  • @revacohen not sure you quite got me there love

  • He's quite a Renaissance man. And he's so expressive. He looked at times like he was about to cry.

  • I've heard Michael Flatley can't talk, he can only express himself by dance

  • @patchbod He can talk. He appeared as the host once on "Superstars of Dance," and he's quite dynamic.

  • Fantastic.

  • Eat my turds Fenian hoore.

  • I think teh piece he plays is called "The coolin". Have it on an Uileann pipes CD

  • Wats he playing the skin flute lol

  • @synthpathetic Ooops. I'm sorry for my ignorance. Thank you for the information, synthpathetic! :)

  • I love the part when the indian guy with some kind of drum kicks in. Anyone knows the name of that instrument?

  • @Shomazoo

    Bodhran

    Said..."Boar Ron"

  • @beachhutblues In Southern Ireland they pronounce it "Bow Ron"

  • @thefireaflame

I don't know if you'd noticed but Ireland has a north, east, and west, too.

    No-one likes a smart-arse mate.

  • @beachhutblues I guess ignorance must make you popular then.

  • won't deny it he IS an amazing Dancer and now that i've seen this a great flute player but he's still full of himself

  • @QueenofmyUnderworld yeah, but mostly full of himself :/

  • @QueenofmyUnderworld If you do not know him personally, how can you know that he is "full of himself?"

I don't know him but I had the pleasure of meeting and talking with him and I can assure you, he is anything but.

  • @raymonda100 if you ever have the chance watch lord of the dance all the way through and you may find where i get the "full of himself" vibe from, though you are right i don't know him personally, it's more a fact of opinion on how he presents himself on stage

  • @QueenofmyUnderworld

Of COURSE he is "full of himself"...and he has right to be..

    ALL brilliant performers are arrogant.

THAT is why they ARE who they ARE!

    DOH!

    Welcome to the real world!

  • Being a flute player myself....AMAZING<3

  • Phrasing??

  • I know the first (slow) part of this medley to be, "The Coolin." Does anyone else know it by another title? Nice playing, for sure!

  • @Vikingfifer hi, the second tune is the masons apron

  • He's absolutely amazing! I love him!

  • Does anyone know of what kinf of flute Mr Flatley is playing?

  • They should have cut some of the choral singing from the original Riverdance video and included this!

  • Speaking as somebody familiar with Irish traditional music, let me say he's certainly no slouch on the flute! Quite impressive, one can see why the great Seamus Tansey praised him.

  • @LarrySanger

i'll let him know you said that if i ever the chance to meet 'em myself. lolz

  • As if being a world class dancer and choreographer wasn't enough, this Irish American dude from Chicago also plays the flute.

  • no words ..just thank you, thats all

  • oh gosh, the HAIR!

  • LOL at the person who said Flatley is better than Molloy

    LOL

  • awesome

  • They shouldn't have cut that out. Thanks for posting!

  • brilliant . . . . .

  • Tommy hayes 5*

  • at 1.44 look at the drum guy goos crazyXDXD

    love michael..:D he is awesome

  • Awesome! I play the flute and this dude is freakin awesome....

  • yes, he was born in america, but you can see he was raised to learn all about irish culture, esp dance and music, WOW, WOW, WOW.

  • Flatley is probably the best irish flute player there has ever been his skill is amazing i am also a big fan of Molloy but overall i think for creativity Michael shades it

  • But he's playing Molloy's version.... or more accurately McGuire's version. But he definitely doesn't play it as well as Molloy - the tone isn't there, nor is his fingering as good - he has to use his lips to achieve the ending. But he is bloody good, even if he is a yank! :D

  • I don't really know anything about flute music but it sounded like he played it better later on in LOTD Feet of Flames (practice makes perfect lol). Still beautiful music either way though :).

  • OK, so he plays the floute too???...isn´t he amazing???

  • @Silviatube2006

He's actually rated world class on his flute. Dancer, musician and an incredible choreographer.

  • @Silviatube2006

He doesn't just play, the version he does in the Feet of Flames dvd, albeit his facial expressions are manical, is among the best I've heard it and only surpassed on the proper irish pipe instrument.

  • @mickthewack

i freaking agree, his faces are the funniest thing i have ever seen, and i can't watch him play, because i end up laughing to loud to hear anything he plays. I can only listen to him play.

  • @Silviatube2006 ahah yes, is there no end to his talents!?

  • Ok, that's the masons apron. :) Great tune!

  • What's the name of the tune in 1:00?

  • Caraio! A bicha esculacha mesmo! Toca muito! Pena que o visual não é dos melhores...

  • WOW. I had no idea Flatley could play flute! This is freakin' awesome!

Too bad they cut this out of the U.S. broadcast. :(

  • Wow I had no idea that Flatley did this song anywhere else but Feet of Flames in 1998! AWESOME!

