hi, i am completely blown away with your playing and I am just wondering why you choose to use direct drive pedals? I currently use tama speedcobras and i like them a lot but i have never had to chance to try a direct drive double pedal. could you tell me what you like from the direct drive over a chain or strap drive pedal.
First off, you are an AMAZING drummer. your style and skill is unmatched! I've recently switched my set-up to match yours and to be honest, I find it to be very comfortable. I have two questions though. 1- could you maybe do a short "video tour" of your kit?? I'd like to see how your hats and pedals are set up down below. and 2- is there any way you could ever do a playalong video to the Periphery song "Next Please"?? I would love to see that!
Dude you're awesome and I love the way you developed a new way to set up your kit. I like that you challenged yourself throughout your playing, youre amazing dude
Im not a drummer, but I am a 7-string guitar player. I thought it might be useful to watch this video just to keep up to date on a current VERY influential player + glad I did. Thanks for taking the time to do through your setup travis. I can approach my drummer with some of these ideas now too.
Yes u should defienetly sit higher up cuz i am 6'1" and i found out that wen u r higher up u have more mobility in ur foot/feet to move over the pedals and gain speed. And it would also be better for the toms yes because if u use toms over a bass drum or near it if ur higher it will be easing on ur arms to reach ur toms so they wont seem to be higher than u can reach or strain to reach. P.S. U will also use less energy wen ur higher up cuz u wont have to work as hard to play, esp
Hi, I'm trying a pseudo open-stance style currently, with just the one pair of hats in the usual place but with your kind of tom setup, and a fairly regular cymbal setup. I really like the feel of the tom there, but I'm struggling getting the hats into a place where they're easy to avoid when playing the tom (I'm still crossing over when I play the hats). Should I move myself to the left and "straighten out" my drive shaft? Currently the slave pedal is angled inwards towards me a little.
@shaftninja Thanks! I kinda assumed the distance wouldn't matter since you're not doing a lot of crossing over but I'll give that a go next time I'm able to play :D Also one final question - do you suggest I sit higher up to get a better feel over the toms? I'm tall (6'2") and I sit with my legs angled maybe 10-15 degrees to the floor, just a little above perfectly level. Also, will that make my pedal control a little easier? Sorry for the bombardment!
@Mp5Drummer hey man my brother did this set up with his band with the single hihats in the reverse position he plays left handed what he did to fix the problem of the hihats placement he put a camp on the hihat stand and placed my rack tom on the clamp and works perfect try it out he wants me to record a video of him playing on the kit and showing the set up and if you have any questions you can talk to him on yahoo messanger at cory_8_goth@ yahoo.com
Travis, as every drummer with amazing technical ability and musical feel is being linked to Dream Theater, how would feel about auditioning for the role? Would you ever consider a larger drumkit in order to play in a band like Dream Theater?
@shaftninja hey in your guitar pro I am a drummer only but I am wanting to compose some stuff in my head and I don't hardly know anything bout guitar pro and I downloaded is there any websites that you can tell me that helped you learn about using guitar pro?
I accidentally deleted the guy/gal's comment inquiring if I went to college for music or was self-taught. My apologies, coffee mug was in the way and I misfired on my mouse! Haha.
I took private lessons for a number of years then afterward (and during) subscribed to an insatiable sense of autodidactism, all while maintaining a pretty intense practice regime.
Man, I've gotta say, you're unbelievable. I'm not actually a drummer, but I write/record/produce all of my own stuff, and program all of the drums (kinda like a guy you know) on superior. The only kit preset that I use anymore is based on your SEA stuff. But I have to ask, how on earth do you come up with the fills and rolls you do? I don't necessarily want to rip off your style, but I want it to sound like I am ;) or like I've got a bitchin drummer on call for whatever
@tyblair18 Thank you kindly! Generally, my parts come from both a deep grasp of rhythm and my current facility on the drum set. However, I always arrive at the 'end product' via a multitude of 'modules' and ideas that are uniquely me.
@tyblair18 Hopefully that didn't come off as haughty; I just meant I'm always going to maintain my identity when interpreting/composing parts for tunes because I play like myself, just as you play as yourself and so on...
