I think it looks beautiful, maybe completely out of context as per the explanation but the physics of the smoke particles and fluid dynamics are incredible.
The explosion looks amazing, the only thing to implement from my point of view would be some turbulence displacement...that is what would make it look realistic and I don't think it will an GPU user as this is working in realtime without issues.
this method should never be used for explosion. The particles should rise because they're loosing density because they're really fucking hot, not because they're being pushed up.

I wish these very good graphics videos would also have a short audio commentary. I am trying to learn about Navier-Stokes equations and their application to the ether now called dark matter.
@Catloraine Adding, it looks to me like a volcano forming an island such as Iceland. Just learning about Navier-Stokes, it must be applicable to volcanos and tsunamis?
@jpmorgan187 are you fucking kidding? it's Muse, one of the best bands ever, and Shrinking Universe, some of their best tracks. go listen to Papa Roach and 50 Cent.
sure it would be cool to implement a grid based system into video games but this is far too voxelated and the texture animation based smoke that we see in current games looks pretty damn real.
i guess you think about something like an adaptive grid, which is possible to implement, but it isn'd implemented yet. the grid based fluid simulation which you can see here could be replaced by a SPH Methode to avoid the borders for the simulation.
would it be possible to add new 3d grids dynamically if the smoke needs extended space? i mean i could clearly see the cube in which the smoke is catched in. but anyway thats pretty impressive
WTF? Is that a geysey that you are trying to simulate ? Very unrealistic!!!!! Where are the ripples in the water with such a significant outburst there should have been wave propagation. What is it ? Think you are more of a multimedia guy than a cfd!
For the record, the creator mentioned that this is a Navier-Stokes simulation, meaning it's a computational fluid dynamics simulation, meaning that it wasn't performed to look like a Hollywood explosion. It was performed to study the flow behavior.
This looks like with some tweaking it could be a half-decent thunderstorm 'simulator', if not that accurate at least getting the visuals looking nice.
it looks like a whipped cream monster exploding from the water.........and the shaders dont match, it looks like it would fit better in a naruto game then this, but it still looks like alot of funt to play with
It runs in realtime on the gpu. The gpu is capable to do all the costly computations in parallel, therefor you can achieve a this in real time. I move the camera through the scene with wasd keys and mouse like in an ego-shooter game. Sorry for my bad english^^
Promises in nVidia's promo demos not always match with Real-World applications. That's why we do not see the super duper nVidia technologies cannot have the world domination....
Well it suck man, you need like 4 whole life time to get it right.
Seriously, did you catch the detail about it being real time? That's the impressive aspect. You told the guy his video sucks, I told you your grammar sucks. I fail to see the problem. In any event, take your un-constructive criticism elsewhere.
I told you your grammar needs work, and I heavily implied that I enjoyed the video quite a lot. For the record, that last post by you was much better phrased.
I think it looks beautiful, maybe completely out of context as per the explanation but the physics of the smoke particles and fluid dynamics are incredible.

Nice try but you need to work with the attributes. Fluids is the correct procedure but it does not look like an explosion. Good try though.