  • omg omg i love it! it's awesome <3

  • phenomenal

  • Der Vokuhila muss aber oft atmen.

  • OMG the drummer man is on my bodhran tutorial video!!!!

  • Michael Flately introduced Irish Music to the entire world and Celtic woman is keeping it in the spotlights. :>)

  • @Blogengezer don't forget celtic thunder! they got it going too!!!

  • Great!

  • This is lovely, he plays this for his nan I think.

  • I never understood why this was cut out of the American video.

  • Heheh he looks sweet the man on the drum-thing:D Nice done by MF, And is to find on the old Riverdance dvd;)

  • Where, on which DVD, can I find this exceptional performance ???? Thanks a ton !!!

  • michael flatley is an amazing flute player aswell as a amazing irish dancer. Im happy to say that i play the flute and also irish dance =] and my dance teacher dances with him in celtic tiger.

  • oh God I wish I could play like that... and I'd like to have such a wooden flute too actually^^

  • Super :-)

  • "Whispering Winds..." dammit Flatley its he Coulin air followed by the Mason's Apron!

  • this makes me proud to be irish ,,

  • I love the expressions in his eyes!

    Beautiful flute playing...best there is!

    Eleanor

  • Anyone know what kind of flute that is, if it has a particular name, or just "advanced Irish Flute D " as it is called on EBay. Send a MSG or post here.

    Thank you

    The Classical Flutist

  • In 95 not sure what he is playing but it looks like a 8 key Rudall & Rose in cocus wood. English mid 1800's. Its similar to one I own. Certainly sounds similar.

  • Never even consider buying one of those "advanced Irish Flute D", it's absolute crap. No such thing as an "advanced instrument"

  • Thanks for the Warning. was a bit sceptical, did not look right. found a guy who showed me a site for finding a proper flute dealer, and a good "how to get started thing too!

Many thanks to all you have helped me out

  • sick yo

  • Two traditional tunes. First in an air called The Cooley. Second tune is a reel called Mason's Apron. He stole alot of this version from Matt Molloy of the Chieftains. Also, Flatley claims to have won the All Ireland Fleadh Cheoil Na hÉireann, but this has never been proven.

  • Excuse me, first tune is The Coolin.

  • hey there upkilt, im not tryna prove u wrong or watever... but is the first one not called whispering winds that he wrote himself for celtic tiger? and the masons apron is one that matt molloy plays, but i dont think his intensions where to steal.... maybe just his own rendition (i.e changing rythm) in this video? and if someone stole something from me i wouldent play along with them in a duet... as matt does in a video here on youtube.... sorry, just a thought though

  • Flatley really is given too much credit sometimes. Whispering Winds is the name that was made up for this segment of the show. The air Flatley plays is actually called The Coolin and is a very common tune. You'll see that this was cut from the original Riverdance in 1995 and Celtic Tiger did not come out until 2005. Also, he played this same air in Lord of the Dance. As you may know, Flatley was a nobody b4 he started touring with The Chieftains...cont

  • It was at this time Molloy was doing his famous solo rendition of Mason's Apron. That is the connection. Some of the turns in this video are identical to Molloy's. Flatley was a student of the eccentric, but well-known Seamus Tansey and this show's in his pulsy type of playing. Matt is a true gentleman and is possibly one of the nicest people you could ever play with or meet. I hope you get that opportunity. I know Matt, and let's just say you don't have to like someone to put on a good show.

  • no problem mate.. thanks.. id love to meet him

  • Well said upkilt...i saw this and thought the same thing.

  • don't be so negative, let the genius be!

  • Read somewhere that Michael won a major flute competition. Anyone know where it was held? The FOF flute was pretty 'high tech' if I recall. No vid of it on YT, I take it?

  • i really love this this song its so haunting

  • @gerarddaniel

lolz, wait until you hear lothlorien or listen to the rain by evanesence. It'll give you shivers.

  • Really Original... me also i have waiting for years just to see this big performance... Incredible

  • I don't understand why you were spammed on Michael Flatley's award.

  • For all you Flatheads out there (you know who you are), this part of the performance was cut out of the original Riverdance video when it was released in the USA on VHS. I have been waiting over ten years to see this. Thank you BettiBakos and You Tube.

  • @skiploading REALLY cause it's on my VHS copy and I watch it ALL the time that's weird...

  • it sounds so peaceful...i could listen to it everyday

  • sucha lovley piece...i would love to see him play it live

  • Very poor performance indeed. MUCH better in FOF.

  • absolutely wonderful

  • Same Flute music as in Feet of Flames

  • Just the first part is the same. He plays it better in Feet of Flames. More emotion.

  • a must see for all flatley fans

most of us just see flatley dancing and this is really extraordinary

it shows another side of him

  • beautiful. it moved me:)

  • so sensitive and exciting
