deal. I myself wouldn't be suprised if in 20 years, someone, on behalf of Native Americans, protests sports team's reluctance to use Native Americans as symbols.

Said Dollarhide: "I love it when they say they are honoring us, yet they never ask us how we want to be honored, and this stereotype is not it."
spiritlakemassacre 4 years ago
No, I think it's a perfectly good argument and if you can't see that, then you truly have lost any roots to your culture. You talk about "honor" and how great a figure the "chief" is, yet you hesitate to compare this "greatness" with some of the greatest Black leaders. Are you saying Native American leaders are below Black ones? Pretty low, man...pretty low.
2bin 4 years ago
Man, the midwest must have really sucked the blackness out of you. Now I feel more sorrow than anger towards you. Don't tell me you wouldn't be insulted if the "chief" was a caricature of MLK or Malcom X, jumping around like Sambo.
2bin 4 years ago
That is a great response.

You have to realize that this white person is in red-face so compare it to black-face and they are equal.
spiritlakemassacre 4 years ago
No, no ancestors were not Fat Stealers for the number of black folk who traveled into South Dakota during the Dakota Sioux Indian Wars was a small amount but we do have stories.
spiritlakemassacre 4 years ago
Wasicu (Fat Stealers) in our language can refer to both black and white folk but mainly white. Our history with the black folk in South Dakota wasn't extensive but there were instances where the black folk sided with the Wasicu and tried to exterminate us.
spiritlakemassacre 4 years ago
There you go, you just pushed the Illini to Oklahoma and now you consider them extinct. Your philosphy follows the ways of your ancestors, the Wasicu (Fat Stealers).
spiritlakemassacre 4 years ago
I don't think anyone will ever agree on this. From my point of view, the Chief did not mock Native Americans and I don't think the Chief was started to make fun of people. I just get tired of arguing over Holidays r Chrismas or X-mas or nothing. PC has gone too far. The Chief is gone. So if it was a sore spot, let it go. It's done
Chinstrap1006 4 years ago
My question is where are his moccasins? Every regalia always begins with moccasins. So what happened?
spiritlakemassacre 4 years ago
Yeah, Nazis b/c we have an opinion that differs from yours. Good call
Chinstrap1006 4 years ago
Wouldn't it be great if you had an authentic northern plains traditional dancer who came from a family of dancers? Wouldn't it be great if you had authentic northern plains singers to sing for the dancer? A good drum group will cost $5,000 for the weekend.

Illinois kicked out the last Illini and the moved to Oklahoma and are now the Peoria. Why wasn't Oklahoma or South Dakota included in this poll for a Missouri or Illinois poll is not valid.

Contrary to popular belief, Florida State has contributed very little monetarily to the Seminole Tribe of Florida. The closest thing I can think of is actively recruiting and providing scholarships to tribe members. (Three members of the 8 man Tribal Council are FSU graduates.)

People are just becoming too bored. Protest something worthwhile, not something that keeps the memory of American Indians alive. Long live the Chief
badfish2829 5 years ago
a few points.

After 400 years of mild genocide white people still do not understand the pain and suffering they have evoked on the aboriginal peoples of North America. Though some Natives do not find acts like this offensive others do, and the dance that this close minded school puts on is not authentic. I have never seen a native running around like this doing gymnastic like toe touches I think this is ridiculous.
banjo1302 5 years ago
if you think its so ridiculous then dont watch it. being the chief is the highest honor a student could have and taking that away just doesnt make sense. theres nothing offensive about it. when the chief comes on no one leaves their seats and its quiet in respect of the chief. i think the ridiculous thing is these Natives getting mad now over something that has never harmed them in any way. its a school symbol thats important to fans, its not like theyre stealing from the tribe.
dkerr34 5 years ago
I don't really think it is so much the Natives that object to the chief, but "politically correct" white people.

annoying and racist.

Irishmen are a truly active part of US society and currently hold common levels of status in society. I cannot remember the last time I've met a Native American, and certainly have never met an Illiniwek...and I LIVE in Illinois. These people were oppressed and devastated by the same society that flaunts these images.
bhagvita 5 years ago
did you think the reason you haven't seen an illiniwek is because none exist, duh. They haven't in a long time either. Sorry that the u of i can't pay the illini like florida can pay the seminoles to keep their mascot
kratoslover1 5 years ago
Which just proves my point, they are decimated. To make up for that, take a non-Native American, dress him up as a cartoon-ish "Chief", and have him dance (non-native dancing, mind you) around to spaghetti western music. This is a mocking display of stereotypes justified by the "we are showing pride" excuse. BTW, I never said they still existed, keep your "duh's" to yourself.
bhagvita 5 years ago
i hope you also realize that the irish are NOT respected in society and were considered very low in society for a long time. now, we are sterotyped as being constantly drunk. i could say fighting irish is offense, but you know what? i think it's funny even though i have never drank. besides, the chief dance was perfected for one of the original illiniweks by a native american tribe
kratoslover1 5 years ago
youre right, the Illiniwek confederation was decimated... by other tribes of Natives.
Maxim86 5 years ago
The basic thing is that you will not see to many Irishmen offended by Notre Dame, but PLENTY of Native Americans are offended by the "Chief". If THEY are offended, then this automatically qualifies as directly offensive and racict, punk.
bhagvita 5 years ago
i checked the history too. It is not completely known if the souix chief sold it to the university or if it was donated to the university. the person who "bought" it didn't have much money and that's why it's possible it was donated. also, the dance the chief does was developed by someone who traveled to the sioux reservation where the tribal members helped perfect the dance and before he left inducted the chief illiniwek as an honorary tribal member.

pernoclone 5 years ago
I'm saying that if this dance is disrespectful so is Notre Dame's 'Fighting Irish' mascot. This entire argument is PC bullshit.
mykothopea 5 years ago
mykothopea, thank you for not being on our side of this debate, it makes us look better.
bhagvita 5 years ago
I don't think you've shown that getting rid of Chief Illiwek is any more than PC bullshit. Explain to me how it is disrespectful - let's follow your logic as I see it. Racist non-Native Americans decide to use a Native American as their mascot because they think they are so inferior: "Idiot indians, lets name our team after them they're so dumb!"
mykothopea 5 years ago
Native Americans aren't an active part of the US society? That sure shocks me, I think the Seminole Nation is pretty active in Oklahoma and Florida... didn't a tribe just purchase the Hard Rock Cafe chain recently? Yeah, they're not active at all...
mykothopea 5 years ago
The point I was trying to make is that Native Americans have been nearly decimated, and comparatively, their populations are predominantly smaller than those of the Irish in America. Some are doing well, and some aren't AT ALL! This University has NOTHING to do with Native Americans, which indicates exploitation. It's wrong. period.
bhagvita 5 years ago

I can still remember a KU vs. Illini game. All of a sudden during halftime, out comes this Native American dancing while fans were hootin' and hollarin' in the stands.

Just a thought. don't flame me, I'm totally sick of anti-chief flame wars.
dukeofurl436 5 years ago
honestly, we could do without the hostility on both sides. this is honestly something both sides deeply care about. why is it so impossible to compromise? If there are people who are displeased that it is totally inaccurate, why don't we do something constructive and work it out to be truly authentic, that does more justice to native american culture? just a thought, please don't flame me. I'm really sick and tired of that.
