such a haunting and mournful yet beautiful song. no other has sung it better that I have heard. I keep coming back to this one. this song was in Ken Burns civil war documentary. I remembered that you had sung is so well.
I have just uploaded this song and want to thank you for your version which helped me in my own interpretation. As so many people have commented, you have the perfect voice for this song.
beautyful singing, but honey: dont pick your guitarstrings in a klezmer rhythm...dont destroy that celtic rythm which is veeeeerrrrrrryyyyyyyy important honey!
You are the most amazing thing I have ever heard... I can't believe how devastatingly beautiful your voice is... I am totally mesmerized by your magic.
I finally figured out what "I'll dye my dress, I'll dye it red.." means. Another version ends that verse with "...Until my parents wish me dead!" It's too sad to spell out here.
Would you please do a rendition of the Civil War love song 'Lorena'. Your voice is so beautiful, it would lend itself perfectly in with this haunting tune.
@Planetar11 I agree! more of these old traditional songs. Perfect voice for them. Lorena would be great, as well as some stephen foster and old celtic and traditional songs from the UK..
I think I first heard this song in 1971, by Joan Baez. Those were the latter days of Folk Rock. It was popular. Your rendition of this song is exceptional, reminds me of Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Joni Mitchell, Nana Mouskouri, and my personal favorite, Judith Durham. Your voice is as good as these and I thank you for sharing.
This is utterly gorgeous -- your voice does the song poignant justice. Have you considered a version with the old chorus? "Shule, shule, shulagra, sure and sure and he loves me. When he comes back we'll married be, Johnny has gone for a soldier."
If you were on itunes I would definitely buy this song... am adding you to my favories.
What a haunting and lovely performance. As a descendant of men who fought in the American Revolution, I thank you. This brings me closer to them and to their wives, who lamented their going off to war.
You are to me my insperation.Seriously you are real talent .This is what I call talent. You sing beautiful.I truly want a cd with your recordings. You are great.Keep on singing and recording!
To be honest, I was expecting this to be some random person with a guitar and Garage Band. I was completely blown away! You have a fantastic voice, and this is an awesome song!
I love this sound, which is authentic for the southern U.S., where these old Celtic songs migrated with the populace. Beautiful. Thank you for keeping a great tradition alive...
Not to lessen your performance by any means, i find your version very beautiful i must say, but here is another accoustic version perfomed in St.Gilles in the Fields by Megson. Just perform a search for Megson - Butternut Hill and be amazed by the ambience.
I found this version here and the one there the most terrific ones.
i agree with coolanddark you are the best who sings this, well maybe not better than the person who made this who lived the song but yah u sound awsome, good whatever fills that blank

Very nice voice. There is a talonsoft game called 1776 that has this song on it with a flute playing along. That is the first time I heard it, and fell in love with it.

wow. amazingly done. a great version, too, except for the dress part. in the original it says petticoats, which actually imply a totally different meaning. only harlots had red petticoats. so it's quite different from a red dress. but still amazing.

According to the Tudor Tailor red dye was the most common colour for petticoats amongst all classes :-)
But I was always told that the dyeing was symbollic of her becoming a whore whether petticoats or dress
