  • i dont agree, you cant call every indian/pakki whatever.. because some of them make a decent living and the good old "born in england" slob is fucking lazy and doing exactly what the pakkis are doing, bleeding our goverment dry by staying on the dole, its the same thing.

  • I hate the way this world works, pulled hard working men out of a job and brought cheap imports. I hate to say it, but if we sold our expensive exports, then maybe the cheap exporters such as china would never have grown at such speed.

English mines/steelworks/ship yards will never be the same again, and I fear that the economy will actually suffer in the long term because of it. For example, the north east, south Yorkshire, they have still not recovered!

  • Couldnt agree more Njugglesvain, now what do we make anymore, once the envy of the world. Reliant on every corner of the earth one day we will regret the loss of so many brilliant tradespeople..Look back and see what advances we made and now as you say its all just fecked up ..So sad

  • @BARDONICHI Now instead of making anything we just design it and then its build by cheaper labour. Its a sad way to end the industry of the country that led the world from the industrial revolution till the late 20th century.

  • This song is so evocotive, filled with the sense of loss so many working class communities have for lost industry and sense of community - generations abandoned by sucessive governments who believe this great country is reliant London alone. I come from a ship building town (not Newcastle) and this song resonates with me. Can we get the old sense of community back? Probably not. Is it worth trying for? Without a doubt.

  • i think we need to rebuild i think as a 17 year old we need to lower our 8/10 young lads and lasses joining the mod ands its pointless fights over oil and we need to be the way we where when me dar wasw a bhen and be connected to our roots

  • i think this song touches all geordies, always brought a tear to my grandma's eye..

  • @ZiyosOfficial god bless ya gran

  • Jimmy says we will rebuild.Sorry mate it'll never happen ever since the rich southerners came up here and bought all the cheap housing and are now selling them at ridiculous prices tat no hard working geordie can afford. So many of us have had to move away from our town to get a home ripping the heart out of the north east and filling it with students and foreigners. So good luck rebuilding it cause you done a good job pulling it down.

  • i love this song a proud man - i work in the shipyards in wallsend and he was there tuesday i felt very humbled. my wife loves this song it reminds her of her granda who also worked on the tyne. lets hope the tyne rises again and brings back sum dignity to good men

  • 6 people are from the south...

  • Two of the best lads I ever met were from Newcastle. I served with them in the 45th in Paderborn 1975 onwards. God they could scrap. Percy and John Little still think of you both with great fondness. Make mine a pills!!! Another great from Newcastle is the legend Jimmy Nail. I have all his recordings and I also listen to him on the Internet. Newcastle should be the capital of England. Geordies for ever...

  • bless yi mate and a happy-new-year kind regards billy from geordie-land

  • Good working class song. One day when we united we gone to chrash this community, be for sure...

  • Ouseburn Infants School, playing football in adjoining 'Grannies Park' (now rebranded as Ballast Hills), Raby Street Junior School, Saturday morning matinees at the Apollo on Shields Road, the end of the trolley bus, Frank Kelsey's corner shop (Byker), banana sandwiches, ham shank soup, school semolina pudding, Maynards sweet shop, Mark Toneys, peanut seller on cylinder track at St James Park....and then a young man kamikaze tapping on the dance floors of Dolce Vita, Madisons etc! Canny Days!

  • My family moved from Tyneside to New Zealand in 1974 when I was 4 years old. This song always brings tears to my eyes!

  • Great record.

  • its a good song , mark noflyer fae dire straits worte it me thinks

  • He gets a lot of stick but this is a great song.

  • Went back to the North east for the first time in five years yesterday. There's no place like it...never will be.

  • He may not be the best looking man in the world but he has a great voice

  • @debsco1978 A bit like yer Fatha down the back lane, eh?

  • @debsco1978( BOLLOCKS) where you from nugget heed theres always ONE ?

  • forever sunderland

  • I think we need more immigration.

  • whats happened to this country???????? its falling to pieces its about time every english man and son stood up and started fighting to get jobs for english people

  • @calvbowler1 the plan is to move all industry and manufacturing to asian, where the labour is cheaper. we'll be a nation of consumers. its the fault of the fuckers who own multi-national companies, not the common man. tis a shame alright though, the geordies are hard workers, just like the yorkshiremen and the irish. its disgusting whats happening on this side of the world. but the common man cant fight the elitists who run and control this world.

  • I think this song touches the heart with every manual worker. It seems to sum up the struggles of the manual worker and the fact that we've been sold down the river(no pun intended).

