If you were already watching him, you shouldn't have had the alarm and instead, just tackled him from behind when he bent over to pick up the package. A lot more dangerous, but at least he would have shat his pants twice as hard. Another idea would be to shine a bright ass light at his eyes and his vision would be obscured for at least a few minutes, giving you enough time and advantage to take him down. This way it's easier to get away with assault as opposed to shooting him.
