  • Well, I seem to be the lone person here because of Antichrist...Don't go into that film unprepared :/

  • As someone else has said, it's Handel not Puccini.

Check out Marilyn Horne's version if you want to hear it done well.

  • Divina

  • Marveilleuse: deixe que eu lamente minha sorte cruel...

    Gilberto

  • I LOVE YOU, Angela!

  • I enjoy her singing a lot. Now I would like her dancing at American show 'Dancing with the stars", hear me?

  • the vid is way out of sinc . but a good version either way

  • It's too tight. Too tense. It needs more sweetness. More lucidity.

  • @insanecaine :Let me weep over my cruel fate,is what this is about my friend. It is tragic,Angela does a good job here. Also onYT are Pat Petibon,Suzie Le Blanc(coloratura sopranos) and the mezzo Cristina Lordachescu. These are renditions which capture the emotion. The sweet and light renditions..Becky Jane,Hayley are just hard to take!! Spend a bit of time onYT listening to the various..and of course decide for yourself.

  • What happens with this video?

  • Boah, was für eine Stimme.

  • this video and sound sux...

  • @magghot: I find it disrespectful to Gheorghiu to even post a video out of sync with the tune. You should withdraw it and re-post the corrected version. She deserves better treatment than this, given that this rendition is by a wide margin the best available on youtube: seamless musicality, exquisite technique, evocative power...

  • @SavHub: Yes, I agree, She has one of the best interpretation of this beautiful aria. Too bad the video and the audio is not in sync. There was another posting of this video by someone else but I think that person's YT account was cancelled and the video is no longer available. There is another different posting of Gheorghiu with this aria. I also like Eva Mallas-Godlewska with this aria. She sung this aria in the movie Farinelli.

  • way to long before she even begins....

  • Video and sound are out of sync--and the sound level is too low. As far as I can tell, this is a nice enough rendition, well-connected.

  • 40 dislikes? gosh...

  • According to me it is a bit too slow! Nothing else.

  • Girls That Love Handbags, confirm here. * GirlieRewards. Info *

  • @Bryn3644 SPAM SPAM SPAM Get out of here!

  • This is somewhat of a mess.... and I'm surprised.

  • Me gusta mas con contratenor...:S

  • @GOOFY1327 ¿Por qué comparar? Me gusta más con barítono... ¿So what?

  • she wasn't her best but lovely ...

  • She is actually quite flat here, bizarrely missed her cue several times. Looked like she was struggling. Not her usual self

  • @kamikazekate she isn't flat at all. Where do you hear this so called "flatness"?

  • @kamikazekate @kamikazekate she isn't flat at all. Where do you hear this so called "flatness"? Because, as a trained vocal performer, I just don't hear it.

  • Don't like this version.

  • bartoli...mezzosopran MEGA MEGA MIRIFIC.....

    angela soprano MIRIFIC

  • @bigandrei BARTOLI RULES!

  • stupendaaa *-*

  • Bizarrely I first heard this piece whilst watching a very disturbing film called " Anti-Christ". I was transfixed and haven't stopped listening to it since.

  • No, I'm sorry. Bartoli not a patch on this. I admit I have a thing about Ange, but honestly, for control, range and purity, there really isn't anyone else. She is simply wonderful.

  • Cecilia Bartoli is not comparable because he shares word for word the Italian text and its transport is extraordinary and uneven

  • Cecilia Bartoli is not comparable because he shares word for word the Italian text and its transport is extraordinary and uneven

  • People are so use to listening to recordings these days that make less great singers sound great by using amplifications and other devices. One can never fully appreciate the true great singers without hearing them live - once you hear that balanced operatic resonance (chiaroscuro) pierce through the orchestra, then you're hooked. Mediocre singers under those conditions just fade out.

  • Bartoli, BETTER????? Does nobody listen to good operatic sopranos anymore? I swear...