And now everything is dead and gone and has been replaced with pen-pushers, foreign labour, layabouts and people who wouldn't know a hard day's graft if it jumped up and bit them.

  • this song is not just for the northeast but for the whole of britain who depends on shipbuilding to sustain it....the neptune yard in wallsend was one of the best shipbuilders in the world....please nobody forget that because if we are not safe nobody is...

  • listening here from Ireland, love this song, its classic stuff, full of images and melody

  • I like this song but really you're not the "salt of the earth" just because you come from the north east.

  • Havent heard this song since 1995, gave me goosebumps then and still does now!

  • skin and bones, he most mean the bone yard at Walker it used to stink. used to collect maggots there for float fishing when I was a young boy

  • I always think of Bobby Robson when i listen, a true geordie gent, RIP.

  • What a brilliant song from a salt of the earth singer really brings a tear to the eye.Im a southerner but makes me wish i was a geordie.

  • This song represents what it was like 40 years ago less the ship yards. That this and other governments will regret, being a Falklands vertran I can honestly say that I have totaly given up on this country we are just the pupets of the yanks, Where was there help when we were at war with the argies ?

  • @Geordie1 Didn't they give us some help with satellite intelligence? As for what happened to the ports and shipyards - in a word, containerisation.

  • fuck thatcher an all tory posh cunts!!! working class an proud.

  • This song is brilliant.

  • How can someone so ugly make a nice noise like that?

  • @Samalamalamdam Autotune ;)

  • How can someone who looks like he does have such a fantastic voice.

    Brilliant song

    Way Ayh Bonnie Lad

  • Thumbs Up If You Surport North East Of England!

  • "Was" a great city Newcastle but ruined by the Governments of the last 30 years taking away our yards and saturating it with immigrants.

  • @mallafets That’s what happened all over England, what about us in the Black Country, the worlds greatest empire was built in our towns, its dead now. Full of pakis and every other immigrant who hates us drawing dole money and bleeding the NHS dry, and not paid a fucking penny into the system.

  • Always loved this song thanks for sharing X

  • @lilcrazyfrog I used to listen to it to when I was growing up, my dad always played him.

  • i like listening to jimmy nail reminds me of when i was a kid, by dad used to always play his songs.

  • Want to hear a funny story, after ther closed all the pits and we then inported coal from south america,,,,,,,,,,,,,,it all had to be washed in tilbury because it was to dirty to put directly into the power stations. Now thats real progress !!!!!!!!!

please can we have a vote to bring in leaders of industry to govern us instead of university bookworms, We have ditched our manufacturing & now have only the financial & service industry to fall back on, heaven help the next generation.

  • US NORTH EAST LADS ARE THE SALT OF THE EARTH

  • I'm a geordie, my dad's a geordie, and his dad was a geordie (though the man came from Ireland)

The men that proceeded me both worked on the Neptune, as did their brothers, my uncles.

In Perth, WA my girls barely know Tyneside, but when the beer flows (quietly) so do the tears. I know, and i remember where i'm from. And my kids will always be proud of their roots. God bless you all, you built an empire. Toon Toon, Black & white army!

  • Great song, Jimmy, lad!

  • superb voice singing the truth this country was once great and look at it now full of foreigners, foreign companies and products and always second up against america

  • They're busy burning Korans now.

  • .. Whereas in capitalism, you run out of everyone else's resources... mmm ~ I thought capitalism these days could create money out of thin air ~ oh wait a minute.... Seriously, I think it was Fred Dibnah who said in one of his programmes that the Tyne used to be jammed packed full of ships and anyone with mechanical skills, like himself, would never be out of work.

  • I was born in London but my Granda' worked at Swan Hunters and Redheads. I'm proud of that

  • @jb050774

shame the old swan hunters went down

they are building fancy new apartments for the wealthy over it now

  • This has to be one of the most emotional and heartfelt songs ever written and sang.

    it just oozes feeling

    Nice one Jimmy

  • this song is so great, and it touches the hearts of many, i love it it , because of Jimmys real belief that his home town will get better, and remembers the old days, when he was young bloooming great, love it, and i am a million miles away, well 100 maybe,x

  • Jimmy Nail never was and never will be a great singer (in my opinion I hasten to add) but this is an absolutely brilliant song which is sung with rugged honesty.Backed by the guitar playing of Mark Knopfler, it tells a story which is true of many of the UK's great rivers.I bought this song when it came out originally and it still gives me a "feel good" sensation.

As I said not a great singer but I loved him and Sammy Johnson (the voice of Sid The Sexist) in "Spender".

