Seen these in Newport South Wales U.K. sometime in the early 80's bought their demo done a stage dive and had my front tooth knocked out butted some geezer while I was flying those were the days eh?D.R.I. NOT D.I.Y.
Back in the day, these guys, SOD, Ludichrist, Cro Mags, Overkill, they all played dives in NYC. Tickets were cheap. Fights in the Bronx, chicks in Brooklyn, cops in Manhattan, memories in the mind. The shows were in small venues and couldn't ever be duplicated. Never has a scene been so locked in with the music. Argue for the Beats, the Haight or the bi-coastal punk machine or any of today's manufactured crap but you'll never see the of kind visceral passion that made a night like this again.
@Haroldscotclark How the hell do I lose? Don't be a fucking idiot. I asked you a simple question. I have gone to pbc plenty of times in Virginia Beach.
The 80's were the best man,Back when punks were scary and badass, too bad we'll never get to relive them. Now we have little pussy ass emo and scene kids who claim to be modern punks, fuck them.
Thrash = crossover. Also, no such thing as "thrash metal"... that means "crossover punk-metal metal" if you expand it. doesn't make sense really. it's all just speed metal. Thrash is DRI, Cryptic Slaugher, COC, etc.
@KSava That's somewhat true. I still consider "thrash metal" to be "thrash/speed metal" because it combines both the punk stylings of "crossover thrash" and "thrashcore". The only difference is that the songs are longer. Similiar shouted vocal style, riffing and similiar beats. I understand the punk/skater kids of the 80's called it "thrash" and the corporate European labels called it "thrash metal". Makes no difference to me. It just kicks ass. That's a good label for it. "Kick fuckin' ass!"
This is exactly why they named the album crossover. To unite the Punk Rockers and Thrashers. Punk Rockers were already starting to get into Slayer, Motorhead, and Metallica(back in the day) so D.R.I. , thats when they flipped their sound to the Mutual to get the Metal Heads out to see Bad Religion, Minor Threat, and Final Conflict.
I'm glad to live in a time (and area) where Metal and Punk fans are starting to get along like they should. We still have long way to go, let's keep it up!
The Minneapolis show in 1989 was insane, they got unplugged during the encore. Than the manager guy was on stage telling us all to get the hell out. They didn't like all the diving, so anyways, when the suit and tie guy was on stage, Spike Cassidy hit him in the back with his guitar, and knocked him off the stage.
@obscurouse go get fucked u cocksucker,u eat shit for a nickel, then get bashed in the mouth for an encore, and if i was there,i`d rape ur arse with a knife! GUTLESS CUNT!
Tooth Chip and Thrash" HistoricalShow.... Felix Griffin is so unbelievable to watch,Josh,Kurt and Spike.AMAZING kick assPunk/Thrash Masters... wish I saw this line up live.. Doug from Toronto
About 3 decades with a bunch of sub-genres. If you want to go back to the roots, the best thing is to look at bands that came out of the DC and LA punk scenes and pursue it from there.
Basically try listening to early Black Flag, Bad Brains, Circle Jerks, Minor Threat, and The Dead Kennedys (they were a punk band, but 'In God We Trust' is a decidedly more 'hardcore' release).
About 3 decades of evolution with a lot of sub-genres carved out of hardcore. If you want to go back to the roots, then you'd have to look at LA and DC punk bands. Hardcore is just an abbreviation of 'hardcore punk' and was just an evolution of the original punk from the late 70s with a focus on being faster/harder.
So I'd say start with Bad Brains, early Black Flag (early singles and Damaged), Minor Threat, the Circle Jerks, and The Dead Kennedys, and D.O.A.