  • @emmierocket205 and for good sopranos you want to name Gheorghiu? LOL

Gheorghiu and Bartoli are really on the same boat (as Netrebko and Bocelli), nothing but average people hyped up by marketing. And many people fall for it.

  • cecilia bartoli and karina gauvin are worlds better, no doubt. they make you feel the words "leave me weeping over my cruel fate, and let me sigh for freedom. may sorrow dissolve the bonds of my anguish, if only for mercy's sake." and it flows so effortlessly as if its the pure music and meaning flowing through them.

  • Jaroussky rocks!!

  • bartoli is not better, she is different. both are as great, their own sound.

  • To me she sounds as singing out of tune and having a hard job ...she should sing something else. I love la Bartoli much better !

  • She is very good. I bet she farts in a melody.

  • one of many beautiful interpretations!

  • Maybe I can provide you with another star to hail: watch?v=V6xikntZL8I

  • To each his own - to me this is close to perfection, as well as an example of wonderful technique and control.

  • Quite nice performance.I hope she wasn't cold:))

  • maravilloso.

  • Haendel just shot himself, and Paul Klemperer, in his grave, experienced an unexpected erection.

  • It starts with to much vibrato, and it keeps on going all the way. Her forte's begins to early, so I do not hear where she is going to. The sound is warm though, but I do not like the 'opera-style' of her interpretation. It's is simply to much

  • Handel WAS opera. It's a traditional take. She's not going against the intentions of the composer. If you don't like opera, then don't listen to Handel.

  • Bad lip sync is not an Internet problem, it's caused by idiots who can't encode video files properly. Don't forget that with digital there's an audio file and a video file that have to play back together in perfect sync. This was never a problem with VHS of course and now inflicts our lives with dodgy encodes. Incorrect aspect ratios are also a pet hate of mine; can't they see it's wrong!

  • well said.

  • Wonderful!! Angela is an angel, there is nothing that her lovelyy voice cannot do

  • chewing something? playback? poor rendition?

  • Absolutely beautiful !!!!! a very rich, powerful, wide voice. : ))))

(just a problem voice and lips , internet problem of course)

  • I think this is one of the best renditions. You are just mean :P

  • I don't what has happened to Youtube or to my PC, every video I see tonight are the sound and the video not sent in the same time, like 1-2 seconds later....

So, for this reason I thought before it was playback....

sorry for Angela, I didn't mean she was cheating, but i looked strange, I couldn' t believe my eyes or ears....

  • I don't know why, but it looks like playback....

I'm neither an expert nor a singer, but the movement of her lips doesn't always match with what I hear. Can please anybody here tell me his point of view?

    thanks MaggHot for posting !

  • The audio fell out of sync with the video when it was uploaded to YouTube and processed.

  • Thanks a lot DrunkyMcLushLives for explaining the reason of my misunderstanding!

  • No problem :)

  • Why does it always look as if Gheorghiu is chewing something when singing?

  • ...she is getting her money elswhere! Poor rendition, by a " prized " singer,...no need for that!

...and there should be no discussion,...nobody denies that she is able to sing, but that is not all.

...you do not breathe in between a word, if you´re singer. You DO breathe in between a word, if you are a bad singer!... a big laugh at "it is supposed to be like that, because it is a sob! " /rofl

  • Apart from being full of pathos this was quite a boring rendition. And her having to place her voice on almost every note becomes really annoying quite quickly.

  • someone must teach her not to take breath in the middle of a word

    for god's sake cru---da sorte

  • It's written that way, like a sob.

  • no! he's right. never you'll see taking breath in the middle of a word in opera by someone, except if he's a bad singer.

  • I've sung it in masterclasses, breathing there to make it seem like a sob is appropriate, and it is written into the music with the rests, any GOOD singer could tell you that, it's called doing what is written in the music

  • absolutely spot on!