@shaftninja not haughty at all. i guess all of the rhythm and time signature change type stuff really is intrinsic. or something that will take a lot of listening/studying to achieve. but at least i've found someone to watch who obviously has it down. thanks for responding, btw, it really means a lot to me
Your sticks ¿? I have notice that when you stroke the drum the hit sounds pretty solid ... is it very heavy , or the normal 5A ¿? its the way you hit the drum, or the way the drum kit is mix ¿?
You have inspired me dude !? you have start a revolution with this type of playing a whole new school
i admire you so much! dude....im gonna switch my kit like yours....you rule man!....keep replying to your fans...dont stop if you become too famous....take care :)
hey Travis, I have the demon drive double pedals and it seems when I'm practicing I can never get the tension to my liking. The pedals as you know have an amazing range of extremely tense to extremely lax, what is the tension on your pedals like? Do you use the stock beaters (felt) or did you swap those for something different? Iron Cobra beaters perhaps? Do you use a click pad badge on your kick drum batter head? Thanks man, you rock!
Travis, you are one of the more humble drummers I have come across. You stumbled upon an extremely innovative way to play drums, and for that you have become an extremely innovative player. Keep up the great work, and maybe I'll buy one of those shirts!
As papermateman11 said, I was wondering if you could have a vid/explanation on your warm-up exercises; as applied to a drum pad, drum set, duration of exercises, hands and feet, independence, etc... ALSO, left hand exercises! Mine has a mind of its own at times.
Thanks Travis and I look forward to more of your videos!
So I have nowhere to play a kit at anytime I please and don't wanna invest in a digital kit (doesn't feel right). I already practice by just air drumming or jumping on any kit I can haha. Any good tips on building double bass speed/stamina off the kit? Or just general exercises to keep your legs from cramping when doing bursts etc..
@shaftninja Hey Travis, you mentioned at one point you played a 3 piece setup. I've recently started playing a 3 piece set up and like it too. But I have one dislike about the 3 piece setup. I dislike the you're only getting that one deep tom sound. I guess in a way it doesn't sound completely "full" enough to me. I was wondering if you had the same problem while playing that setup and if so, how you managed to "get around it?" (for like of better words)
when do u use your truth drumset? cause my band played a show with u guys at uncle pleasant's in louisville and i noticed you were using the drumset from the previous band.
I think you need to make a complete autobiography mr orbinator. Everything from when you were a kid up till now. For example: what sticks have you used in the past and if you were to create a signature stick, how would it be like? Any details on leaving Periphery? Stick Tricks? If any, please post videos. Marching? I think so. Could you please create drum videos to more bulb songs like totla mad, colde mark, this sentence is false, all new materials, zyglrox, ms dopertunity.
Dude, hell yes. I'm going to buy one of the shirts.
I've only recently heard of you, Mr. Orbin, but I've become quite a big fan. I'm mainly a guitar player, but I love playing the drums, too, and I'm astounded by your style. I'm also very, very interested in giving it a shot. I know I'm going to, but, I'm gonna suck, haha.
You're an amazing drummer, and very inspiring, my man. Keep up the awesome work.
How do you afford all of this stuff? Drums are not cheap, so just wondering, does SEA Profits pay for it all or are you just rich or in a LOT of debt lol.
Travis what history do you have with private drumset lessons? Can you recommend any learning materials for stick control, coordination, linear beats/fills or anything else? Also, maple or birch drums do you have a preference?
ive been searching everywhere but still cant find the answer...what did you use for your cymbal stack when you were still using sabians? i fucking LOVE the sound you got with it
burning questions...What double bass pedals do you use? Have you tried other pedals and noticed any significant difference especially with the slave pedal? I am asking because as much as I try to adjust my AXIS AAx, the left foot always feels sloppy and weak. I use to use two bass drums and did not have this problem with two separate pedals, but I want to save the room. Any suggestions?
Hey bro, it would be totally legit if you could describe/walkthrough your favorite exercises and warm-ups. Particularly those involving left foot and left hand dominance involving the open hand/open stance technique. Thanks man.