  • @davedee31165 Not great in the purest sense, but more than good enough.

  • my dad martin dinning worked in the naval yard fought in world war two for his country he had to finish work through ill health due to breathing compressed air in the tank he was in for years while fighting in the eighth army god bless you dad you fought for everyone and im so proud of you and what you did for everybody this song reminds me of the short times i had with you love god bless xx

  • @liamtia nice 1 what a song this is all the words are just superb well done jimmy mate not bad for an ex football hooligan that every1 said was a fk up!!

  • this song also speaks for where i live in east anglia. places like great yarmouth and lowestoft were busy fishing docks and ports at one point and then it all stopped. great yarmouth used to be the biggest herring fishery in the world. this song is beautiful and it speaks of how this bastard government has ruined our country. i cry sometimes when i listen to it but i cant stop listening to it cos it is such a emotional song. god bless all geordies

  • Neptune was the last to go,yes our very own neptune works in Ayr in Scotland closed this year after 100 years of production,......Great song very true to life in not so great Britain.

  • This is a shining example of why socialism always ends in sorrow, you run out of everyone else's money. Capitalism is the answer to producing long term prosperity. The individual must take responsibility and learn a trade or profession to support the family instead of relying upon the government or unions to take care of you and your family.

  • @blindonion Whereas in capitalism, you run out of everyone else's resources, and then shit on them and move somewhere else and repeat...

  • @twangbarfly I would like to ask you what resource we have run out of???? Please enlighten me! I respect your opinion but would ask for a dialogue on this subject.

  • @blindonion Come and live in Newcastle then !

  • @blindonion Whereas in capitalism, you run out of everyone else's resources, and then shit on them and move somewhere else and repeat... You're clearly quids under the status quo, but you don't need to step into the pulpit....

  • @blindonion Does everybody have the ability to become a professional footballer? No, of course not. It is not realistic to expect EVERYONE to be able learn a trade or profession because we are all given different gifts in different measure. I agree that people should try to make the best of themselves according to the cards they have been dealt. However, inevitably some people will be at the 'top' and others at the 'bottom'. The relatively poor must be protected somehow in a civilised society.

  • absolutely!!!. where has it all gone, and aint coming back.

  • we used this song in our lord armstrong project and sumthig dont no wot to say say lol! for this was a big river

  • great

  • It`s great to here his song once again!

  • God bless the Geordies ! From Manchester. Great song for great folk. Won't ever forget my weekend in Newcastle (many years ago)

  • Is that a certain Mr Knopfler I can hear in the background?

  • @gizatoob Yes it is, well spotted. He gets a credit and I think on the original video he sits down and plucks away, awesome song...and I am not even a Geordie

  • @escortRS1600i Scary thing is....I'm from Northumverland lol, so I should probably be punished somehow for not knowing about this. By the way, I think Jimmy is underrated, fair enough he hasn't done much ( or has he lol) but that's a cracking voice he has and Mark....well, Mark's just completely awsome...oh and thank's for clearing that up bud. I actually saw a live version of this and it was some other guy playing "like" mark and I was afraid I'd been had but no..I was right all along lol

  • there is more feeling in the way jimmy sings this song ,,than any politician will ever show ...this song has a heart and makes me realise what the twats have done to our country ..i,m not from the north..you guys have so much to hate our governments for ..you had the most skilled work force any where on this planet .....respect to you geordies

  • This song makes me soooo proud to be a Geordie and our fighting spirit, we will build ourselves back up again no matter what the government say!

  • Love this song - Newcastle born and bred. Hey, I was looking for Blue Roses by Jimmy - if anyone has it can they put it up....pretty please! The prefab sprout version is shite compared to Jimmy; he might not have the classic pop-star looks but he has a beautiful voice - far better than half the tripe out there at the minute X

This song is about the death of old industries and the death of fathers, and it is brilliant.

It gets the tears streaming down my face when I hear it.

Thank you Jimmy Nail for using your gift to put into words and music how so many people feel.

You have done it superbly and it's a fantastic tribute to the memory of all those dads.

  • @LegendofJune1980 My grandad a true Geordie has always lived in Newcastle, he remembers back in the 1950s, he worked at some collier next to Ashington at the time.

You got this view of all the men going to work, clean and everything, when they'd come back completely black, from working in the mines, now I think there's only Ellington still a colliery in Newcastle.

  • @LegendofJune1980

My Uncle Reg, was good friends with the newcastle utd great Jackie Milburn, worked with him when he worked at Ashington now a museum