  • my dear i actually sing that song and i not seen yet a sheet of "lascia ch'io pianga" righting this way. in baroque music you don't have a lot of informations and not indications of breathing, the composers were not so precise in this epoch, so just because of this you're a liar. my teacher doesn't like when i just breathing in the middle of some phrases, for exemple : "say me (breath) I love you." and if i unfortunately breath in the middle of a word she look at me like she'll killing me.

  • @bescheideneliebe

So it's like falling off a gabage truck. Where can we find your version?

  • though i also hate her interpretation, i have to defend her atthis point. there's a quarter-break between "cru" and "da"... i have the sheets here ;)

  • Really nothing special

  • after that performance they disrtibuted to people in Covent Gerden some pills to wake up.

  • diction is poor

and also pitch is very terrible !!!!!!!!!!

  • agreed. poor diction.

  • she has no baroque spirit, no baroque voice, she is an opera singer. She is not a baroque singer

  • what's wrong with you lot? Angela is the best deva EVER.

  • bad bad bad....loscio chio piongo....her italia,n is bad....and bad interpretation, boring and too dark, and romantc,....that is a BAROCK opera

  • Comment removed

  • swedenkiller: WTF, are you real? She lives in Italy and speaks Italian fluently. The Romanian language is a Romance language just like French, Italian and Spanish, all descendant of Latin. They have many things in common. She also speaks French, Spanish, and English (with an accent, like many in the USA). If you are an opera critic and language expert, then spell Baroque correctly.

  • oh sorry i told barock and not Baroque....i am like her....she says LOscio intead of Lascia....so why don`t you like me?

  • in italian: ma va a dar via l cu`

    in french : degage connard

in english : ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh my Gooood

in czech : jes do prdel

  • What's wrong with her? Even the pitch is terrible, not to mention the expression.

  • ah!!

  • Lei parla italiano stronzo rana?

  • Lei parla italiano stronzo rana?

  • I actually hate everthing about this performance the prenunciation, the way she glides, her interpretation . . . . yuck

  • hate to say it but this performance sucks

  • Not as pretty as Sumi Jo's version!

  • Sorry to say, I don't like her performance.

  • Heavy vibrato, huge volume at times, shame!! Spoils the melody, also shame she can't hit notes directly with gliding up to them. I suppose I just love the melody, but hate trained voices. This is such a pretty melody. But this is the way our singers are trained - doesn't cut it for me

  • Huge volume?? Heavy vibrato? And I can guarantee you she can hit every note there without gliding... I truly cannot understand you "shame"ing someone whose art you do not understand.

  • Of course she could hit the notes first time, shame she doesn't, why, because she has been trained that way. By the way, I have a Bmus, and I sure do understand the art, I just want singers to "think again" before committing to the same old same old. I personally would prefer to hear such a piece sung unaffected by "Opera style" training, which relies a huge amount on volume....vibrato, and gliding up to notes rather than hitting them first time.

  • amen hootersnooter.

  • And one more thing. Anyone remotely impressed with this rendition should seek the one with Inessa Galante on youtube. After hearing Inessa singing it, this one feels undernourished.

  • Puccini might as well have written this. Melodramatic, not one morsel of ornamentation. Does she think that you can get away with this poor style these days? In the house that Handel built? Bad girl....

  • Gorgeous dramatic soprano....... a bit slow for my taste, but nevertheless a great aria.

  • Beautiful. The very essence of Handel's Almirena.

  • Naše je lepší..:D

  • Come on.... It's Haendel not Puccini madame.

  • and so?

  • please please please does anyone have the version she sang and was posted here before... I think it was for French tv I swear the combination of her voice Handel and her looks would take anyone to heaven please where can I get another copy

  • Beautiful rendition!

  • Try this:

Sumi Jo gala concert 2006 - on youtube

second part, you will love it

  • A beautiful song !!!

I love the cover by Isobel Cooper

  • Sarah Brightman doesn't compare to this rendition.

  • At least Sara Brightman sang it in the proper style. She may be the many things she is said to be, but when it came to this piece she sang a lot cleaner line and a more stylish performance.
