  • I love this version, you do this song justice and then some, thank you!

  • I think I first heard this song in 1971, by Joan Baez. Those were the latter days of Folk Rock. It was popular. Your rendition of this song is exceptional, reminds me of Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Joni Mitchell, Nana Mouskouri, and my personal favorite, Judith Durham. Your voice is as good as these and I thank you for sharing.

    -Ez

  • got it, coffeescup. AWESOME!

  • f*cking incredible man! beautiful voice. never heard of her but i will try to slowly immerse myself in her music. is her name lemonflower?

  • This is utterly gorgeous -- your voice does the song poignant justice. Have you considered a version with the old chorus? "Shule, shule, shulagra, sure and sure and he loves me. When he comes back we'll married be, Johnny has gone for a soldier."

    Joseph Strider

  • WOW!

  • Que lindo como cantas. Me recuerda cuando estudiava medicina en escocia.!

  • Well done! you really captured the sorrow. its so much sadder in this version

  • Good song.

What interests me is that there seem to be several different versions.

I've noticed that in some variations of this song is narrated in third (first?) person meaning that there's a narrator singing it rather than the woman.

Also I think there's another version called "Johnny I hardly knew ye" and I've heard of a funny Scottish song called "Johnny where's your trousers?" that I think might be to that same tune.

  • Beautiful!

    I'm in LOVE! : P

  • Always loved this song but this absolutely outstanding - beautiful!!!!

  • Gorgeous voice.

  • Absolutely excellent.

  • this is by far one of the best versions of this song i have herd.. not bad at all...

  • AWESOME!!!

  • Wonderful singing, you should go pro!

  • Great job. You are better than Celtic Woman. Thanks for sharing.

  • i cant find this song on itunes do u plan to put it on?

  • It's kind of complicated, but I can't put only one song on itunes at a time. I have to put an entire album and there is just a lot more to it :( Thanks for listening anyway

  • unbelievable voice!!!

  • I'm deeply impressed - very well done!

  • wow. amazingly done. a great version, too, except for the dress part. in the original it says petticoats, which actually imply a totally different meaning. only harlots had red petticoats. so it's quite different from a red dress. but still amazing.

  • According to the Tudor Tailor red dye was the most common colour for petticoats amongst all classes :-)

But I was always told that the dyeing was symbollic of her becoming a whore whether petticoats or dress

and there is no original...its a folk song...it evolves :-)

    peace