Hey man! I'm psyched you posted that video about your set-up. I saw SEA last summer i think at Harper's Ferry and you rocked out! Since then I've started switching to open handed playing and my left hand is already much stronger. Also, your creative set-up has motivated me to find a set-up that's more customized for me and less run of the mill. Keep up the good work!
i just need to know this, how do you write the drums to songs? do you memorize the patterns to fit guitars for example icarus lives? or does it just come naturally to remember the counts and feel or groove of things?
I just want you to know that you're awesome. And you've inspired me to start drumming again. I can't stop playing Icarus Lives while sitting on the bus.
no matter what anyone says, you have truly been a big part in starting a new generation of kit placement and true mechanic/ambidextrous train of thought... on top of that you are humble and personable, i'll hunt you down for lessons if I have to ;)
Travis, let me first say that I believe you are the most underrated musicians in today's music scene. You have such an amazing sound quality and the independence you have is hard to come for drummers these days. I want to learn your technique! It looks as though you use a lot of finger and arm movement as compared to wrist motion, yet you can play incredibly fast rhythms. Could you possibly post a video about your technique or maybe about your history and career? -a drummer from another mother
Travis, I believe you are the most underrated drummers out on the music scene. Your quality of sound and incredible independence is something hard to come by with drummers these days. Please teach me your hand technique! It looks as though you use a lot of arm and finger movement with minimization of wrist, yet you can play extremely fast rhythms. Could you maybe post a video about that or the history of your drumming career? - a drummer from another mother
Recommended books/practice routines for ambidextrous mobility around a minimalist set-up like yours?
Also:
Are you offering drum lessons at Transmission Fest. in Wocester, MA? I'd totally hit you up on that, it'd be amazing just to talk to you and get some ideas and practice material and techniques. My bands playing the day after SEA :(.
Question 1.. What are your feelings towards other drummers mimicking you're set up and your ambidextrous style? Question 2.. What is your main goal as a musician and or in life.. actually both.. haha
DOOD!!!!! i watched this then went a and bought a t-shirt! HA! I discovered your stuff not to long ago and watch these videos everyday. VERY TECH AND SOLID! I am the drummer for Gebular out of Aberdeen Washington. Keep the videos rollin. Love the style and progressions. Well done sir!
@shaftninja Even though you are beyond an excellent drummer, there has to be at least a couple things in the drumming world that challenge you. What challenges are you possibly facing right now in drumming, and what methods do you use to overcome these challenges?
do you feel like the remo blacks are a decent head for there price im useing eveans heads and i love them just trying to get an opinion i think you great and have a very diffrent style so i would love to no ur opinion
Hey man...Much respect for your kit and how you play. I'm also very interested in open handed playing but haven't had the time to devote a lot of practice to my left side. I think people shouldn't call the setup "weird" as I feel that every drummer loves to tweak and change their setup to suit them, ergo no two setups are exactly the same. You've just taken it further than other people dare to, with an amazing result
I ordered a shirt in the middle of this video because I love your drumming so much. Lol. You are my number one drummer right now. I just need you to know that. Keep up the amazing work man.
Awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome!!!! I think you did a great job on the video. Thank you very much for all this info. You answered MANY of my own questions. You are a big influence to me (I'm a few years older then you) and I very much appreciate all your vids and look foward to seeing and hearing great things from you!
@trio952 I would recommend getting in the practice of hitting your cymbals no harder than what there ment to be hit. If you want more sound get a cymbal with more sound. Smashing on your cymbals will only get them cracked and destroyed, not anymore volume. Hope this helped you in some way or another. Being a heavy hitter I once struggled with the same problem.
@rockeroftheband1 I've seen a few videos floating around online and some of my students have taken it on. I'm on no crusade to change the way people set up their drums, but It's highly flattering!
So i play consistent rim shots in my playing style and im playing a 5.5 x 14 (i think) Buddy Rich Signature snare i mean the thing sounds amazing BUT the lug closest to my contact point for the rim shot ALWAYS comes lose after playing for like 3-5 minutes so it slowly goes from amazing to a flarp sound, so the question is i know you play your rimshots too so what do you do when/if you encounter this problem?
