Just saw Al Stewart in concert -- Oct 2009. Amazing voice. Sang several songs off this album along with historic great songs. Live performance very good quality. Highly recommend seeing Al live in concert.
Saw him in 76 at hamersmith odeon in london and seen him loads of times since. A great musician who still wirtes the most wonderful melodic songs just listen to the guitar solo in this song.
Saw Al on Sunday in Southampton and just got back from the Bristol gig. He peformed this with Laurence Juber and Gabby Young tonight. Amazing, nothing more to say really.
One day, I'll make one of his concerts (again). I was introduced to this guy in college by a teaching asst. I RARELY meet anyone that even knows who he is. It's too bad that we Americans prefer whats marketed to us rather than seek out something special and unique like AS.
I saw him live on friday in the U.K. and he was magnificent, accompanied by Laurence Juber who is an extraordinary guitarist.
You're absolutely right though about the U.S. music industry and it's unfortunate inability to successfully promote 'real music'. There is so much popular garbage being fed to the public who may not have the motivation to seek out the real quality which exists elsewhere.
What, 12 songs every 3 years? That's not what I call prolific. On the other hand, you are right that his material is absolutely stellar. I consider A Beachful of Shells to be the best album of all time - by anyone! (Apologies to SOAL fans.)
Al's manager Neville Judd told me that Al has been at his most prolific in the last couple years. In fact, he had enough good material for 3 CD's at the time of the "Sparks" release. But, production costs are astronomical, so thank God we have this outstanding work. BTW, I do love "Beach", but I still rate a few of his better, especially the phenomenal "Between the Wars", which is my favorite album ever.
This is one of Al's greatest songs; it's a masterpiece production on the "Sparks of Ancient Light" CD. Everyone should own this gem. 8 of the 12 songs are fabulous, and the others are good as well. Keep rockin', Al!!! "Elvis at the Wheel" is also phenomenal, and crosses genres.

Like William McKinley is my all-time favorite song. So amazingly clever on so many levels. Bravo, Al.

Hanno is honestly one of my favorite songs on the album. It is a bit pop sounding but it's just so... well crafted.