Great video, Travis! It's really cool hearing about another drummer's journey of musical and technical development. The whole way though, I was comparing yours to my own development and we're very similar. I remember emulating Carter in high school, having the same reaction to Thomas Lang, and Mangini is a HUGE influence for me now.
Anywho, I'll get to an actual question...what kind of influence, if any, have Terry Bozzio, Grant Collins (and Minnemann, for that matter) had on your playing?
I wish I had a drummer that not only played as badass as you do but understands the process of creating music as you also do. Keep up being badass Travis!
Oh and one more thing, I am glad to hear that you pronounce Carters last name CORRECTLY!!!!!!!!! So many people say it like how you say BEAU in beatiful -ford.
lol im def gettin one of those shirts. your drumming is amazing and it has inspired me to utilize a dual hi-hat set up which in itself gave me a new perspective on drumming and in my opinion, made my playing sound more fresh and better. so now people are going to start to hear some serious travis orbin influence from my band in the future. thanks so much dude!!!
Man, You have inspired me to become a way better drummer!!! I have been trying to use my left hand and my left foot a lot more and I'm using a lot of up strokes on my china now..... All in all you have made me look at drumming in a hole new way!!!! :)
#1 I (being a drummer) would love to know, how you got your amazing ghost note writing style to where it is..how do you work in your mind to create such a technical both hand ghost beat...
#2 Whats the best way to go about getting a TRX endorsement.. i love their cymbals and would love to have a go at getting one!
A good way to start playing around with open hand drumming is to simply stick a china (or some kind of stack) above your hi-hat. Seems simple, but it really helped me a ton. It changed the way I play from the ground up. Thanks for all the top notch videos Travis!
This is a pretty easy question and probably doesn't need to be answered in a video, but for a drummer (me) who can play complex patterns on the double kick, who can't sustain constant high speed, what's the best way to really build it up? I would ask some ridiculous death metal drummer from something like brain drill but I wanted to ask someone who actually plays a diverse style.
I like many others would like to see a snare tuning video detailing what snares you use, how tight they are, what heads you use top and bottom and how you tension them. However, if you ever decide to resume the Periphery play along videos; it would be great to see "The Walk". Oh lastly, do the T-shirts ship to the UK? Thanks in advance Travis, keep the videos coming :)
i personally would like to see a) a video depicting your practice techniques and tips for improving ambidexterity and b) a snare tuning video because your snare sound is awesome. And c) how you approach writing music and how you approach the drumkit while you are writing. Although i am a drummer and i love to play and i want to become better i think my hand is better suited for composition so knowing how someone of your technical proficiency writes might help me to better my own music.
I'm sold. I've probably asked anything and everything that was on my mind and Travis has honestly taken the time and answered them nicely. Plus, this was a big request of mine (and many others) to put up a drum set up video. Seeing this made my day.
I always wondered. You tend to write a lot of your drum parts out in notation...does that feel natural? I mean, do you approach the kit and write the notation as you go, or do you do this prior to playing as some kind of outline? I myself don't have a vast understanding of notation as far as percussion goes (beyond rudiments and the like) so I always wondered why you used it for songs. I mean, do you feel it's easier than "feeling a song out" so to speak?
travis your the man. Ive always hoped that you would do a video actuaully walking us through your whole set up with the kit on camera. Cant wait for your next vid !!!!!!!!!!
dudeee i really respect you as a musician.. i watch at least one f your videos every day cause you sincerily are an inspiration dude i thought it was impossible to reach that druming level but you did... i work very hard every day to be a better drummer.... keep drumming and lots of lucks in your career! hope to see you in modern drummer one day

New question: How many drum books do you own? I recently began playing and made the decision to buy a couple books of my own.
DeliciousNubbs 1 year ago
I think you need to make a complete autobiography mr orbinator. Everything from when you were a kid up till now. For example: what sticks have you used in the past and if you were to create a signature stick, how would it be like? Any details on leaving Periphery? Stick Tricks? If any, please post videos. Marching? I think so. Could you please create drum videos to more bulb songs like totla mad, colde mark, this sentence is false, all new materials, zyglrox, ms dopertunity.
UroborosNkono 1 year ago
Dude, hell yes. I'm going to buy one of the shirts.
I've only recently heard of you, Mr. Orbin, but I've become quite a big fan. I'm mainly a guitar player, but I love playing the drums, too, and I'm astounded by your style. I'm also very, very interested in giving it a shot. I know I'm going to, but, I'm gonna suck, haha.
You're an amazing drummer, and very inspiring, my man. Keep up the awesome work.

burning questions...What double bass pedals do you use?

Hey man great video, will definitely get a tee!
My question would be this:
Recommended books/practice routines for ambidextrous mobility around a minimalist set-up like yours?
Also:
Are you offering drum lessons at Transmission Fest. in Wocester, MA? I'd totally hit you up on that, it'd be amazing just to talk to you and get some ideas and practice material and techniques. My bands playing the day after SEA :(.
Amazing video. Thanks for the info and bio!
Later,

Hey man...Much respect for your kit and how you play. I'm also very interested in open handed playing but haven't had the time to devote a lot of practice to my left side. I think people shouldn't call the setup "weird" as I feel that every drummer loves to tweak and change their setup to suit them, ergo no two setups are exactly the same. You've just taken it further than other people dare to, with an amazing result

What are the best drum books/videos you would recommend (other than the rhythm knowledge) for someone who is interested in a style similar to yours?
drummachine5787 1 year ago
@trio952 I would recommend getting in the practice of hitting your cymbals no harder than what there ment to be hit. If you want more sound get a cymbal with more sound. Smashing on your cymbals will only get them cracked and destroyed, not anymore volume. Hope this helped you in some way or another. Being a heavy hitter I once struggled with the same problem.

#1 I (being a drummer) would love to know, how you got your amazing ghost note writing style to where it is..how do you work in your mind to create such a technical both hand ghost beat...
#2 Whats the best way to go about getting a TRX endorsement.. i love their cymbals and would love to have a go at getting one!

Disregard my last question, this one's better.
What's your recording set up?!?!?!
If it's a little cheap I might get excited.
ShadowPyke 1 year ago
A good way to start playing around with open hand drumming is to simply stick a china (or some kind of stack) above your hi-hat. Seems simple, but it really helped me a ton. It changed the way I play from the ground up. Thanks for all the top notch videos Travis!
norka99 1 year ago
This is a pretty easy question and probably doesn't need to be answered in a video, but for a drummer (me) who can play complex patterns on the double kick, who can't sustain constant high speed, what's the best way to really build it up? I would ask some ridiculous death metal drummer from something like brain drill but I wanted to ask someone who actually plays a diverse style.
ShadowPyke 1 year ago
I like many others would like to see a snare tuning video detailing what snares you use, how tight they are, what heads you use top and bottom and how you tension them. However, if you ever decide to resume the Periphery play along videos; it would be great to see "The Walk". Oh lastly, do the T-shirts ship to the UK? Thanks in advance Travis, keep the videos coming :)
ExecuteCommand 1 year ago
i personally would like to see a) a video depicting your practice techniques and tips for improving ambidexterity and b) a snare tuning video because your snare sound is awesome. And c) how you approach writing music and how you approach the drumkit while you are writing. Although i am a drummer and i love to play and i want to become better i think my hand is better suited for composition so knowing how someone of your technical proficiency writes might help me to better my own music.
shiftdrummer1991 1 year ago 2
I'm sold. I've probably asked anything and everything that was on my mind and Travis has honestly taken the time and answered them nicely. Plus, this was a big request of mine (and many others) to put up a drum set up video. Seeing this made my day.
real1acer 1 year ago
I always wondered. You tend to write a lot of your drum parts out in notation...does that feel natural? I mean, do you approach the kit and write the notation as you go, or do you do this prior to playing as some kind of outline? I myself don't have a vast understanding of notation as far as percussion goes (beyond rudiments and the like) so I always wondered why you used it for songs. I mean, do you feel it's easier than "feeling a song out" so to speak?
Etherion 1 year ago
travis your the man. Ive always hoped that you would do a video actuaully walking us through your whole set up with the kit on camera. Cant wait for your next vid !!!!!!!!!!
